  1. Postpublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex 0-0 v Kent 207

Nick Browne and Alastair Cook head out to begin the Essex reply.

Matt Quinn takes the new ball as Kent seek to defend that below-par total.

Can the visitors make inroads in the 37 overs remaining in the day?

  2. Essex seamers shinepublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

Essex v Kent 207 all out - tea, day one

    Don Topley
    BBC Essex

Essex enjoyed their tea as Kent after winning the toss, were bowled out for 207.

On a used and dry wicket, Sam Cook was the chief destroyer in the morning with a fine 3-19, whilst Jamie Porter picked by the tail with 3-47. Simon Harmer claimed just the one wicket but will become more dangerous later on this surface.

Kent’s total of 207 does seem much under par as Essex, with title ambitions, will want a decent first-innings lead to tighten a stranglehold on lowly Kent.

Dan Lawrence returns tomorrow having left the England camp at Old Trafford and will replace Robin Das.

  3. 'Curious decision to bat'published at 15:56 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

Yorkshire v Sussex 61-5 - tea, day one

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

Another interruption this time for heavy rain in Leeds Leeds, where just 27.3 overs have been possible today.

Sussex may rue their decision to bat first, with skipper Tom Alsop holding the innings together.

Credit the Yorkshire bowlers who have bowled an excellent line and length, particularly Matthew Fisher who has bowled exceptionally well taking three of the wickets to fall.

However the Sussex decision to bat first does seem a curious one, given the overcast conditions and forecast of interruptions during the day.

  4. wicket

    WICKET Kohler-Cadmore c sub b Sanderson 43published at 15:43 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Northants v Somerset 215-4

Tom Kohler-Cadmore tries to swing Ben Sanderson away over the leg-side, but doesn't quite catch it, and is excellently caught by the sub fielder in the deep.

James Rew arrives in the middle with an excellent platform to build on.

  5. Tea at Trent Bridgepublished at 15:42 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Notts v Hants 84-6

That wicket does indeed signal the end of the session at Trent Bridge.

    Nottinghamshire are firmly in command.

  6. wicket

WICKET Gubbins b Paterson 49published at 15:41 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Notts v Hants 84-6

Hampshire's only form of resistance so far falls on the stroke of tea.

Nick Gubbins has fought hard as wickets fall all around him, but chops Dane Paterson on, and has to drag himself from the middle.

  7. wicket

WICKET Arshdeep st Rossington b Critchley 8published at 15:40 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex v Kent 207

The very next ball. A flatter and straighter one from Matt Critchley, Arshdeep with another premeditated stride, this time he doesn't connect and Adam Rossington whips off the bails.

Arshdeep didn't even look back. He just carried on towards the pavilion. He must have heard the bails on the floor.

End of innings and tea will be taken.

  8. 6 runs

for Arshdeep Singhpublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex v Kent 207-9

Remember the strike rate? Arsdheep takes a big stride outside off and gets down on one knee for a monster slog sweep over square leg for six off Matt Critchley.

  9. 200 runs

up for Kentpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex v Kent 201-9

Essex will be peeved Kent have reached this score. They have put four catches down today and might have been out there already, building a first-innings lead.

  10. wicket

WICKET Dawson c Moores b James 2published at 15:36 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Notts v Hants 82-5

Liam Dawson tries to work a full delivery from Lyndon James to leg, but only succeeds in nicking it through to Tom Moores behind the stumps.

James now has 3-12 from 5.1 overs.

  11. wicket

WICKET Burns c Holden b Higgins 79published at 15:34 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Middlesex v Surrey 163-3

Big wicket for Middlesex. Rory Burns charges down the track, tries to work into the leg side, plays across the line but can only edge it, offering a fine diving catch to Max Holden at gully.

Ben Foakes joins Jamie Smith in the middle. Two of the country's classiest batting keepers on show at the same time on the same track on the same day. What a treat for the County Championship.

  12. Division Two latestpublished at 15:32 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

Elsewhere in Division Two the rain has started falling again at Headingley and so they've taken an early tea.

Sussex are in trouble on 61-5 against Yorkshire.

Worcestershire have endured a miserable afternoon at Oakham School against Leicestershire. They're 147-9 having lost eight wickets in the session.

  13. 200 runs

up for Somersetpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Northants v Somerset 207-3

George Bartlett and Tom Kohler-Cadmore continue to dovetail nicely, and move Somerset past 200.

They've still got the in-form James Rew to come...

  14. Potts ends Derbyshire partnershippublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Derbyshire 180-3 v Durham

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

After enduring a torrid few minutes at the crease before lunch, Wayne Madsen has just left the field on the cusp of tea with 62 to his name. Crucially for Derbyshire he also added 118 for the third wicket with Brooke Guest, who has 80.

Madsen edged his first ball from Matthew Potts to first slip but it didn't quite carry to Michael Jones. In those first few overs Potts found the edge twice more, while Madsen also nearly played on.

The batter would have been glad to get to lunch on 10. It was 25 overs after lunch when Potts eventually had him caught in the gully by Alex Lees.

Durham put their hosts in this morning, but from a bowling point of view, I don't think it's gone to plan so far.

  15. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex v Kent 190-9

Arshdeep is dropped by Doug Bracewell at long leg off his first ball after pulling Jamie Porter's shorter ball. Not the hardest chance, coming forward. A let off for Kent.

Arshdeep and Qadri were so sure that would be held that they didnt even run.

Jamie Porter has a face like thunder as he should have had three wickets in the over.

  16. wicket

WICKET Quinn c Walter b Porter 4published at 15:25 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex v Kent 190-9

First ball = back-foot punch through the covers for four.

    Second ball = out.

Matt Quinn holes out to tall Paul Walter and Jamie Porter has two wickets in three balls.

Arshdeep is the last man... his strike rate after five matches with the bat is 100. Second highest in the Championship.

    Don't go anywhere.

  17. wicket

WICKET Lamb c Burgess b Barnard 0published at 15:22 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Warks v Lancs 150-7

Danny Lamb's stay is a short one, as he fiddles at one outside off from Ed Barnard, and feathers one through to Michael Burgess behind the stumps.

Tom Bailey joins George Balderson in the middle.

  18. wicket

WICKET Stewart c Critchley b Porter 34published at 15:21 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex v Kent 186-8

Matt Critchley does indeed oust Grant Stewart... with his hands. Jamie Porter sends in one short and Stewart swivels on the pull, top-edging to Critchley at long leg.

Eight down and Stewart looks to the heavens. Sometimes those that live by the sword die by the sword. This is one of those occasions.

Matt Quinn joins Hamid Qadri, presumably to give it a biff too!

  19. wicket

WICKET Mitchell c Hain b Briggs 35published at 15:18 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Warks v Lancs 149-6

Daryl Mitchell looks to attack Danny Briggs, but can only top-edge a sweep shot straight to Sam Hain at short fine leg.

  20. Postpublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex v Kent 185-7

Matt Critchley is on to bowl for Essex. Paul Newton of BBC Radio Essex says Critchley's 'party trick' is to strike early in his spell.

Will he come up trumps here? Grant Stewart has 33 from 38 balls now, so sedate, while Hamid Qadri has 10 from 17 at the other end.
