  1. wicket

WICKET Cox lbw b Cook 0published at 15:01 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Essex 458-8 dec v Kent 207 & 143-4

No doubt at all about that one. A 16-ball duck for Jordan Cox, playing through a calf problem. Sam Cook fizzes one in which hits him in line with middle stump, ooh about halfway up.

Cook has 2-19 to add to his 3-19 in the first innings. He loves facing Kent.

Joey Evison comes in at six. No Joe Denly still.

  2. Division Two latestpublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

Sussex are now 49-3 in their second innings at Headingley, and still trailing by 99. But with the final day looking like a washout, Yorkshire will probably need to get this done today.

Glamorgan batter Billy Root is into the 90s at Cheltenham College. The visitors are flying on 382-5 against Gloucestershire.

Leaders Durham have just gone ahead of Derbyshire's first-innings 443. Scott Borthwick's side are 444-7.

  3. wicket

WICKET Davies c Latham b Overton 13published at 14:46 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Middlesex 238 & 100-3 v Surrey 433

Jamie Overton tempts Jack Davies forward and he edges to Tom Latham who takes a good tumbling catch to his left at second slip.

    Max Holden joins Mark Stoneman.

Middlesex still 95 short of making Surrey bat again.

  4. wicket

WICKET Leaning lbw b Harmer 6published at 14:44 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Essex 458-8 dec v Kent 207 & 132-3

Simon Harmer celebrates taking wicket for EssexImage source, Rex Features

Jack Leaning has been there for 42 balls but hasn't ever looked comfortable, if truth be told.

Simon Harmer skids one through and it thuds Leaning on the pad going back. Leaning thinks it's hit him outside the line but he has to go nevertheless.

The suffocating spell from Harmer has claimed a scalp. He has 1-30 off 24 overs.

Jordan Cox is next in, with Tawanda Muyeye as a runner due to a calf problem

  5. 50 runs

for Mark Stonemanpublished at 14:42 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Middlesex 238 & 88-2 v Surrey 433

A captain's innings. Stoneman brings up his fifth from 57 balls with a lovely punch down the ground to long off off Sean Abbott for his eighth four.

    A 70th first class half-century for the 36-year-old.

Middlesex need him to hang around all day here.

  6. Postpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Middlesex 238 & 84-2 v Surrey 433

Jamie Overton sends in a full and wide delivery which draws a slash from Jack Davies which sends the ball flying perilously over the head of the leaping gully.

Sean Abbott then finds the edge of Mark Stoneman's bat and drops inches short of slip.

Davies moves on to 10, Stoneman has 48. The deficit is 111. An uncomfortable session.

  7. wicket

    WICKET - Mitchell c sub (Ackerman) b Hamza 12published at 14:37 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Lancashire 327 & 59-4, Warwickshire 212

Daryl Mitchell goes for a big legside waft - and holes out to deep midwicket, sub fielder Marques Ackerman, who takes a second well-judged catch low down running in.

George Bell comes out to join Keaton Jennings, who has at least managed to make it into double figures now.

South African Ackerman, who is over here playing Birmingham League cricket, is on as replacement for Chris Rushworth, who is having treatment on a calf injury.

  8. Postpublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Essex 458-8 dec v Kent 207 & 125-2

Not going to use the dropped catch graphic as it was such a hard chance but Jack Leaning has survived a scare after clipping way too close to sub fielder, young Essex prospect Noah Thain at short leg.

Finch pulls Doug Bracewell to the rope to pick up the first boundary in nearly 14 overs - the last came to Ben Compton off Simon Harmer.

Leaning has six from 33 balls with Harry Finch on 65 from 123. Kent trail by 126.

  9. wicket

WICKET Robson c Latham b Abbott 20published at 14:17 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Middlesex 238 & 65-2 v Surrey 433

Surrey celebrate wicket of Sam RobsonImage source, Rex Features

Sean Abbott has been on the money in the last couple of overs and deservedly gets a breakthrough.

The Australian all-rounder gets one to straighten up a bit and Sam Robson edges to Tom Latham who takes a low catch to his left at second slip.

The hosts are 130 behind as Jack Davies joins Mark Stoneman.

  10. Division Two latestpublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

Runaway leaders Durham have gone past 400 for a fourth batting bonus point at Derbyshire. They're 403-5 and trailing the hosts by just 40.

Mark Steketee has made the breakthrough for Yorkshire in Sussex's second innings. The Australian got Tom Haines and the visitors are 42-1 at Headingley, still trailing by 106.

Glamorgan continue to pile on the runs against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham College. Billy Root is 65 not out with his side on 344-5.

Earlier Worcestershire beat Leicestershire by 100 runs at Oakham School.

  11. Postpublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Essex 458-8 dec v Kent 207 & 107-2

Simon Harmer back into the attack for Essex. He is wicketless but has conceded just 25 runs from 20 overs. Suffocating stuff in these circumstances. A real test of Kent's powers of concentration.

He's also taking a brilliant catch at a crucial time and produced a swashbuckling innings with the bat.

Just another week of Harmer being Harmer.

    The deficit is 144.

  12. wicket

WICKET Montgomery c Vince b Fuller 0published at 14:09 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Notts 77-4 (target 411) v Hants

Another wicket for James Fuller and Notts are in all sorts of bother.

Matthew Montgomery pokes at a full one from the Hampshire paceman and gets a healthy edge to James Vince at first slip.

Vince takes a good low catch.

  13. 50 runs

Partnership for Middlesexpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Middlesex 238 & 51-1 v Surrey 433

Mark Stoneman and Sam Robson were reunited in the middle after just three balls of this innings but have steadied the ship with a half-century partnership over the next 10 overs.

Stoneman has a run-a-ball 35 with six fours while Robson has 13 from 31 deliveries.

The hosts need at least 142 to make Surrey bat again, unless Mother Nature comes to their aid on the final day, of course.

  14. wicket

    WICKET - Salt c Burgess b Barnard 6published at 14:02 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Lancashire 327 & 36-3, Warwickshire 212

Lancashire lose a third wicket at Edgbaston as Ed Barnard strikes with the fifth ball of his third over.

Phil Salt gets a thin edge and Michael Burgess pouches the catch.

Daryl Mitchell is the new man in.

    Lancs lead by only 151.

  15. 50 runs

for Harry Finchpublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Essex 458-8 dec v Kent 207 & 102-2

He's been on 49 for over an hour - lunch included - but there is his 15th first class half-century from 105 balls.

A hugely useful one in the circumstances too. Promoted to bat at three ahead of Joe Denly and Jordan Cox, Finch has, for the second time in as many weeks, following a first-innings duck with a half century in the second innings.

He and Jack Leaning must continue their salvage operation throughout the afternoon.

    The deficit is under 150.

  16. wicket

    WICKET - Hameed c Middleton b Fuller 30published at 13:56 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Hampshire 166 & 344-5 dec, Notts 100 & 74-3 (target 411)

A bowling change works wonders for Hampshire as Jmaes Fuller comes on to take a wicket with his fifth ball.

Haseeb Hameed, who had not looked comfortable since lunch, edges and Fletcha Middleton holds on to the catch above his head.

Kevan James talking illuminatingly on what an improved cricketer Fuller is - and how much work Hants' revered bowling coach Graeme Welch has done with him to help realise his full potential.

  17. Covers off again at Edgbastonpublished at 13:54 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Lancashire 327 & 28-2, Warwickshire 212

The hover cover has hovered off, umpires Tom Lungley and Ben Debenham are back out here in the middle - and now here come the Bears too.

Followed by Phil Salt and Keaton Jennings.

    Panic over. Prompt restart time.

  18. Steady progress for Nottspublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Hampshire 166 & 344-5 dec, Notts 100 & 73-2 (target 411)

Runs have been trickling steadily since lunch at Trent Bridge, mostly from Joe Clarke, who is already on to 21.

Home skipper Haseeb Hameed has added just six runs since the break.

  19. wicket

WICKET Compton c Harmer b Walter 39published at 13:51 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Essex 458-8 dec v Kent 207 & 97-2

What a catch. My goodness. Amazing from Simon Harmer.

Paul Walter sends in a loose one down leg side, Ben Compton doesn't do that much wrong in truth, clipping off his hip, but Harmer dives full stretch to his right at leg gully to take an incredible one-handed catch.

Six inches wider and that was probably four, but as it is it's a precious breakthrough for Essex.

Jack Leaning is next in, with Joe Denly and Jordan Cox both resting injuries.

  20. Covers coming on at Edgbastonpublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Lancashire 327 & 28-2, Warwickshire 212

Not sure if it's cause for concern yet, as there are still 10 minutes to go until the end of the lunch interval, but the covers have just been hovered out to the middle. Maybe it is just precautionary by the groundstaff?

The skies overhead look grey and menacing. And the floodlights are on, but then they have been all morning. And it is a very similar looking day here to Saturday when T20 Finals Day was played out almost in fulness, despite all the direst weather warnings.
