The Party Stand takes a break from their mocking appeals every ball to salute Joe Root.

It’s fair to say the fans in here are enjoying their day - that things are going well for England is just a bonus at this point.

The noise levels are really ramping up with cheers coming every time the ball is sent into the outfield. Travis Head does well to flick the ball back to prevent Zak Crawley getting another boundary.

What a way to reach your half-century. There's not many Yorkshire batters who will reach it with a shot like that.

Joe Root gets out the Roop - the Root Scoop - again.

This time it goes for four and that's his fifty from 45 balls.

Truly time to go full Bazball now. Get 200 ahead by early tomorrow AM and skittle them out for a three-day victory and put it all on the fifth Ttest…

    Chris, Bucks

Dear Ben, Please don’t declare tonight. Thanks ever so much. From every England Cricket fan!

Pat Cummins was about to make the T sign there. It turns out Root got a big inside edge anyway.

  7. Not outpublished at 45.1 overs

    Well, well!

Pat Cummins were just about to call for a review for an lbw against Joe Root but it's called a no-ball.

Zak Crawley has been quite circumspect since tea. As if England know they have got themselves in a good position and don't want to blow it.

  9. Eng 249-2published at 45 overs

Things continue to gently proceed in relatively sedate fashion after tea. Josh Hazlewood bowls just the second maiden of the innings and Crawley's response is to change his bat.

With the amount this series has ebbed and flowed, the cynical Englishman in me worries one wicket here brings the Aussies right back into the game.

    John, Sheffield

What was it Glenn said earlier? Whoever wins today wins the Ashes?

  11. Eng 249-2published at 44 overs

    Crawley 138, Root 47

Australia are desperate to try and get rid of this ball. They think it has gone out of shape.

The umpires tell them to get on with it.

This match is moving on at a blistering pace, it has done ever since Pat Cummins was out to the first ball of the day.

  13. Eng 246-2published at 43.1 overs

Josh Hazlewood sprawls in despair on the fine leg boundary. Zak Crawley nabs the first boundary of the session.

Crawley has 136 not out from 135 balls. Outrageous.

    Andy Zaltzman
Cricket statistician on Test Match Special

Zak Crawley century was just the 16th time an England player has scored 100 runs in a session.

The last two were scored by Ben Stokes - at Cape Town in 2016 and that innings at Headingley in 2019.

I've got a tab open for the Old Trafford weather and I think it is going to stay there all weekend. Saturday's dodgy forecast is the backdrop to all of this.

Australia definitely look like they've had a get together at tea. Things are much more settled now than in the rip-roaring two hours before the break.

    Alex Hartley
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

It was all so frantic from Australia before tea. There was a field change after every ball, it was reactive.

They weren't in control at all. So tea came at a really good time for them.

  17. Eng 240-2published at 42 overs

After all that there was one run and a lot of mock appealing from the crowd in that Pat Cummins over.

I wonder what Australia talked about during tea, because they went from plan A to plan Z and everything in-between during the afternoon session.

They were all over the place.

  19. Eng 239-2published at 41.3 overs

As far as I could see the umpire didn't give any decision there.

Australia basically got a bonus review because the umpires checked whether the ball carried.

The crowd is getting into the Aussies now.

    That's off the pad.

Not a great decision by the umpire.
