You can't underestimate what Crawley and Duckett have brought to the innings both here and at Lord's. They have seen off the new ball, piled the runs on and left England in a great position. Lets hope England actually capitalise on this unlike at Lord's.

England are setting the game up nicely but I'm very interested in what they are thinking.

Their bowlers needing a rest, the weather forecast, the pitch still playing well. There is a lot for them to consider.

England's top four have all reached at least 35.

It is just the second time since 1985 that England have done that against Australia.

    Wow. That is just sublime.

He's making Mitchell Starc look like he's bowling about 70 mph.

There's a flurry of excitement in the Australia field as Joe Root very nearly chops onto his own stumps.

That uncertain shot clearly isn't playing on Root's mind though as he then plays a perfectly controlled pull away for four to move England onto 193-2 at drinks.

Given they lost Zak Crawley in the second over of this session they can be pretty pleased with their efforts this afternoon.

I do like the look of Todd Murphy.

He's got a lovely action and looks like he is going to be a very handy heir to Nathan Lyon.

    Root 31, Stokes 37

England do show some attacking intent from Todd Murphy but they only manage three singles from his first over back into the attack.

A moral victory perhaps for the Aussie off-spinner.

Always a joy to see the Root scoop - or the Roop as my colleague Matthew Henry likes to call it - comes out.

We may have retained the Ashes but it really does feel hollow, having played such boring negative cricket. Only one team are trying to win anything and it’s not us. This isn’t the Aussie way.

There's a change at the other end too as Mitchell Starc returns to the attack.

England nudge three singles to keep the score ticking over.

Mitchell Marsh's spell last just one over as Todd Murphy returns.

My most memorable cricket memory is getting Sir Garfield Sobers' autograph after watching him score his last Test century at Lord's in 1973 (150 not out). He just made batting look so effortless.

That is England's 41st six of the series which sets a new record for an Ashes series.

Australia hit 40 in their drubbing of England in 2013-14.

We just want to build our lead, Joe! But he makes it look so easy.

There it is! The Root scoop comes out as Joe ramps Mitchell Marsh over Alex Carey's head for six.

Marsh arrows the next delivery down leg and Root flicks it away for four.

We were asking the question about Bazball and whether it has evolved and it definitely has, because just look at how they have played the short ball.

At Edgbaston and Lord's we saw one after the other falling to it, not learning, whereas here we've just seen Joe Root still taking it on, but happy to knock it down for a single.
