  1. 'Ugly and unnecessary'published at 08:37 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

Peter Lalor in the Australian, external did not like Ollie Robinson's celebration towards Usman Khawaja, calling it "ugly and unnecessary".

Lalor added that Stokes' first innings declaration "is starting to smell of hubris" and questions whether the England skipper has "pushed his luck too far".

"Recent history and statements suggest he will continue to push his luck. Stokes doesn’t believe in draws so his team must make runs at a fast pace or call another sporting declaration if they are to push for a result in this game."

We will move away from the Ollie Robinson celebration row momentarily (some of the Aussie media reaction is coming right up). It is time for today's ZaltzQuiz.

Every day during these Ashes series, men's and women's, TMS stats man Andy Zaltzman will be posing a question for you all to answer.

    And here is today's offering:

Australia's tail looked fragile on paper before yesterday, and looked even more fragile on grass as England's bouncer barrage added another team to its list of victims from the past year, with the last three wickets adding just 14 runs.

However, over recent Ashes decades, Australia's eighth, ninth and tenth wicket partnerships have been far more productive than England's.

A two-part question for today's Ashes Guesswork Special.

    1. In 19 Ashes rubbers from 1986-87 to 2021-22, how many times did England's last three wickets – worked out by adding the average 8th, 9th and 10th stands together – do better than Australia's over the course of a series?

    2. To the nearest whole number, how many runs did (a) England, and (b) Australia, average after the fall of the 7th wicket in those series combined?

  9. Carey plays down Robinson celebrationpublished at 08:21 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey said he did not see the incident with Robinson and opener Khawaja had not spoken about it.

"It is an Ashes and at times it is going to be pretty exciting and hostile cricket," said Carey. "From our dressing room, there was no comment."

  10. Robinson 'does not care' about Khawaja celebrationpublished at 08:17 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

Robinson said he does not care how his celebration for the wicket of Usman Khawaja was perceived in the Australia dressing room.

"We've all seen Ricky Ponting and other Aussies do the same to us," Robinson said. "Just because the shoe is on the other foot, it's not received well."

Robinson, 29, is yet to be contacted by the match referee and would not comment when asked if he expected to be.

"It's my first home Ashes Test and to get the big wicket was special," said the Sussex man.

"Uzzie played unbelievably well and to get that wicket was massive. We want that theatre of the game, so I'm here to provide it."

When asked if the outburst towards Khawaja might make him a target for the Australians, Robinson said: "I don't really care how it's perceived. It's the Ashes, professional sport. If you can't handle that, what can you handle?"

  11. Robinson gives Khawaja an X-rated farewellpublished at 08:15 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

One flash point on Sunday occurred when Ollie Robinson bowled Usman Khawaja for 141.

The England pace bowler appeared to swear at Khawaja as he made his way back to the pavilion.

Part of the game or stepping over the line? Either way Robinson did not seem too fussed.

  12. Moeen charged for applying spray to bowling handpublished at 08:14 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

A potential problem for England could be the ability of Moeen Ali to bowl in the fourth innings.

Moeen is struggling with a blister on the index finger of his right hand, the finger used to spin the ball.

He has been fined for applying a spray to his bowling hand during the second day on Saturday.

Players use drying sprays to help reduce sweat but are not allowed to do so without approval from umpires.

The incident was seen on TV cameras and the International Cricket Council said it displayed conduct that is "contrary to the spirit of the game".

Moeen, 36, admitted the offence and has been fined 25% of his match fee.

He has also been given one demerit point.

It was deemed the spray was not used to change the condition of the ball, which would have been a more serious offence.

  13. 'The 20 minutes when the real Australia turned up'published at 08:10 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

    Matthew Henry
    BBC Sport at Edgbaston

Settle in, everyone - the real Australia have arrived.

In an electric 20-minute spell on Sunday afternoon, after previously opting to fight England's Bazball aggression with fluffy pillows, they were roused by the Edgbaston gloom which stirred all of their trademark hostility.

In just 22 balls, the rampant tourists took two wickets, conceded just one run off the bat and bellowed impassioned appeal after impassioned appeal.

"That is the Australian team I have known for all of the time I have been watching Test cricket," former England captain Michael Vaughan noted.

  14. Australia hit England between Edgbaston showerspublished at 08:09 British Summer Time 19 June 2023

    Stephan Shemilt
BBC Sport chief cricket writer at Edgbaston

Less than 33 overs of play were possible on a soggy Sunday in Birmingham, but there was still time for some engrossing and dramatic Test cricket.

England were superb in the morning session, taking advantage of Australia's lack of intent to perfectly execute some carefully laid plans and delight the riotous Hollies Stand.

But the Australian passiveness disappeared in the small window between the showers that arrived as forecast after lunch.

With the ball nibbling more than any time in the match, Australia made the benign surface look full of danger. England were lucky to get out only two down.

Monday is set to be dry, but the rain predicted for Tuesday will have an influence on any potential England declaration - if they bat long enough for that luxury.

After an 80-minute break for rain we had a thrilling spell of cricket among the gathering Edgbaston gloom, with Australia removing both England openers in quick succession.

Joe Root then survived a review as Australia looked to press home their advantage. But the rain returned to force an early close with England 28-2 - a lead of 35.

It was arguably the session of the match so far and the moment Australia, who up to that point had been rather timid in the field, really came to the Ashes party.

Australia still looked well set for a first innings lead but England hit back, taking their final four wickets for 14 runs in 21 balls to leave the tourists 386 all out - a deficit of seven.

It was not the best innings behind the stumps for Jonny Bairstow, who spilled an early chance to dismiss Alex Carey.

It did not prove too costly though as James Anderson produced a beauty a few minutes later.
