There's definitely been a bit more in it for the bowlers after lunch.

That was a lovely contest between Cummins and Hazlewood with Stokes and Root.

My favourite memory is Adelaide December 2010 when Graeme Swann got the last Australian wicket just before lunch on day five to put England 1-0 up. On the walk back to town through the park, the heavens opened and a thunderstorm came in that would have saved Australia if they batted for another 20 minutes.

It's an important passage of play.

Cummins and Hazlewood are bowling very nicely but they can't go on all day.

Stokes was just ball watching, and Joe Root was almost next to him by the time he noticed.

It was just on the wrong side for Pat Cummins to get it back quickly enough and that's saved Stokes.

Fizzed past the outside edge! Ben Stokes flashes at one outside off stump and very nearly feathers through to Alex Carey - though a very late no-ball call would have saved Stokes anyway.

England rotate the strike well with some ones and twos, though one single was a little risky as Pat Cummins fielded well off his own bowling before hurling in a good throw to the non-striker's end.

Burgsey: I do hope England are keeping an eye on the weather. The next two days are looking a bit like deja vu, when considering the outcome at Old Trafford. There is not going to be a lot of cricket tomorrow and Monday.

    Just superb from Joe Root.

He uses his feet and his wrists perfectly to turn it into a half-volley and just clip it away for four.

  8. Eng 163-2published at 32 overs

That's a lovely shot from Joe Root as he skips down the track and clips the ball through midwicket with immaculate timing for four.

We have just seen a shot of Harry Brook dozing off on the England balcony. Clearly feeling no nerves.

It has just got a little quieter after the loss of Crawley.

England do not want to make the same mistake as they did at Edgbaston and at Lord's, where they got into promising positions and threw them away.

It still looks a good pitch. I reckon they'll need at least 300.

My favourite cricket memory is from the 100th Test at Lord’s in 2000, aka ‘The Ultimate Test’, between England and West Indies, which famously saw play from all four innings on the second day. My brother Dan and I were there for the climax on Day three, and when England squeaked home to win by two wickets there was a rare pitch invasion of the hallowed ground. We joined in and found ourselves walking next to Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh, on their last ever appearance at the Home of Cricket. 'Well played’, we said to the giant duo, craning our necks to what felt like cloud level. Curtly peered down and gave us a look that said, wordlessly, ‘Not now, mate.’ Fair enough.

It's getting a bit tight for time for the Aussies to chase these down isn't it? They'll need 100 overs to chase 200....

It wasn't a very threatening short ball. They are testing him with it, but he's just helped that on its way.

Relief for England as another tricky over from Pat Cummins ends with a short ball gloved away fine for four by Joe Root.

England just need to hang in there at the moment.

Zak Crawley's huge stride nullified any spin Todd Murphy might have hoped to find from The Oval pitch - the England opener scored 26 off 16 balls against the offie.

I reckon Australia had a bit of a talking-to at lunchtime.

A top-edged pull from Joe Root brings a rather fortuitous single to end the over.

Australia have been very good so far this session.

    Joe Root survives - just.

Nervous cheers ripple around The Oval.
