We may have a delayed start to the afternoon in Bristol where a sudden downpour has forced groundstaff to bring the covers out.

A solid session for Sussex, adding 74 for the loss of Steve Smith, who looked odds on to reach a hundred before being pinned lbw by James Harris

James Coles shared a partnership with Smith of 143 and is sitting at lunch just five short of what would be a maiden first-class century

Credit the Glamorgan bowlers, particularly Michael Neser, who have bowled a tidy line and length throughout the morning, but with the lead now 172 Sussex are very much in the driving seat.

The club, meanwhile, have allowed 1,000 local schoolchildren in for free today.

It's been quite a morning for Somerset and especially for Matt Henry.

The New Zealand test bowler smote an uncomplicated 40 from just 23 balls to help Lewis Gregory carry Somerset to a fourth batting point, and followed that by taking two wickets in successive balls - Mark Stoneman losing his off stump to one express delivery, Stevie Eskinazi being caught behind off the next.

What a difference genuine pace can make!

  7. Lunch at Bristolpublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Gloucestershire 66-1 v Durham 445

    Unlucky.

Ben Charlesworth adds a streaky four past second slip from the penultimate ball of the morning, bowled by Paul Coughlin, as Gloucestershire reach lunch with only one wicket down - Charlesworth's stand with Marcus Harris is worth 56.

Coughlin earlier made an unbeaten 59 off 52 balls, sharing a 10th-wicket stand of 71 with Ajaz Patel, as Durham came within five runs of maximum batting points.

    Worcs 83 v Leics 173 & 148-5

Lewis Hill and Peter HandscombImage source, Rex Features

Mature batting by Lewis Hill and Peter Handscomb has extended Leicestershire's lead to 238 following yesterday's frenetic action when 22 wickets fell.

Having resumed on 66-2, the visitors lost three wickets for the addition of only 23 runs.

But Hill (44 not out) and Handscomb (16) have been together for 17 and a half overs to add 59 and Worcestershire can expect to be facing a very tough target in the final innings.

  9. Lunch at Hovepublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Glamorgan 123 v Sussex 295-5

It'll be a nervous lunchtime for Sussex teenager James Coles, who is just five short of his maiden first-class hundred.

Coles has batted beautifully throughout the morning, sharing a fourth-wicket stand of 143 with Steve Smith - who fell for 89, leg before to James Harris.

Oli Carter is 4 not out, with Sussex's lead a healthy 172.

  10. Lunch at Southamptonpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Hampshire 367 v Northamptonshire 18-3

Northants will be only too aware that they were whipped out by Notts for 72 last weekend and were 62 all-out against this very Hampshire at Wantage Road last month.

If they are to avoid a similar innings walloping this time around they will need to dig very deep this afternoon.

Keith Barker has bowled six overs, taken one wicket and has conceded one scoring shot.

  11. Lunch at Trent Bridgepublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Notts 102-1 v Essex 298

Essex introduce Matt Critchley's leg-spin for the final over before lunch and the Notts total reaches three figures as they collect four singles from it.

A good morning for the home side, who have added 89 runs to their overnight 13-0 for the loss of Haseeb Hameed, while Essex will be rueing three dropped catches.

Ben Slater is 53 not out, having settled down after a racing start to his innings, and Matthew Montgomery has 35.

  12. Lunch at Lord'spublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Middlesex 23-2 v Somerset 404

Matt Henry goes to lunch with the chance of a hat-trick after taking two in two balls to cement Somerset's advantage at Lord's.

Henry, who hammered a quickfire 40 to help his side post 404 earlier in the morning, followed that up with the wickets of Mark Stoneman and Stephen Eskinazi to leave Middlesex with their backs to the wall.

Sam Robson is 11 not out, with Max Holden yet to score.

WICKET AND LUNCH Sibley c Leaning b Evison 60published at 13:01 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Surrey 152-4 v Kent 278

WHAT A CATCH. Jack Leaning with a ridiculous diving catch to his left at second slip.

Dom Sibley doesn't want to go, he thinks it's hit the deck. He stands stock still for a very long time. It looks right on the cusp. If that was a Test match we'd be watching zoomed-in replays for eight minutes.

Perhaps the best view of all belongs to Zak Crawley at silly mid-on, he looks surprised it was given. He doesn't celebrate for a good couple of seconds until after his teammates do.

What a way to end the session for Kent, though. Sibley trudges off, and the players follow. The deficit is still 126.

up for Surreypublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Surrey 152-3 v Kent 278

In addition to taking the two wickets, Kent have bowled very economically this morning, bar one over from Wes Agar which cost 10.

The Surrey run-rate has dropped from well over four to three but Dom Sibley edges Joey Evison fine for four to bring up the 150 and move to 60 from 169 balls..

WICKET Eskinazi c Davies b Henry 0published at 12:55 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Middlesex 20-2 v Somerset 404

Make that two in two for Matt Henry... his first delivery to Stephen Eskinazi takes the edge and Steve Davies does the rest behind the stumps.

It's the end of the over, so we might have to wait until after lunch for the hat-trick ball...

  16. wicket

WICKET Stoneman b Henry 7published at 12:52 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Middlesex 20-1 v Somerset 404

Just in case you thought Somerset had signed Matt Henry for his batting, a reminder that he's rather useful with the ball as well...

That's an absolute cracker from the New Zealand paceman, coming back a long way down the slope to take out Mark Stoneman's leg stump.

  17. Postpublished at 12:51 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

Here's a sight some England supporters will be hoping to see plenty of during this summer's Ashes series - Steve Smith returning to the dressing room after falling short of a hundred.

His 89, though, has helped put Sussex in a strong position against Glamorgan.

  19. Postpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

    Glamorgan 123 v Sussex 292-5

New ball is available for Glamorgan - and it'd be something of a surprise if they declined to use it.

So far, just the one success for the visitors this morning, although it was a big scalp - that of Steve Smith, leg before to James Harris for 89.

Teenager James Coles has progressed to 93 - within touching distance of a first Championship century.

Durham have turned to the left-arm spin of Ajaz Patel - but Ben Charlesworth is down the track and although he doesn't quite get to the pitch, he nevertheless manages to hoist it away over mid-wicket for six.
