    Edgbaston allotment

I've been told 16,200 cakes will be made at Edgbaston during this Test. They even bake their own bread here.

It's also the only professional ground in England with its own allotment and some of the produce will make it into supporters' food over the next five days.

Although England have played well, each time they look like they have got on top of Australia, they have managed to find a wicket.

A positive start and a good run rate however, 176-4 is still a very even looking score. A 4 off the first ball of the innings means little if England don’t make at least 400 on this pitch

How the turns have tabled, need some stability here!

The players are using that wicket to take a drink.

There is a hush in the crowd now. Things looked to be going so well for England at the start of the session, but those two wickets have dragged the game back into Australia's favour.

Jonny Bairstow is the new batter. England do bat deep.

He has. England are in a bit of bother now.

It was a pretty poor shot in fairness, wafting at the ball way outside off stump.

Connect though and it would have gone for four.

    You live by the sword...

I think he's nicked that looking at the replay.

Australia are certain Ben Stokes has feathered through to the keeper here.

The umpire gives it - but Stokes reviews.

    A big moment.

James Buxton: How jammy is that, unbelievable. So undeserved for Australia.

    Andrew: A bizarre dismissal.

Pudding-Head Wilson: Well that was unfortunate.

Theo: Well Brook will win the award for most unlucky way to get out… what are the chances?

That is worthy of a what happened next on A Question Of Sport. It really was freakish.

Still cannot believe that dismissal of Harry Brook. It has to be seen to be believed - and we will have the clip for you shortly.

    Not now, Ben.

Maybe Harry thought it went down the leg side. We've not seen a huge amount of spin, but we've seen the odd ball. Nathan Lyon is going to have a big, big say in this series.

I have to be honest, I've never seen anything quite like that. It's actually bounced off some part of Brook as it's came off his back. It's a freakish dismissal. If he tried to do that 1,000 times, he wouldn't do it again.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 37.2 overs

    Brook b Lyon 32 (Eng 175-4)

That is one of the most extraordinary wickets I have ever seen!

Harry Brook has shouldered arms to a leg-side delivery, it clips his thigh pad, spins into the air and brushes his back before spinning back onto his stumps.

Talk about unlucky. A freakish dismissal if there ever was one.

Brook was looking in good touch as well. How big a moment could that be?

  17. Eng 174-3published at 37 overs

    Brook 32, Root 36

We have not seen much of David Warner so far but he does well to cut the ball off at mid-wicket and deny England a boundary.

There's a touch of swing from Josh Hazlewood too, who has probably been the most impressive of the Australia seamers so far.

And that, my friends, is the first maiden of the day - in the 37th over.

Come on England, pull your fingers out.
