"England chipped away at Australia's batting on a tense and fluctuating first day of a crucial fourth Ashes Test," is the verdict of my colleague Stephan Shemilt.

England's pace bowler Stuart Broad speaking to BBC Sport: "It's been a nice day of Test cricket, the sun has been out in Manchester too, which is rare.

On 600 test wickets: "Never in my dreams did I think that would be a thing. Vaughan was the skip that gave me my first cap and my ultimate feeling there in Sri Lanka was never that it was the end game but instead that I wanted to win series and create memories. Some player feel like they have achieved what they wanted to after getting a Test cap and I've been fortunate enough to create memories. Never did I think I would be up there with the greats of the game.

"Most of the player I've played with have the mindset of continuous improvement and ultimately for me in training is that I am always looking for something to change and improve on because that brings intensity to my training. For my own mental freshness, it's about having something I am working on.

"Bowling coach wise David Saker is back with us and it's been a pleasure to work with him. Otis Gibson has really helped me too. I've probably used their brains and picked bits from them. Ultimately, it's Jimmy Anderson, I've been so lucky to play with him and be born in the same era as him.

"My mum has been an amazing support for me and her mindset has always been playing for fun and it always felt like a hobby to me and I've reconnected massively with that, Baz and Stokes that's been their philosophy and I've loved every moment of it.

"We want to win the game we'll be doing everything in our power to do that."

What we've seen from Jimmy Anderson in the previous three Tests is not the Jimmy we know. He's had the chance to be impactful with the ball from his end and England certainly went in the sentimental way by picking him. I think on this surface Josh Tongue would have been incredible but I understand England's decision to pick him.

A little more from Stuart Broad on Sky Sports: "The nightmare today would have been Australia 350-3 at the close so we are delighted to take eight wickets. A lot of balls were middled but there were big wicket balls in there as well.

"It's not nipped or swung all over the place. We weren't winning the toss and hoping for 160 all out, put it that way. We will see what tomorrow brings when both teams have batted on this pitch. You usually think of Test matches that have longevity here. Days two and three can be a fantastic time for batting at Old Trafford."

I didn't think Jimmy Anderson would get close to 700 wicket or that Stuart Broad would get close to 600 wickets, but I knew they would have really good careers. In that team in Sri Lanka, he was the first bowler that would tell me how he wanted the field. The want to win and to get out there and do it is what makes him stand out.

He's been the stand-out in the innings throughout the Ashes. He's Mr Ashes and has been fantastic.

Stuart Broad, speaking to Sky Sports, after taking his 600th wicket: "It was a pretty decent day and there is something nice about getting a 600th pole from the James Anderson End! It's a very special feeling. When I went past Glenn McGrath, my hero growing up, that was really cool. I suppose it's a thing of longevity and I am addicted to Test cricket. I like the grit and competitive nature of it. It's great to be on that list with some of the greats of the game.

"I remember getting my cap from Ian Botham in Colombo and my mindset was never playing Test cricket was the achievement, but having an impact on it. I've played in some great teams along the way."

On whether Ashes cricket brought the best out him: "I think so. I like the extra scrutiny and how much the public in England and Australia love it. I've been able to forge battles against some players for a long time - people like David Warner and Steve Smith. For me it's been my ability to back up and play consistently. My injury record has, touch wood, been good for a while. The last year has been the most enjoyable of my career."

I'm intrigued by this pitch, I don't think you can play aggressively constantly. England will come out tomorrow and bat quickly. I think Australia have lost an opportunity here, Marnus will feel he gifted England a wicket. The other wickets were good bowling from the England players.

Chris Woakes is just a master of the Dukes ball, he's a brilliant cricketer in this country.

Stuart Broad leads England's players off the field having reached the milestone of 600 Test wickets. He is given a generous round of applause by those fans who are still in the ground and plenty of pats on the back from England's coaching staff.

The Aussies will be disappointed that no one in their team was able to get a real big score.

Starc is unbeaten on 23 and will resume on day two with Pat Cummins, who has a single to his name.

A filthy fetch outside off stump from Mitchell Starc and he inside edges a pull off James Anderson down to fine leg for four.

He was fortunate not to drag that on to his stumps.

Anderson can only chuckle to himself.
