It was close to the stumps and Cummins released that so quickly, brilliant agility from the skipper.

This has to go down as a missed chance for Australia as Ben Stokes sets off for a single that is never there. It's Pat Cummins with the throw from mid-off. He misses with Stokes a long way short.

It's my first day at a Test match. I am happy to take all the credit for today's England performance.

Watch the best shots from Crawley's brilliant 189
Jim Maxwell has just called Zak Crawley's knock one of the best ever played in Ashes cricket. Jim has seen a few.

Shot! After edging a couple from his second ball get off the mark, Ben Stokes drives his fifth to the boundary.
The pitch is definitely starting to do a bit, even with the new ball. England need to get another 100 you'd think, however, and then they'll be able to really pile the pressure on.
Here's Ben Stokes...

Joe Root can't believe it. You can't do anything about those balls. That was a controlled innings from England's best.
Root b Hazelwood 84 (Eng 351-4)
Bowled him!
That has pretty much rolled along the floor. There is nothing at all Joe Root could have done about it.
He has played back to a ball that should have reached hip height but did not get much above his shoelaces.

Joe Root, as soon as he went out there, has been busy and has a new technique against the short balls. He's looked so determined.

Most of Australia's fielders are on the boundary now.
Cameron Green's bouncers are not carrying much venom. It's like the cuddly toy version of a cobra rather than the real thing.

Australia have looked a bit rattled today. Pat Cummins has followed the ball a lot. Sometimes when a team plays like this, it completely shakes you and before you know it it's about restricting the runs and not getting wickets.
Root 81, Brook 5
There's a fair bit of grump in Josh Hazlewood's walk after Joe Root places another one in a gap for two. One ball in the over shoots low, squeezing between Root's bat and pad in another boost for England's bowlers. There's still something there.

That was a special innings from Crawley, a joy to watch. He really got into his rhythm of striking the ball.
Here's how Zak Crawley's superb innings finally came to an end on 189...

Australia are into a really defensive mode. Cameron Green is bowling round the wicket and banging the ball in to Joe Root and Harry Brook with the field set back. The England pair swing away five singles but there's little chance to hit boundaries off that.
Andy Zaltzman
Cricket statistician on Test Match Special
Zak Crawley's 189 came from 182 balls. He hit three sixes and 21 fours. He had only hit one six in his entire Test career before today.
It's his fourth Test hundred and his second highest after that 267 against Pakistan.
In terms of highest score of England openers against Australia Crawley is joint seventh highest. The only players that have higher are Alastair Cook, Graham Gooch, Geoffrey Boycott, Len Hutton and Herbert Sutcliffe.
A truly extraordinary innings. England's highest against Australia in a home Test since 1997 when Naseer Hussain made 207.
Root 77, Brook 1
Josh Hazlewood gets one to nip back off the pitch and hit Joe Root on the pad. He goes up for a pleading appeal but with the field spread he has little support from his team-mates.
The tech shows the ball hit Root outside the line.

Respect where it's due. Australia's response to Crawley was class. Great to see.

Harry Brook has made his way out to the middle. If he gets in the next hour could be really fun.
Watching the replay of that Crawley dismissal, that ball kept low from Green. That's not the worst thing for England in the situation.
