Ashley Parker: Can't we just put a roof on all cricket grounds so we have no rain delays!?

How many runs if you sky one and hit the roof, Ashley?

The umpire, my colleague Sam Drury has discovered following some extensive research, is Nico Helwerth who hails from Stuttgart in Germany.

Judging by his choice of jumpers, and his catching, I think Nico might be a cricket fan.

Now then, I once interviewed former British number one Tim Henman about his cricket pedigree. In the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil, of all places.

He reckoned cricket and tennis had pretty good transferrable skills because, more often than not, you are reacting to a ball bouncing vertically. Henman was quite a handy cricketer in his youth, representing Oxfordshire at age group level.

All of which useful information leads to a fine grab by the umpire on Centre Court at Wimbledon where Carlos Alcaraz and Nicolas Jarry are currently battling it out.

    Check out the video below.

In case you are wondering the covers and ground sheets are still on at Headingley. No imminent prospect of play.

We are straying into early tea territory.

Am I the only one happy with the rain? I have tickets for Day 4 which last night I was convinced I wouldn't get to use. The ideal scenario is England chasing 220 in the morning.

The rain is back and it is heavy. The spectators in their seats are running for cover.

I'm starting to get serious doubts about seeing any play today.

The forecast for tomorrow morning looks great, with any rain due to come late afternoon. A case for starting play tomorrow at 10:30?

    Nick, Leeds

Definitely a case for it, Nick. Feels far too sensible to actually happen, though.

You know it's bad news when you are trawling the internet for ticket refund information...

According to the ECB major match tickets refund scheme:

For days one to four of the Test Match: If, for the day for which the ticket is valid, play does not take place OR play is restricted, you will be entitled to a refund of only the match ticket value subject to there being: (a) zero to 15 overs played - a full refund; (b) 15.1 overs to 30 overs played - a 50% refund. In no other circumstances can money be refunded.

One thing I’ve never understood: how does the rain affect tickets? Do you get a refund or do you take the wallet hit? Not really a pressing question for me, on my sun lounger in Tenerife.

  16. A quick recap...published at 14:00 British Summer Time 8 July 2023

England won the toss and inserted Australia and Mark Wood, who bowled with searing pace touching 97mph, took 5-34.

Mitch Marsh was the thorn in the side for England, though, as he made a run-a-ball 118 to help Australia to 263 all out.

England looked in trouble at lunch on day two at 142-7.

Despite struggling with his knee, Ben Stokes rallied in a blistering counter-attack to help England post 237. Mark Wood also chipped in with an eight-ball 24. Aussie counterpart Pat Cummins finished with 6-91.

Australia lost the key wickets of Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja without doing a huge amount of damage as England continued the momentum from their batting into the field.

Australia reached 116-4 at stumps on day two.

It's not great out there. There looks to be a heavy burst just to the south of Leeds. There is more rain gathering this afternoon in the East Midlands. Any play today, if there is any, is likely to be in short spells.

I have some good news, of sorts, as the umpires are about to come out and do an inspection so we'll likely at least get something in the way of a start time, hopefully.
