  2. England are in a 'winnable' position - Moeenpublished at 08:39 British Summer Time 8 July 2023

Moeen Ali says England are in a "winnable position" after his two wickets restricted Australia on day two of the third Ashes Test at Headingley.

Moeen removed Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith to move to 200 Test wickets as the tourists reached 116-4 at close, leading by 142.

England were earlier bowled out for 237 after another heroic innings from captain Ben Stokes, who hit 80 to rescue his side from 142-7.

"We have a good chance," said Moeen.

Speaking to Test Match Special, he added: "It's pleasing the day actually ended up quite nicely and we're still in a winnable position."

Ben Stokes' latest heroics are also prominent on The Guardian back page, while there is also a mention for Chris Woakes after he took the key wicket of Usman Khawaja last evening.

Meanwhile, Ali Martin says England cannot rely on Stokes alone as they try to mount an epic Ashes comeback, writing: "A captain with his own tankard and bar stool at the last chance saloon can only get them so far."

    The Daily Telegraph

Let's look the back pages of the Saturday papers and optimism abounds after England fought their way back into contention after lunch on day two at Headingley.

The Telegraph focus on Steve Smith's cheap dismissal and another day of Ben Stokes brilliance.

Nick Hoult writes: "There is something about Headingley that stirs the blood of English cricketers and thanks to Ben Stokes this series is still pulsing with life."

Ben Stokes took that momentum and ran with it.

Another swashbuckling knock from the England captain took England to within 26 runs of parity in the first innings, something that had looked inconceivable at the lunch break.

It certainly has been, Ares - and not just with the ball.

The fast bowler did his bit with the bat, beginning England's fightback yesterday afternoon by hitting the first ball of the session for six.

He departed for 24 from eight balls but his brief stay was enough to sway the momentum back in the home side's favour...

Should the weather hold, England will be hoping for a better start than they got on day two.

Former skipper Joe Root fell to the second ball of the day when he edged Pat Cummins to first slip.

Cummins went on to take 6-91 but he did go around the park after lunch...

  12. England desperately battle to keep Ashes alivepublished at 08:05 British Summer Time 8 July 2023

    Matthew Henry
    BBC Sport at Headingley

Ben Stokes provided yet more heroics and his bowlers crucial late wickets as England desperately battled to keep their Ashes hopes alive on day two of the third Test at Headingley.

In an innings reminiscent of his famous knock on the same ground four years ago, Stokes' 80 dragged his side from 142-7 to 237 all out before Australia slipped to 116-4, 142 ahead, at the close.

Stokes' knock meant the tourists' first-innings lead was just 26, despite four wickets falling in the morning session - including Joe Root with the second ball of the day to Pat Cummins, who claimed 6-91.

The England captain attacked after lunch, launching five sixes and six fours, while Mark Wood helped swing the momentum with 24 from eight balls.

In reply, despite the loss of David Warner for one, the opener again caught off Stuart Broad, Australia eased to 68-1 and a lead of 94 as they threatened to take a firm grip on an enthralling Test.

But Moeen Ali removed Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith in successive overs before Chris Woakes dismissed Usman Khawaja in the final hour.

Travis Head and first-innings centurion Mitchell Marsh survived the final 45 minutes to leave the Test, in which a win would seal the series for Australia, finely poised.

That's just as well for England because the forecast at Headingley isn't too encouraging today - and there might be rain around on Monday, too!

Fortunately, with Australia 116-4 in their second innings, leading by 142, it might only need a day or so of play to get a result.

Whether that is the result England need to keep the series alive is an entirely different matter. This match could scarcely be more delicately poised.

Two days down, three to go - but the speed at which this Test is moving, we're not going to need them!
