Chris Woakes is just going to keep swinging the bat.

His latest swipe at a short ball sees a miscue loop over the vacant mid-on region for two.

No suggestion that England want to play for lunch anyway!

Woakes doesn't want to be a standing target!

He clears his front leg and it's so dismissive and flies flat into the crowd. Stokes just watches it.

  3. 6 runs

Short from Pat Cummins and Chris Woakes launches it flat over mid-wicket for six!

He's middled that! What a shot!

Stokes has got a smile on his face and a grimace. He's going to have some bruises by the end of this Test match.

Chris Woakes pulls for a single before Ben Stokes is hit in the midriff from the last ball of the Mitchell Starc over.

We've got time for maybe two more overs before lunch.

For those clinging to the positives/clutching at straws, England gave away a first innings lead of 112 at Headingley in 2019...

Meanwhile, Chris Woakes has a new helmet and is ready to continue.

Self-destruct button pressed again. You can call this type of cricket whatever you like , but it's bordering on embarrassing now.

    Gio, Loughborough

England should be utterly embarrassed by how they've played. They've just been woeful. This will be the easiest whitewash the Aussies ever get. They're barely breaking a sweat. Way too easy.

  8. ouch!

    Eng 132-6published at 40.3 overs

The field is set for the short stuff as Mitchell Starc bowls to Chris Woakes - and sure enough the bouncer comes.

Woakes tries to turn away and is clunked on the helmet. It perhaps didn't get up as much as he expected and on comes the physio.

Concussion test time and a new lid for Woakes if he is OK to continue.

Chris Woakes has struggled against Pat Cummins. He's been out six times out for 51 runs from 121 balls.

  11. Eng 131-6published at 40 overs

Chris Woakes is the new batter and gives himself room before having a wild swipe at his second ball!

Are England going to try and hit their way out of trouble or was that just a rush of blood from Woakes?

There was a collective groan from the fans when that Moeen Ali shot looped up into the air, followed by stony silence.

I just don't know what he was thinking there, deep in the crease, hooks the ball and it literally goes straight to Steve Smith. All the troops were set and he just went for it.

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 39.4 overs

    Moeen c Smith b Cummins 21 (Eng 131-6)

That is not very clever batting.

Having got away with it two balls earlier, Moeen Ali goes for the pull shot again.

It's another top-edge, the ball balloons up and this time it does carry to Steve Smith at deep backward square.

    Stunned silence envelops Headingley.

I think Moeen was trying to go mid-wicket rather than deep square leg but that top edge meant it went backwards.

  17. Eng 130-5published at 39.2 overs

"Caaaatch!" is the cry as Moeen Ali takes on the short ball from Pat Cummins and the ball just hangs in the air.

Thankfully the connection was bad enough that it doesn't even come close to carrying to the men in the deep and it lands safely.

It'll just say one in the book...

  19. Eng 129-5published at 39 overs

A pair of singles from the Mitchell Starc over, one apiece for Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali.

We've got a little more than 20 minutes of the morning session remaining. Stokes and Moeen are digging in for England.

While England will be happy with that last over, they'll be less pleased to see the physio out to tend to Ben Stokes again.

The England skipper is clearly struggling but after knocking back a couple of tablets, he's ready to go again.
