Zak Crawley lives by the sword and dies by it. He was so entertaining, it was a scintillating innings.

Today's play was kicked off with a beautiful rendition of Jersualem by The Alzheimer’s Society choir. The England players also swapped their shirts and wore their teammates names in the pre-match line-up, to draw attention to confusion often experienced by people living with dementia and how people with dementia lose precious memories.

Pat Cummins has got Joe Root a few times in the series and you can see him coming out of his crease already to try and counter the movement that he gets.
It's good to see him being so proactive. We didn't see anything like that from Marnus Labuschagne yesterday when he was getting in trouble.

Joe Root showed no ill-effects to that nasty blow on the chest/hip, pulling a short delivery away for four to bring up England's 150.
At the end of the over the crowd bursts into life with a rendition of the Great Escape, perhaps a sign that England need a bit of a lift at the moment in this tricky post-lunch spell.

Root was trying to evade the ball there but got into such an awkward position.
It nipped back a long way from Cummins and has pinned him on the hip.
Ouch. Pat Cummins gets one to jag back into Joe Root and the ball slams into side of his chest, just above the thigh guard. That looked painful.
All of a sudden things are happening for Australia

All that was missing from the 2019 shot were the arms in the air and Jack Leach.

Shot.
It is short and wide from Josh Hazlewood and Ben Stokes clatters it away for four - an almost identical shot to the one that won the 2019 Headingley Ashes Test.

I want to ask the Australia bowlers who the hardest England batter to bowl to is, and I bet Zak Crawley is near the top of that list. He never looks out of nick.

I get the feeling Zak Crawley has played himself in a bit more as the series has progressed.

Inky: Superb from Cummins. Much needed wicket for Australia.
There is a bit of tension in the air now as Joe Root sees out the rest of Pat Cummins' over.
That is just the start Australia wanted.
"Roooottt" echoes around The Oval.
Here comes Joe.

That's the Zak Crawley way of getting out - playing a big drive to a length ball outside off stump. The momentum he creates at the top of the innings is great for England, though, and that was a good innings.
Crawley c Smith b Cummins 73 (Eng 140-2)
Edged and gone!
Zak Crawley flashes hard at a delivery outside off stump and a thick edge flies straight to Steve Smith at second slip, who takes a sharp catch.
An important breakthrough for Australia early in this session.

Ooof, Josh Hazlewood finishes the over with a snorter that leaps up off the pitch and flashes past the outside edge.
Some encouragement for Australia.
Pat Cummins will open at the other end.

That was England's 40th six of the series, which ties the record for the most in Ashes series - alongside Australia's 40 in the 2013-14 series.
