Can anyone get anything to The Oval for Matt to eat, please? If you're here, we're in the outside bit of the press box, front row, to the left as you look at it. Come talk to him about it.

Seems an appropriate time in the series to remind Matthew Henry that during the World Test Championship final earlier this summer, he said if Cameron Green didn’t get at least 20 wickets in the upcoming Ashes, he’d eat a Baggy Green. Perhaps unexpectedly, Green has only played three Tests so let's call it a revised 12 wickets (if my maths is correct). Green has ended up with less than half of that number. We were advised by Matt to screenshot his comment and remind him in July, so I thought I’d kindly oblige.

    Thanks for the reminder, Ewan...

Starc tests Crawley with a short ball, but it's dealt with easily. He pummels it for four.

It's been a typical Crawley innings.

Sometimes streaky, sometimes brilliant, always entertaining.

  6. Eng 112-1published at 22 overs

Four more to Crawley but this one is less glorious.

He skips down the pitch again, tries to hit down the ground but gets a streaky outside edge over the cover fielder.

He shakes his head with a wry giggle.

    England's lead reaches 100.

Here's how Australia got the wicket of Ben Duckett after a smart review.

  8. Eng 105-1published at 21 overs

Ben Stokes, not to be outdone, produces some sweet timing to swat Mitchell Starc through mid-wicket for four.

Starc fights back with a beauty that shoots past his outside edge.

It's definitely not calming down in the 15 minutes before lunch. Don't go anywhere.

Zak Crawley is such an elegant batsman. He is tall and likes to play his shots, but doesn't try to overhit it. He times the ball so sweetly.

He looks like he will score off every ball with that positive, aggressive intent.

And now he has confidence. He looks like he is enjoying it out there.

Zak Crawley punches down the ground for three to bring up his half-century and England's 100.

It is his 10th fifty in 39 Tests, to go with four centuries.

He really is having a fine series.

Maybe Pat Cummins needs to go in and switch the bails.

    Oh, Zak Crawley.

A little shimmy down the pitch and produces the most picturesque drive through the covers for four more.

He retains the strike with a single from the next ball and moves on to 47.

Standenberg: When Ian Botham moved to Worcestershire he was regularly joined by his rockstar mates. Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Eric Clapton and Elton John at a game vs Leicestershire on my 13th birthday in June 1987. I got all their autographs at lunch but got blanked by Lord Gower.

I don't think Australia started very well. They were bowling both sides of the wicket and conceded too many runs. So they have had to fight back.

They needed that wicket of Duckett and would dearly love to take another one or two before lunch.

Stokes gets momentarily distracted by a wasp or fly and kindly swats it out the way - thankfully for the insect, not with as much force as he tends to hit a cricket ball with.

Mitchell Starc, meanwhile, seems to have finally found a bit of rhythm after a horrid start.

I don't think bringing Todd Murphy into the attack is the right move by Pat Cummins.

The ball was just starting to move with a few clouds over The Oval.

Stokes gets off the mark rather unconvincingly, with an edge off spinner Todd Murphy that bounces just short of slip.

Zak Crawley, utterly unbothered by losing his opening partner, follows it with a much more authoritative sweep for four. That was crunched.

My favourite cricket memory was playing a game for North Leeds CC years ago, while Bruce Springsteen was playing close by in Roundhay Park. I walked out to bat, accompanied by the opening bars of Cadillac Ranch. I was back in the ‘ranch’ before the end of the song. That day, Bruce was The Boss and I most certainly wasn’t.
