James Rew is a phenomenal player with the statistics he's delivered. At 19, he's scored five hundreds this year and quite often he's coming in at 80-4 and providing crucial runs.

He is a phenomenal player but he doesn't fit the Ben Stokes mould of taking the game on. He is what you'd call a classical batsman. But he probably has more shots than he's shown.

I like this suggestion because, for me, he is the hopeful shoo-on for four years' time: James Rew of Somerset.

Five first-class centuries already and he's not even 20 yet.

Matt Potts and Will Jacks think deserve a mention, both done well when called upon.

    Dan in Salisbury

Jamie Smith will be a mainstay in the England team by 2027.

Surely Archer will have recovered from injury by then?

The scenes at The Oval are not good.

The simplest way I can put it is that it's absolutely hammering it down.

Jonny Bairstow is the other one. He's almost 34 now so I think he's a no.

But I don't want anyone to tell him that I said that.

I think we can safely say James Anderson won't still be playing.

Chris Woakes? No. Mark Wood? No, not in four more years.

James Rew has been brilliant for Somerset this season. Surely he’ll be in the squad soon.

    Tom in Norwich

Crawley, Duckett, Pope, Root, Brook, Stokes (as batter / spinning all-rounder). The rest is rather tricky!

    Che in Leeds

I think the top 6/7 could be the same but think the bowling is where the biggest change will be. Ahmed, Atkinson, Tongue, Mahmood potentially the four bowlers.

I'd like to give a shout out to our mate Myles who has just left The Oval as he doesn't think there's any more play this afternoon. Myles also turned down a ticket to Day 4 at Headingley in 2019. It can only mean one thing.

England struggled to make the ball do anything yesterday but took three quick wickets with it when it was changed this morning.

Two to Chris Woakes, and one to Mark Wood.

But how much of a difference did the ball change make? Here's some analysis.

Five of the England XI that played in the Oval Test in 2019 are playing in this match. But Stuart Broad is gone after this one.

Jack Leach would be here if he wasn't injured. Sam Curran is still in the mix, too.

Question marks over the captain, Ben Stokes. With his knee, is he still going to be captain in 2027?

He'll be 36, younger than Stuart Broad is now and a talismanic character that is on a mission. It could be his last series. Could that be his farewell?

Let's put him in as captain.

Right then, let's have some rain delay fun.

The TMS team are selecting their England Ashes XI for 2027.

Who would you bring in? Will Stokes still be there? Will a 44-year-old Jimmy Anderson still be charging in?

I was adamant that the Mitchell Starc catch was not out and I think the same with this one. I don't see how you can give it out.

Where the decision on the Stokes catch is wrong is that England shouldn't have lost a review. They weren't reviewing whether the catch was clean, they were reviewing whether or not Steve Smith hit it. Then it is for the umpires to decide if it was taken cleanly.

Take the Mitchell Starc catch at Lord's. That is an umpire's review to decide whether he was in control of the ball or not.

Just seen the clip on the website and much as it pains me to say it, the umpire got that one right.

    Jon, disappointed in Huddersfield

It's a stinker plain and simple. He knew what he'd done and I'm not sure why he didn't fess up straight away and preserve a review.

    Rob in Reading

Having watched the Stokes dropped catch on a number of occasions, it can only go down as sloppy cricket.

Henry Moeran is showing me the doom. What I'm looking at is rain that extends from Peterborough all the way down the south coast of England and as time passes... 15:50 we can start the clean up. So an hour and 40 minutes of rain.
