This is a "rebuilding" partnership, but they are still going at nearly five an over! It's remarkable.
Joe Root has been reasonably quiet since reaching his half-century but he leaps onto a leg-side delivery from Scott Boland, clipping it around the corner for four.

Bairstow was sweating on it. He wanted that boundary!
I was just about to type how watchful Jonny Bairstow is being this close to tea. Then he takes a big step forward and launches Nathan Lyon over the top for four.
Shows how much I know.
Jonny Bairstow doing Jonny Bairstow things.
Nathan Lyon is back into the attack.
We have 20 minutes until tea.
Bairstow 19, Root 51
I know every time Travis Head is about to field because the Edgbaston crowd give him a bit of grief as he collects the ball and an ironic cheer as he hurls the ball back in.
That is likely to follow him round for the rest of this match at least.
I don't think you are the only one, Chris.
And here is why:

I know I don't say it enough and I should say it more, but always know that I love you, Joe Root.

Are we seeing the green shoots of an England recovery? Or have a just jinxed it?
Either way this is a very good shot from Joe Root.
Oof, Cameron Green gets one to keep low and fizz past Jonny Bairstow's edge and narrowly miss his off stump.
There is still something in this surface for the seamers.
Green offers some width next up though, allowing Bairstow to cut away for fine for a welcome boundary for England.

It is not a natural tactic for Australian teams. It is always hedging your bets, sweepers on both sides of the field. I don't mind a sweeper on the leg side. I think tactically, earlier in the innings, we were talking about a lack of short balls to Zak Crawley, who is such a good player of the short ball, so I can see they did that. Having a sweeper on the off side, you are hedging your bets.
Here is the dismissal of Ben Stokes that left England in a bit of a mess.
Huge appeal from Pat Cummins as he smacks into Joe Root's pads - nothing given though. And after a quick chat with wicketkeeper Alex Carey they decline the review.
Right decision too, the replay showed it was going over the stumps.

That cover drive off Cameron Green, jeez, that was a good shot. I thought the first shot of the day was a good shot, but that was equally as good.
If at first you don't succeed...
Jonny Bairstow gets away with a wild drive outside the off stump, but the next delivery is clattered through the covers for four.
That is a fantastic shot. And that's the England 200 as well.

The England fans’ Joe Root chant there, to the tune of Hey Jude, is as probably the loudest of the day.

Against Australia, it's Joe Root's 20th score of 50 or more, including three 100s.
