  2. 'I play my best when I don't let the bowlers settle on me'published at 18:59 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

More from England's opener Zak Crawley, speaking to BBC Sport: "There were a few nice shots today, I think that's what I have done well this series is stick to what I know. I've been asked by the coach to make an impact at the top and I've tried to do that and I play my best when I don't let the bowlers settle on me. I like this way that I play.

"I was thinking that if the ball was there I would put it away.

"We're in a very good position, see how we start in the morning. We have two very good players in. We'll see how we go tomorrow and try to get as big a lead as possible. It will be nice to get a nice lead.

"We'll just keep trying to score quickly. It will be nice bowling last. I think the pitch will start playing tricks so the bigger lead we can get, the better.

England's opener Zak Crawley speaking to BBC Sport: "It was nice to get the score today and we're in a really good position as a team so that's great.

"I rode my luck at times and played some really good parts in the innings and there were other parts where I was really streaky but I'm happy with how I have played. It was a special day.

"I just keep backing the game and I've done that well this series where I just keep trying to play the way I play and that's the only way that is going to work for me. I've just tried to bat and sometimes I have gone away with low scores but this series I have stuck with it and I felt like there was a score coming and I was in good nick. Today I rode my luck and thankfully the score came.

"I was really pleased with how I played, it's a special day. I hadn't hit a six for three years I think, usually I hit the ball down the ground but there was nice wind that way so a couple of those were nice. I really enjoyed that straight drive off Pat Cummins, that might've been my favourite."

We should not overlook the importance of Joe Root's knock today. He scored 84 and complemented Zak Crawley perfectly in their riotous stand.

Crawley and Root put on 206 from just 186 deliveries.

England, of course, need more runs in the morning and then attention will turn to getting the 10 Australian wickets they will need to keep this Ashes series alive.

The low bounce, slightly on show for Zak Crawley's dismissal but definitely evident when Joe Root fell for 84, will give them hope of being able to wrap things up.

  6. 'This is why Crawley is in the team'published at 18:50 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Glenn McGrath
Ex-Australia bowler on BBC Test Match Special

This is what I expected what Bazball could be and the potential of it. Everyone was in the same boat today, there were going to be one of two things happen: England get bowled out or they fire.

Zak Crawley is such a good-looking player, you enjoy watching him. He's always had that potential, sometimes those players just need a bit of luck. Australia didn't know where to bowl to him, he can bat both sides of the wicket, has no problem with the short ball and this is why he is the team. This is the potential of Zak Crawley. I have enjoyed watching him bat.

It's been a tough run for Pat Cummins so far, we've always said as fast bowlers it's not easy because when do you switch off? As captain you can't do that. Maybe we're seeing the impact of the fifth Test for him in a short amount of time.

  7. 'Cummins hasn't been switched on'published at 18:48 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I just wonder whether the incident of Jonny Bairstow has had an effect, since then I've seen a different Pat Cummins and those big moments can affect you as an individual.

Tactically, he hasn't been that switched on. The closer you get to making your legacy the scarier it gets. England have ripped that 317 apart.

England don't need to overthink it, they should be aggressive and if they can get 200 in front then fantastic. England will have earnt the right because they have played good cricket.

When Zak Crawley did reach his hundred it was a superb moment for a batter always under pressure.

He ended with a stunning 189 from 182 balls - the second fastest century at Old Trafford in Test cricket.

  9. Australia spooked by Bazball?published at 18:45 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I've been staggered by Australia's tactics. This isn't a mentality we've seen. Have they been spooked by Bazball? They look like a team that is holding on to those two wins and the England team don't mind loosing so they will be aggressive.

I've never seen Pat Cummins with so many fielders on the boundary. Crawley just nullified everything that was thrown at him.

When England started their reply to Australia's 317 they were right under pressure and that only intensified when Ben Duckett was caught behind to leave the hosts 9-1.

But from there Crawley and Moeen Ali, England's temporary number three, compared for a crucial stand of 121.

They were measured while hitting the bad balls with Moeen Ali hitting 54.

  11. 'Good fun'published at 18:43 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

England opener Zak Crawley, speaking to Sky Sports: "Today was good day for us. We are in a good position as a team

"It was good fun. I rode my luck at times but hit some good shots along the way. I do doubt myself at times but I have to say 'keep being me'. That is the way I play. I am quite streaky but then I go on a run.

"They [coach and captain] tell me to go out and have an impact. Sometimes I am going to have streaks of a low scores but thankfully today it came off.

"They don't want me to lose days like today. If try be more consistent might lose a day like today. I much prefer this, a few low scores and then a big one."

What a day for England. They've moved the game on quickly and we've seen a really special innings from Zak Crawley.

    Roll on on day three.

  13. 'Crawley so dangerous'published at 18:40 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

England have delivered. In Crawley they have a player that is so dangerous. He was well set there and it was just the natural way he strikes the ball. He takes risks and plays some big drives but that's the way he played.

That was the faith he has been shown by the management. He averages 28 in Test match cricket, England play a certain brand that completely suits Crawley. They have picked him consistently for today. That innings has put England on the front foot and this moment will be spoken about for a long period of time, particularly if England go on to win the Ashes.

It's been stunning. This Ashes series serves up something extraordinary. It was simply spellbinding. What a perfect foil Joe Root was for Zak Crawley and it seemed like it left the Australian's scratching their head.

There were seven bowlers used in 70 overs by Australia. It's a difficult place to defend Old Trafford and Crawley just seemed to hit them everywhere.

How long ago does the start of the day feel?

Australia were batting when it began.

James Anderson struck with the very first ball of the day and, despite a wicket off a no-ball from Chris Woakes, England wrapped up the innings for the loss of another 18 runs.

It has been a day to remember that's for sure. It was dominated by Zak Crawley and what a position England find themselves in today. A run-rate of over five runs an over. It's been a dramatic day.
