An early strike for Warwickshire after lunch!

    Notts v Hants 16-2

James Vince has come out and done James Vince things, unperturbed by the disastrous start for his side.

A couple of trademark cover drives take him to 13.

  3. Postpublished at 13:42 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex v Kent 92-4

Jordan Cox joins Jack Leaning in the middle after lunch following Ben Compton's untimely dismissal, from a Kent perspective.

Cox was schooled at Felsted in Essex and always enjoys turning it on against Kent's neighbours to the north - how the visitors could do with a big contribution from him here!

Good news from Leeds - they're going to get started in about 35 minutes after a lengthy rain delay.

WICKET Middleton c James b Pettman 0published at 13:21 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Notts v Hants 0-2

    0-2!

Fletcha Middleton gets a clip off his legs all wrong and chips Toby Pettman straight to Lyndon James at mid-wicket.

    What a start for Notts.

  8. Harmer picks up key wicket before lunchpublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

Essex v Kent 92-4 - lunch, day one

    Paul Newton
    BBC Essex sport

Kent elected to bat on a greenish-looking used wicket.

The openers were each reprieved by dropped slip catches before the unlucky bowler, Sam Cook, in a magnificent opening spell from the Hayes Close End, removed Tawanda Muyeye, bowled, and Joe Denly, caught behind, in consecutive balls.

When Paul Walter ran out Harry Finch with a direct hit from point, three wickets had fallen for six runs, with Kent 34-3.

Ben Compton and Jack Leaning seemed to have steered Kent to calmer waters with a 50 partnership before Compton succumbed caught and bowled by Simon Harmer for 47 to the last ball before lunch.

  9. 'Solid platform for Somerset'published at 13:17 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

Northants v Somerset 107-1 - lunch, day one

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

Just about the perfect morning for Somerset, as Sean Dickson and Tom Abell added an unbroken century partnership after the early loss of Tom Lammonby, given out caught behind off Jack White, although replays suggest the ball flicked only his hip.

Batting hasn't been easy by any means on a greenish-looking pitch and there have been some close calls for lbw.

But with Dickson picking up where he left off on Finals' day and Abell at last finding some form, a solid platform has been built, especially with the sun now coming out.

  10. Even morning at Edgbastonpublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

Warwickshire v Lancashire 84-3 - lunch, day one

    Clive Eakin
    BBC CWR Sport

Having been put in, Lancashire were probably the happier of the two teams until Warwickshire struck twice in the last 10 overs before lunch.

Trying to accelerate on a slow pitch Josh Bohannon's attacking approach ended with him being caught behind off Ed Barnard for 33 and then Olly Hannon-Dalby's nagging accuracy was rewarded when Phil Salt's inside edge sent the ball crashing into his off stump.

The pitch being played on is the same one as used on Blast Finals Day and the recent damp conditions have left the outfield very slow so Lancashire may still feel their lunchtime position isn't a bad one.

It was helped when New Zealand international Daryl Mitchell hit the penultimate ball of the session for six off the spin of Danny Briggs.

  11. wicket

WICKET Holland c Harrison b Hutton 0published at 13:15 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Notts v Hants 0-1

Brett Hutton strikes after five balls for Notts!

Ian Holland pushes forward at a full one and the Hampshire opener nicks it to Calvin Harrison at second slip.

  12. Postpublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

After the morning session was wiped out, they're under way at Trent Bridge.

Ian Holland and Fletcha Middleton are opening for Hampshire.

    • Yorkshire v Sussex 24-3
  14. Lunch at Edgbastonpublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Warks v Lancs 84-3

Tick along quietly to lunch after the fall of a wicket?

That's not for Daryl Mitchell, who runs at Danny Briggs, and deposits the Warwickshire tweaker back over his head for a mighty six.

Two through the off-side finish the session, which has been fairly even.

Lancashire consolidated after the early loss of Luke Wells through Keaton Jennings and Josh Bohannon, but Bohannon was caught behind for a brisk 33, and Phil Salt was then comprehensively bowled by Oliver Hannon-Dalby on the brink of lunch.

A couple more wickets after the break and Lancashire will be up against it.

  15. Lunch at Lord'spublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Middlesex v Surrey 77-1

Rory Burns has hit eight boundaries in a pleasant 45 from 92 deliveries and staved off the threat of a suffocating start from the hosts.

Middlesex chose to bowl first and got plenty of movement in helpful conditions, however they missed a couple of chances to add to the tally after Ryan Higgins trapped Dom Sibley early on.

Tom Latham was dropped by Sam Robson and was a whisker away from chopping onto his own stumps but he's amassed 23 in a partnership of 65 with Burns who will surely be eyeing a big score on the opening afternoon.

  16. Lunch at Chelmsfordpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex v Kent 92-4

A lot of action packed into the opening 31 overs at Chelmsford.

Essex put down two early catches off Sam Cook who shrugged it off to get onto to nip back to bowl Tawanda Muyeye and then tempted Joe Denly to edge behind next ball.

Harry Finch averted the hat-trick but did depart for a duck soon after after another calamitous run-out soon after to leave the visitors on 34-3 after winning the toss.

Ben Compton and Jack Leaning steadied the ship but Compton departing on the stroke of lunch means it's been overwhelmingly Essex's session as they go in search of a fourth straight Championship win.

  17. Lunch at Northamptonpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Northants v Somerset 107-1

Somerset go to lunch by far the happier of the two sides.

Northants opted to bowl having won the toss, and removed Tom Lammonby early on, but from there, Sean Dickson and Tom Abell have batted very nicely indeed.

Dickson moved past 50 in the final over before lunch, while Abell has 34 at the other end.

  18. wicket

    WICKET Compton c & b Harmer 47published at 13:03 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex v Kent 92-4

Agony for Ben Compton who charges down the track only to chip Simon Harmer's delivery straight back into the bowler's bread basket.

    Compton looks devastated.

    That will be lunch.

  19. 50 runs

for Sean Dicksonpublished at 13:00 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Northants v Somerset 104-1

A delightful punch through midwicket brings Sean Dickson four, and also takes the Somerset opener past 50 from 81 balls.

Six fours and one six in his innings so far.

  20. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 12:57 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex v Kent 86-3

Ben Compton could have been caught by two fielders then, but as it is, he lives to fight another day... again!

Leg slip Nick Browne can only parry Compton's glance off Simon Harmer up into the air. To his credit regular slip Alastair Cook reacts like a much younger man and launches himself full stretch behind the timbers to try and claim the parry but the ball slips through his fingers on the way back to earth.

No wicket, no run, just a lot of drama crammed into 1.5 seconds of action.
