England need Stokes to go on an absolute rampage. Stock up on sandwiches, do a Marsh in the next session...

On the first day of this series I spent the morning taking in proceedings from the Hollies Stand at Edgbaston. When Ben Duckett got out, Ollie Pope was roared to the crease with enthusiasm. There was a feeling of "it doesn't matter, if he doesn't get you the next batter will".

    That has totally gone now.

The smart, sensible cricket soon disappeared out the window - along with a few TV remotes/ cups of tea across the UK I'd imagine - when Moeen Ali top-edged a pull shot and was caught in the deep.

Chris Woakes was then shaken up after being hit by a bouncer, went into all-out attack mode and was caught behind on the pull off Mitchell Starc in the last over before lunch...

There was a period of recovery for England as Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali dug in.

A few eye-catching shots took the sixth-wicket stand to 44...

James Braithwaite: Just seems like a really wasteful batting performance from England.

Nicholas Rowland: The worst part of this is that it's happening in by far the best conditions for batting of the match.

England's batting is coming under plenty of scrutiny - as you'd expect at 142-7 - but the big difference between the sides at Headingley has been the catching.

Mitch Marsh added 106 runs after he was dropped, England currently trail by 121 with three wickets left.

So let's look at this morning's action and Australia's safe hands were on show early. David Warner pouched the catch after Joe Root edged Pat Cummins to first slip second ball.

Jonny Bairstow's loose drive off Mitchell Starc was held by Steve Smith at second slip soon after...

England fans shouldn't lose hope, stranger things have happened. Once in 1981 with Ian Botham and Bob Willis and again in 2019 by Ben Stokes.

There was a glum resignation from the crowd as they watched that Chris Woakes review.

There was so much optimism at start of play but much of it evaporated the moment Joe Root fell second ball and has never really recovered.

Todd Mills: Many, many infuriating and frustrating things about the ashes so far. But Mitch Marsh being the difference between the teams has just about finished me off.

It's been Australia's morning. It was up to Moeen Ali and Stokes to steady the ship and they did a good job of it.

Australia are well and truly on top. It's going to be tough for England.

It could've been a totally different day if Bairstow and Root had taken their chances. It's the old saying: "Catches win matches".

That's it for the morning session. It belongs to Australia and has done since Pat Cummins dismissed Joe Root with the second ball of the day.

Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali and now Chris Woakes have also departed. England are in a hole, trailing by 121 with just three wickets remaining.

The one positive is that Ben Stokes is still there. England need the captain to try and save them again.

It felt like a high risk strategy from Woakes and it has not succeeded. That confirms Australia's excellent morning.

Yep. There's a small spike on UltraEdge and that is enough to send Chris Woakes on his way.

Woakes had clearly decided he was going to struggle against the short stuff so his best bet was to try and smack a few runs before it eventually did for him.

He didn't get many. A well-directed bouncer from Mitchell Starc and it tickles the edge on the way through to Alex Carey.

Was it the approach to take so close to lunch?

That's an odd review, the umpire was confident and gave it out straight away.

Chris Woakes tries to pull Mitchell Starc, the ball goes through to Alex Carey and it's given out caught behind.

It's reviewed but not with a huge amount of confidence.

The way Woakes is trying to play the ball you would definitely want to play the short ball tactic.

It's fair to say that Chris Woakes isn't too comfortable against the short stuff - although you wouldn't know it based on the six he hit to start that Pat Cummins over.

He'll be on strike for what is likely to be the last over of the session after pulling for a single.

Steve Smith has just gone to field in front of the Western Terrace, with predictable results.

He looks to be having a bit of fun though as he orchestrates a rendition of “we saw you cry on the tele”.

This is a bit like watching Harry Brook bat.

A very different approach from Woakes than we saw from Moeen Ali.
