  1. 'Merv goes in to bat for Ollie'published at 08:53 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

Elsewhere, there is more Australian backing for England! Well, sort of...

The Australian goes with former Australia bowler Merv Hughes sticking up for England's Ollie Robinson in the row over his send-off of Usman Khawaja...

Daniel Cherny writes, "Hughes, not averse to a rowdy celebration in his day, said criticism of Robinson’s actions, which were condemned by some commentators, was nothing but a beat-up.

"'Is it really coming to a point where a bowler can’t celebrate a wicket?' Hughes told CODE Sports. “Must be a slow news day if you’re trying to make something out of that.'"

  2. 'Knights of bold put Aussies in the shade'published at 08:49 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

Time for a look at the Australian papers now. It's slim pickings this morning - I think because of time differences and an extended day four rather than another boycott of Stuart Broad...

Anyway, The Western Australian have actually been praising England's approach, comparing it to Australian teams of old...

"England are brash, bullish and taking the attack to the tourists like we’ve never seen it before," writes Jackson Barrett.

"Australia, once the bad boys of the sport.

"The tough, imposing and unrelenting noisy visitors that crashed many an England Ashes party are as deep in their defensive shells as we’ve ever seen them."

  3. A delayed start?published at 08:45 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

Sadly, the one thing that might get in the way of a dramatic conclusion to this brilliant match is the weather.

There is plenty of rain around at Edgbaston this morning. The hope is that the worst of it has passed through by midday and there will still be ample time to get a result.

From an England point of view, once the rain stops it looks like conditions might be quite handy for seam bowling...

What is it about this ground?

Headingley may have cornered the market on England all-rounders salvaging Ashes lost causes, but for the slow build of drama, an electrifying atmosphere and squeaky-bum finishes, Edgbaston is the place to be.

To Ian Botham in 1981 (he followed his masterpiece in Leeds with another showstopper here) and Steve Harmison in 2005, get ready to add 2023.

As Birmingham sleeps, England need seven more wickets, Australia another 174 runs to reach their target of 281 - barely a cigarette paper between them, day five full of promise for another classic.

Stuart Broad ended the day bent double in the middle of the Edgbaston field.

The Hollies Stand, Edgbaston's 6,000-strong stag do, rose because England's 'Mr Ashes' had done it again.

  6. How's stat?!published at 08:37 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

    • Australia are chasing 281 to win this match, eerily close to the 282 they fell short of chasing at the same venue in 2005
    • Between them, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne have scored 35 runs in this match, the third-lowest aggregate total the pair have put on in a match in which both have played
    • Usman Khawaja will be hoping to follow up his first-innings hundred with another ton. Should he reach three figures, it'll be the 10th time in an Ashes Test a batter has scored a century in both innings. Khawaja would be the first to achieve the feat twice, having scored twin tons in Sydney in January 2022
    • Stuart Broad needs two more wickets to reach 50 Test wickets at Edgbaston

    Daily Mirror

'Squeaky Brum time' - possibly my favourite headline of the morning comes from the Mirror as they go with Stuart Broad aiming to "summon the spirit of 2005" to take England to victory at Edgbaston.

Usman Khawaja and nightwatchman Scott Boland dug in to survive until the close, taking Australia to 107-3.

Then it was over to Stuart Broad.

So often the man for the big occasion, he did it again and he sent Edgbaston into delirium by dismissing Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith cheaply.

The breakthrough eventually came in the 18th over as David Warner feathered behind off Ollie Robinson to give England a lift.

Jimmy Anderson should have had a wicket early in the Australia second innings after finding Usman Khawaja's edge.

But Jonny Bairstow didn't move and the ball went between keeper and slip for four.

A blow for England and Australia added to their worries with a confident opening stand...

England got themselves into a spot of bother but some useful lower-order runs helped them set Australia 281 to win.

Joe Root went back to the reverse ramp soon after and smashed Scott Boland for six as he made a highly entertaining 46.

The same score as Harry Brook, who was as aggressive as ever. With those two going well, England looked to be taking control.

Before we go any further, let's remind ourselves how we got to this stage with a look back at the best of Monday's action...

From the very first ball it was clear it was going to be a remarkable day as Joe Root tried to reverse ramp Pat Cummins!
