I think Jack Leach would have done really well in this Ashes series. I had a chat with him before this series started and he was really excited for it and felt part of this bowling unit. He was devastated to get that stress fracture.

We've not quite had anything as dramatic as the ball of the century this summer, and most of the chat around spinners concerns those who have been absent for some, if not all, the series: namely Jack Leach and Nathan Lyon.

Growing up watching England and this incredible Ashes battle during 2005, everyone used to talk about Shane Warne and the ball of the century. He had this persona about him that just made things happen.

I Iove players like that. Growing up in cricket watching that 2005 series, I knew that I wanted to hang out with him, I never imagined that I would but during that series I remember thinking: "He looks like a cool guy".

The first time I worked with him was during a T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. He was brilliant and very respectful and working in Australia was when I got to know him better. He had that experience of making you feel so comfortable, he was so supportive and loyal.

When I had Shane's respect that's when I really felt confident. He just made you feel 10 times taller and I see that in Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. I think he would have loved to see England playing like this.

  4. 'I was petrified of facing Warne'published at 15:09 British Summer Time 23 July 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

All I remember was 2002 was the first time I faced Shane Warne. I remember looking at loads of videos of Shane, and that's not a good look when you're about to face a bowler because most of the videos I was watching came back to that great ball.

It frightened the life out of me to think I was going to face this legend of a bowler and I was in an England side that a lot of players had been beaten by the Aussies in the early 2000's, so when I asked a few senior players how it was to face Shane, there wasn't a great deal of positivity coming back.

After a couple of deliveries I thought he's just a leg-spinner but a very good one. He showed me the googly quite early too. It was his persona and what he brought to bowling, it wasn't just leg spin, it was a genius skill and theatre that he had created.

It was a mindset, I was petrified facing him.

Thanks, Callum. I'm afraid it is still raining cats and dogs at Old Trafford.

Anyway, it's 30 years since Shane Warne did this with a cricket ball and some of the Test Match Special team have been remembering his impact on the game.

The legendary former Australian leg-spinner passed away in March 2022 at the age of 52.

Having split the nation on whether a cookie is a dessert or not and been shocked that people keep biscuits in the fridge I am going to disappear.

Timothy Abraham is going to take over. Hopefully he brings you some cricket but it is raining potentially as heavy as we've seen it all day.

Old Trafford is just a very deflated place as the rain continues to fall. The spectators are drifting away, piling onto the tram behind the media centre. There are long faces in the press box.

It wasn’t supposed to end like this.

Who 'keeps' chocolate? Never last long enough for storage to be a consideration in our house.

It's still raining heavily at Old Trafford.

There's no imminent prospect of any play or indeed inspections.

Another office debate we've been having today: should chocolate be kept in the fridge or cupboard/out?

Thumbs up for fridge, thumbs down for anywhere else.

I have a basic understanding of scoring in cricket, but want to know what would happen if rain cancelled play today? Would it count as a draw? or an England win?

    Scott

A reminder for everyone that if no play is possible today then the fourth Test will finish as a draw.

That means Australia will retain the Ashes because England will only be able to at best draw the five-Test series 2-2.

If they are getting to watch it then you guys might as well enjoy Stokes' part of the partnership again too.

Rain is really coming down hard now. There's not much wind so it's very vertical.

Three overs feels a little unlikely right now Adam, never mind three hours.

It is still raining at Old Trafford and it looks like it has got a lot darker and more set in.
