  1. Eng 148-3published at 32 overs

Harry Brook is looking a little skittish his crease to Nathan Lyon, though one straight drive looked four all the way before being well stopped at cut off.

Joe Root brings out the reverse sweep again, but it is more effective than earlier and brings two more.

We all hoped Harry Brook would be a good watch and he has lived up to the billing so far.

He's a looking a bit anxious, Harry Brook. Look to get himself in a bit more. He's got Joe Root in with him to calm him down a bit. If they lose a couple of wickets, they could be in trouble.

  4. Eng 145-3published at 31 overs

Shot. You can't take your eyes off Harry Brook at the moment.

Brook is offered a bit of width from Scott Boland and he smashes it through the covers, where boundary rider Travis Head collects and restricts England to two.

It's a new field now in Test match cricket, the boys who reverse sweep are so good, you have to put a man out there.

People talking about and expecting an England collapse? Yes, it could happen, but why should it? We've batted well so far, Australia have been on the ropes, Pope got unlucky, Lyon bowled a good ball to get Crawley, there's more than hope yet with our batting line-up still to come

He's charging in and driving without any conviction. He's pre-meditating and that has a certain amount of risk to it. That's his game.

  8. Eng 138-3published at 30.1 overs

    Ha, talk about confidence.

Harry Brook looks to charge Scott Boland and smash him out of the ground.

He doesn't middle it though and the ball trundles to mid-off.

It's a streaky shot, I'm not sure it carried. It went wide. That would've been a ripper, but a false shot.

  10. Eng 135-3published at 29.3 overs

    Steady!

Good response from Nathan Lyon, who cramps Harry Brook and lures an edge that flashes just past the man diving at first slip.

    That was not far away.

He only just gets there. Nathan Lyon sees him coming and sticks out wide. He went leg side and a bit too leg side. Great intent, this is the way he plays. It's a good shot to his over extra cover.

  12. Eng 133-3published at 29.1 overs

Harry Brook gave himself a few sighters - and now he is off.

Brook steps down the track, Lyon reacts by sending it wide, but the England man clatters it through the off side for four.

It went through and beat him, kept a little bit low. Bounced a second time before it got to the keeper. Are we seeing a change in pitch behaviour?

  14. Eng 129-3published at 29 overs

Ohh, has that kept a little low?

Scott Boland, as accurate as ever, catches Joe Root by surprise and the ball flies past the outside edge.

    Encouragement for Australia.

We've had a record number of singles and still no maidens. If it's Labuschagne and Smith, we'll definitely have some maidens.

There's just been a couple that have straightened. Nathan Lyon is fantastic, almost 500 wickets. He's up there with the best spinners in the world.

Rob Towell: England 124-3 at lunch on the first day! Root is settled in and Harry Brook the 6 machine is next in for England. This next session after lunch could be fireworks!! Early start in Canada to watch but it’s going to be worth it!!

snookered: Oh dear. That Crawley wicket just before lunch could be very costly. Hmm I sniff another collapse

    Half-full or half-empty...?

  18. Eng 127-3published at 28 overs

Australia decline the review - and the replay shows that was the right decision.

There is a hum of expectation echoing around the Edgbaston crowd. The Hollies Stand looks to be finding its voice as well. This is when things start to get a bit lively in there.

Is this worth a review? There's a lack of confidence.
