Inevitably, some meteorological puns have made it on to the back pages of this morning's papers including the Sunday Express.

In among four other sporting puns is the 'Weather you like it or not' headline alongside a rather depressing picture of a soggy Old Trafford.

"England will look to grab any chance of a vital win today after railing against the umpires' decision to restrict their attacking to spin bowling last night," writes Gideon Brooks.

    A brief weather update.

We still have threatening grey skies over Old Trafford but it has, for the time being at least, stopped raining as we get a temporary break in the showers.

People are scurrying about and are doing so without the need to put their hoods up or open umbrellas.

We will have someone from BBC Weather with more detailed information about the forecast ahead of the start of play.

England will go on to win the Ashes if they can force a victory on the final day of the fourth Test on Sunday, says former captain Michael Vaughan.

Australia will resume on 214-5, 61 runs behind, so if England take five quick wickets they will level the series before next week's finale at The Oval.

However, more poor weather is forecast for day five after rain allowed only 30 overs of play on Saturday.

Vaughan told Test Match Special that day five "decides the series".

"If England win they'll win at The Oval, whatever team Australia pick," he said. "Australia will be totally gone in terms of energy.

"If Australia get away with it - and they'll need some weather to help - then the momentum and energy will be back in Australia's legs."

  4. Labuschagne goes but Ashes in the balancepublished at 08:22 British Summer Time 23 July 2023

BBC Sport chief cricket writer at Old Trafford

England dodged the rain to take the vital wicket of Marnus Labuschagne but their Ashes hopes remain in the balance going into the final day of the fourth Test against Australia.

On a fourth day that could have been entirely lost to rain, a period of dry weather allowed 30 overs of play from 14:45 BST at Old Trafford.

England were frustrated for a long period by Labuschagne, who made only his second overseas Test hundred and shared a stubborn partnership of 103 with Mitchell Marsh.

As the light faded, England were ordered to bowl spin and Joe Root's off-breaks provided an unlikely source of inspiration.

He had Labuschagne caught behind by juggling wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow for 111 and almost had Marsh held at short leg.

Rain arrived at the scheduled tea break of 17:00, preventing any further action and leaving Australia on 214-5, still 61 short of making England bat again. Marsh has 31 and Cameron Green three.

With more bad weather forecast for Sunday, England are left hoping for enough time to force the win that would level the series at 2-2 and turn the fifth Test at The Oval into a decider.

Though victory is now almost out of the question for Australia, a draw would be enough for them to retain the urn.

We will, of course, bring you updates on the weather forecast as we head towards the scheduled start of play at 11:00 BST. In the meantime let's take a moment to recap what happened on Saturday.

It absolutely bucketed it down in Manchester last night but I can confirm the ferocity of the rain has subsided this morning.

There's very light rain over Old Trafford at the moment but it is quite breezy and much warmer than yesterday which, in theory at least, should help dry the ground and assist any mopping up which needs to be done.

There are breaks in the showers and, like yesterday, we should get a window to get some cricket in if the ground conditions are dry enough.
