On the field Cameron Green has faced a testing over from Stuart Broad, edging through the slips for four before being beaten outside the edge of his bat a ball later.

Broad is fifth on the all-time list of Test wicket-takers, incidentally.

  2. Broad's 600th Test wicketpublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Feast your eyes on this.

Here's the moment Stuart Broad collected his 600th wicket in Test cricket.

I don't think it's a bad thing for Ben Stokes to put himself back on the boundary. It's easier for Marsh to hit over the ground than to drive because of his power.

  4. 6 runs

    Aus 209-5published at 52.2 overs

Mitch Marsh, broad shouldered and bulging biceps, uses his reach to muscle Moeen Ali for a six over long on.

    A big hit.

That's gone into the confectionary stalls, and out again.

That's the Marsh from Headingley! That was the shot of the day. He leans back and just uses his power.

  6. Aus 203-5published at 52 overs

Tremendous strokeplay from Mitch Marsh as he is offered a bit of width by Stuart Broad from his fourth ball and creams it to the fence for four.

What an effort from Broad, I was his captain that gave him his first Test cap in Sri Lanka and now 16 years later he's got to 600.

  8. Aus 197-5published at 51 overs

Stuart Broad sheepishly takes the applause from the crowd as goes back to his fielding position down on the boundary.

He's up to fifth on the all-time list of wicket-takers in Test cricket.

Moeen Ali, freshly shaven head, raps Mitch Marsh on the front pads with the third ball of his first over after tea as the Aussie all-rounder defends. A hint of interest in a review, but Ben Stokes declines. Maybe some bat on that?

Standing ovation around Old Trafford as the big screen flashes up that that is 600 Test wickets for Stuart Broad.

What an achievement - and a big wicket in the here and now, too!

Hugs all round! I hope Broad waves to his mum who didn't know he needed two more wickets to reach his 600th Test wicket.

  11. wicket

    Head c Root b Broad 48 (Aus 189-5)

SIX HUNDRED Test wickets for Stuart Broad.

A bouncer from Broad which Travis Head decides to take on with the hook. The ball gets big on Head and he is unable to get enough of the meat of the bat on it.

Joe Root runs in from long leg and dives forward to pouch the catch. Great work from the former England captain, not typically a player you associate with grabs in the slips.

Broad laps up some of the praise from the crowd after the stat appears on the scoreboard.

Listening with my wife Hannah on our honeymoon on the beach in Croatia - she’s thrilled we didn’t pack the lucky cocktail sausage container we were holding at Headingly at the start of the run chase on day three. One of my groomsman Ivan took it on day four at Leeds and has vowed to take it to Old Trafford on Friday. Let’s hope it’s as lucky on the other side of the Pennines!

    Alistair and Hannah in Vis

You'll both be pleased to hear there's actually a cricket ground next to a vineyard on the island of Vis. The Sir William Hoste Cricket Club was founded in 2002 by the Croatian islanders after learning that he had organised the game there during the British occupation of the island at the start of the 19th century.

Stuart Broad, hunting his 600th Test wicket, will bowl the first over after the tea.

Umpires Joel Wilson and Nitin Menon have just ventured out on to the turf at Old Trafford, swiftly followed by England's players.

A few wisps of cloud in what is predominantly a blue sky now. A light breeze blowing across the ground.

  15. How's stat?!published at 15:56 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

There have been only two County Championship matches at Old Trafford this season - one in April and one in May. But in those matches spin took 11 wickets at an average of 65. Additionally, there's been less spin in T20 Blast matches at Old Trafford (39% of all deliveries) than in seven years.

Australia don't trust Todd Murphy so as soon as Cameron Green was fit we knew they would not pick the spinner. It's a huge decision not to go in with a front-line spinner, but do they Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head and even Steve Smith to call upon.

With the forecast as it is and although the Aussies would never own up to this, the draw will suit them nicely, so you can understand why they have omitted Todd Murphy.

Realise the forecast is a bit iffy, for Saturday in particular, but you do have to wonder if Australia will rue not picking a spinner for a fourth innings on this pitch.

Well, I didn't quite bring you the flurry of wickets that England fans were hoping for, so let's see what the evening session will bring.

It's over to Timothy Abraham to take the reins and see you through the break, and the rest of the day.
