To Adam Davies saying “we are either going to double our score or be all out at tea” at 1425. Can’t it be both?

Adam Davies (14:25) - or both??

This is breath-taking cricket, exciting if nothing else!

It's been fair to say Travis Head has been getting some consistent 'feedback' from the crowd at Edgbaston throughout this Test.

Poor old Travis Head. He dropped a catch on day one and he has been given grief from the Edgbaston crowd ever since.

Meanwhile, Australia have successfully managed to get the ball changed. That's happened a few times this Test - from both sides.

At some point later today, England will be bowling. If and when they get a wicket, the Hollies Stand will launch into orbit.

That was probably a little closer to Steve Smith at first slip than Jonny Bairstow would have liked. England look like they are ready to starting to go up through the gears again.

  6. Eng 195-5published at 44.3 overs

    Edged but safe!

Just the one slip in for Australia and it costs them, as Jonny Bairstow edges through where second slip would be and the ball races away for four.

    England's lead passes 200.

  7. Eng 195-5published at 44.2 overs

Bang. You could hear that. Jonny Bairstow slaps it through the off side for four.

That raced away to the boundary.

  8. Not outpublished at 43.5 overs

    Not out! Bump ball!

Ben Stokes never looked concerned and that's why.

  9. Umpire reviewpublished at 43.5 overs

Have Australia snared Ben Stokes here? He reverse-sweeps Nathan Lyon straight to Scott Boland.

The umpires ask for a second look

Jez: For all this talk of Bazball etc, the one telling stat that could be the difference in this game is extras. In 1.5 innings Australia have given away 18 runs against England's 26 in one innings. Such small margins can make a huge difference.

Kizza from Alcester: If England win this Test, I will stop with my traditional values of Test cricket and fully embrace Bazball.

Adam Davies: We are either going to double our score or be all out at tea. It's a clearance sale.

It was a bit of hoick from Ben Stokes. He dragged it with plenty of bottom hand. Not particularly elegant, but it went to the boundary. Next ball Patrick Cummins gives Stokes some room and he wand like lifts it over.

  12. Eng 182-5published at 43 overs

    Lead by 191

Ugly but effective from Ben Stokes as a rather ungainly hoick across the line brings four.

The next delivery is much more graceful as Stokes cuts through a gap in the off side for another boundary.

The lead is now 191. Will they get past 200 and then put the foot down? Who knows with this team.

  13. Eng 174-5published at 42 overs

    Lead by 181

Just the single from Nathan Lyon's latest over as England pick and choose when to attack.

Pat Cummins had decided to bring himself on to try and make the breakthrough.

Ben Stokes was rather circumspect before lunch but he has stepped things up since the resumption.

Douglas Elder: Is this the first Test match ever where you can say ‘the next 15 minutes will be crucial’ at literally any time?

  17. Eng 173-5published at 41 overs

    Stokes 23, Bairstow 9

That's lovely from Jonny Bairstow. He opens the face, plays it late and calmly guides the ball down to third man for four.

The sun has broken through the clouds at Edgbaston now, making it ideal conditions for batting.

You wouldn't want to be in Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey's position, stood up behind the stumps to Scott Boland, if these two start reverse-ramping like Joe Root did this morning.

There is a murmur of expectation around Edgbaston. They are sensing some more fireworks.

Australia again look to check any attacking momentum by deploying a defensive field. But that just makes it easy for England to knock the singles.
