I think the Australians won't mind seeing that shot. If one bounces a little bit they might be able to take an edge but Moeen Ali is looking comfortable there.

    Moeen 18, Stokes 24

Four more to end the over.

On the pads from Pat Cummins and Ben Stokes times it nicely through mid-wicket.

Past the fielder and once that happens, there is no catching it. A good over for England.

Imperious stroke from Moeen Ali. Memories of David Gower playing that shot. He's a graceful player when he plays that shot.

  4. Eng 121-5published at 37.2 overs

    Gorgeous shot from Moeen Ali.

No real foot movement but he just strokes the ball through the covers for four as Pat Cummins offers the merest hint of width.

"Vintage Moeen," is the purr from next to me in the office.

The way this is going we need to think of the future. If the death of English cricket was mourned by burning of the bails, will the death of Bazball be mourned by burning a bucket hat?

Another Todd Murphy over, another that England take just a single from.

Ben Stokes remains keen to attack him but his reverse sweep is straight to a fielder and he gets off strike with a back-foot punch.

Pat Cummins is coming back into the attack.

Moeen Ali chips the ball invitingly to square leg midway through the Scott Boland over but the fielder is out on the boundary so it is an easy single.

The left-hander gets a genuine edge last ball, too, but played with soft hands and the ball bounces just in front of second slip.

A few Australia fans in the crowd thought it had carried. The Western Terrace enjoyed letting them know it hadn't.

The crowd is a bit quiet, they didn't want to see Joe Root out so early and then Jonny Bairstow after that.

It's a slower rate England are batting at. Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali are just rebuilding the innings here and they have stabled the ship a little bit.

That is a beauty from Scott Boland!

It nips away from fractionally back of a length to beat Ben Stokes as he played on the back foot.

The ball kept swinging after it went past the bat. The seam position was perfect.

Matthew Henry has disappeared from the press box.

Either he has dashed off to climb up onto that roof or he is getting as far away from it as possible.

    I'll let you decide.

  12. Eng 112-5published at 35 overs

Three overs from Todd Murphy, each of them has cost just a single so far.

It may not stay that way for long based on a couple of the shots Ben Stokes played in that over.

He missed with a big slog-sweep before driving firmly to long off for a single.

That boundary was needed. We'd just seen some TV pictures of Dickie Bird yawning on one of the balconies!

That's a classic Moeen Ali shot. Once you get yourself into the pitch it gets easier, we saw that with Mitchell Marsh yesterday. We haven't seen many boundaries today.

    Your positivity is appreciated, Dave!

Your reward is the news of an England boundary, driven gloriously through the covers by Moeen Ali.

Beautiful shot. It wasn't a half volley by any means from Scott Boland but Moeen middled it to the boundary.

Dave Ross: Law of averages tells us that 4th innings theory will come off at some point. Just get as close as we can this innings. Bowl well and let's see what we're chasing. It's exhausting staying this positive....

I really like Todd Murphy's action, the ball comes out of hand well. He reminds me of Graeme Swann, and I like his spectacles too.

  18. Eng 107-5published at 33 overs

Todd Murphy gets through another steady over, again costing just a single.

But we've got a delay at the end of the over because the physio is out to check on Ben Stokes.

Is it his knee? That doesn't appear to be the area being looked at. Whatever it was/ is, Stokes is going to continue.

I don't think that was ever in doubt, really.

Remember those lads on the roof of the house overlooking Headingley I mentioned earlier?

Well, they're currently being interviewed by Channel 9 in Australia!

Great effort from the reporter to climb up there.

What are Matthew Henry and Tom Mallows doing right now...?

What's most frustrating is how easy we're making things for Australia this series. Yes they're good but we're gifting them every opportunity to be that much better by how casual we're being. It's infuriating.

As much as I’m enjoying Bazball, Australia are clearly showing the future of Test cricket with bowlers as skippers. They’ve been aggressive and disciplined, freeing up the batsmen to do their job. Something the England squad could learn from!
