  1. Join us on day five...published at 18:51 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

You can watch highlights of the 30 overs of play we have had today on Today At The Test on BBC Two at 19:00 BST.

The programme will also available on BBC iPlayer at that time, or the hour of choosing, here...

"England dodged the rain to take the vital wicket of Marnus Labuschagne but their Ashes hopes remain in the balance going into the final day of the fourth Test against Australia," is the verdict of my colleague Stephan Shemilt.

You can read his match report from an abridged day four here...

We will, of course, be back with you bright and early tomorrow morning with live text commentary of the fifth and final day on the BBC Sport website. The Test Match Special team will be on air at 10:00.

    Enjoy your evening.

  2. 'We got more play than we expected'published at 18:51 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

England batting coach Marcus Trescothick speaking to BBC Sport: "Really frustrating you know, in Manchester you get a little bit here, but we got more play than we expected. Today looked like a complete washout so it's a bonus. We're one wicket closer but it's still frustrating.

On the light call: "I think we all thought it was manageable we didn't think it deteriorated a great bit and looked like we could bowl seamers. But, that's their call and they will have a different view and that was the end of it.

On Chris Woakes: "He's nursing a stiffness in his legs. He's had a busy couple of weeks, as all bowlers. We'll keep an eye on him and see if he can perform tomorrow.

"There was a bit of effort there with the spin and Rooty got some balls to spin. You will need the spinners to attack from one end. The dampness around is going to change that and the new ball might make an impact.

"Root has a golden arm, he makes something happen and change the momentum of play and that can change the course of the game.

On the prospect of play tomorrow: "I think it really does depend on the weather. We wanted to get two or three wickets today and we'll take any play we can tomorrow."

  3. 'A very special hundred'published at 18:44 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

Australia's Marnus Labuschgne speaking to BBC Sport: "It's hard to judge where I feel with it. Obviously it's always very special getting a Test hundred. It doesn't happen too often but I'm disappointed I couldn't get us to tea.

"I feel like my game is in a really good space now. Coming into this game I was confident about my technique and how I was batting. I was able to be confident and go back to my strengths, forcing their hand to bowl a lot of balls at me and take time out of the game.

"I love talking to all the coaches and seeing what their point of view of the game is."

On the light call: "It sometimes so hard to judge because we're so used to playing with lights on and if you take them off it becomes so hard and batting with red ball under artificial light is so hard. It's not a call for the players, we just handle it from there.

"We were so close to having a tremendous day there. We only needed 60 more to be within England's first innings total. The wicket feels alright, the ball change seems to have more swing and that'll be a challenge in the morning, if we get play tomorrow. For us, this is about saving this Test match and retaining the Ashes."

  4. Play abandoned for the daypublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

Well, that brings a largely frustrating day to an end with official confirmation that play has been abandoned for the day.

Given that no play at all looked possible at the beginning of the day England would probably have bitten your hand off if you'd have offered them the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne, even at a cost of him making a first Test century in England.

England need the weather gods to shine on them tomorrow, if they are to win this Test match and go to The Oval at 2-2.

Unfortunately, there's little prospect of any more cricket today given how long it will take to get the ground fit enough for play to resume. We are just waiting for the final word that it is abandoned for the day.

England didn't get the movement they would have hoped for today. I'd quite like to know what is happening with Chris Woakes. Will Mark Wood's body make it to The Oval? Stuart Broad has already played in four Tests can he do another one? Jimmy Anderson, we have to be honest, hasn't been his best throughout this series.

If England get out there again tonight, they need to get through their overs quickly, so they can get to the new ball ASAP!

It's a numbers game for England now. You have to get the balls bowled. It doesn't matter how. They just need to get out there and bowl those balls to get the wickets. New ball, old ball or whatever.

This England team have done wonders for revitalising Test Cricket and then we find ourselves hamstrung by the nonsense of having to take tea when most of the day has been lost to rain. ¿Qué?

It's a light, persistent, annoying rain. It seems with the wet and damp around, we probably aren't going to get any play.

For the people that did come, knowing what the prospects are, it's a great effort.

  12. Postpublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

Effectively, we need the players and umpires on the field by 19:00 BST for play to restart.

There are people playing cricket with a bat and a paper beer cup as a ball in the stands. It's not looking good for getting out there.

I thought England were a bit flat today. There wasn't much of their usual chatter and the noise from the players you get when you are going for a win.

The weather is a bit better. There's still a bit of mizzle and drizzle but not quite as bad as it was a few minutes ago. But the covers are well and truly still on here.

It seems ridiculous to take tea when it's dry with rain forecast to come soon. Comedy cricket again.

There's still fans in the stands hanging around and clinging on to the prospect we might yet see some more play in the next couple of hours.

Marnus Labuschagne has had a disappointing tour with the bat. I was expecting big things from him in this Ashes series. I think that's the third time he's been out to the off spinner. He's technically looks the same but there have been lapses in concentration. He batted beautifully here and maybe the situation focused the mind. That might be a match-saving innings for Australia.

It's almost a dead cert that Marnus Labuschagne scores a hundred in Australia. His record is phenomenal. It's a surprise that he hasn't managed to do the same thing overseas. For him to get over the line in a series he hasn't really made the impact people thought he would. His familiarity with English conditions, playing for Glamorgan, you would have thought he would stamped his authority sooner.

  20. How's stat?!published at 17:28 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

Marnus Labuschagne's score in this innings of 111 is his highest score in Tests outside Australia. It is also the first time an Australia number three batter has scored an Ashes Test hundred in England since Steve Smith at The Oval in 2015.
