    Northants 98-3 v Lancashire

Tom Bailey has smashed Sam Whiteman's pads, just above the knee roll, but there's a shake of the dead from the umpire.

Lancashire's cordon was jumping up and down and Bailey was contorted in appeal.

Whiteman's heart is going like the clappers. Must be a touch high. But only a touch.

He's on 40 from 68 balls and is a big scalp.

    Lancashire remain on top.

  2. wicket

WICKET Vince c Rew b Gregory 34published at 13:22 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Hampshire 94-3 v Somerset

A bit of controversy with this one!

Lewis Gregory, whose stock delivery today has been the outswinger, gets one to move the other way and James Vince takes a swing at the ball as it flies through to James Rew.

Vince didn't appear to think he'd hit it - but the umpire clearly spotted an inside edge and the Hampshire skipper has to go.

  3. Division Two updatepublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

An early breakthrough for Derbyshire at Scarborough, with Finlay Bean lbw to Anuj Dal without adding to his 41 not out at lunch.

Yorkshire are 99-3 in the 31st over and George Hill has now come out to join James Wharton.

Just a single added by Gloucestershire in the early stages of the afternoon session at Leicester. They are 74-1 in the 32nd.

  4. wicket

WICKET Roderick lbw b Harris 43published at 13:19 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Worcs 78-4 v Glamorgan

James Harris strikes in the third over after lunch and there's to be no half-century for Gareth Roderick.

The Pears opener is struck on the front pad, up goes the umpire's finger and he has no option but to trudge off... no reviews available in this form of the game!

Kashif Ali comes to the crease.

  5. 50 runs

for Tom Hainespublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Durham v Sussex 108-0

He's ridden his luck, taking 22 balls to get off the mark and then producing a couple of inside edges past the stumps and another over the slips.

But after 93 balls and seven fours that's his fifth half-century of the season.

He brings it up with a textbook cut to the deep point boundary... straight out of the Haines Manual.

  6. Postpublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Hampshire 94-2 v Somerset

Just as he did in the first session, Lewis Gregory takes the ball for the first over of the second - and there's a scare or two for James Vince.

The Hampshire captain edges one just short of second slip and then wafts at a wider delivery, which flies just clear of gully and away to the boundary to take him to 34 not out.

  7. Postpublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Northants 90-3 v Lancashire

With all the pressure on him Sam Whiteman gets four, and another life.

He's flashed an edge into the slips off the final ball of the Tom Bailey over.

Will Williams throws a paw at it but the ball deflects away rather than continuing to Keaton Jennings and races to the rope.

A sharp chance, but still a chance.

  8. 50 runs

for Jamie Smithpublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Surrey 114-2 v Warwicks

    Jamie SmithImage source, Rex Features

Four balls into the afternoon session, Jamie Smith punches Oliver Hannon-Dalby away off the back foot and takes three runs to bring up a 56-ball half-century.

It's been a fine exhibition from the right-hander so far, and he has also gone past 700 Championship runs for the season in this innings.

  9. Postpublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Northants 86-3 v Lancashire

Tom Bailey sends down a very wide wide to start the afternoon session.

Seven ball overs are not what you want on a sunkissed afternoon like this...

Can Lancashire continue to pile on the pressure after the 40-minute interlude?

    Northamptonshire 85-3 v Lancashire - lunch

Two wickets late in the opening session earned Lancashire parity after opting to bowl first at Wantage Road.

At 77-1, Northamptonshire looked to be sailing in calm waters until a horrible mix-up between Emilio Gay and Sam Whiteman - coupled with a brilliant stop, pick-up and throw from Dane Vilas in front of the West Stand - saw the former run out.

Jack Blatherwick's extra pace then proved the undoing of Luke Procter, who failed to keep down a brute of a ball and departed for a duck.

Much now depends on Whiteman, playing his final match for Northamptonshire before heading home to begin preparations for the new season in Australia.

  12. Pears fight back after poor startpublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Worcestershire 72-3 v Glamorgan - lunch

    Nick Webb
    BBC Radio Wales

It was a morning session of two halves at New Road as Glamorgan reduced the home side to 33-3, only for Gareth Roderick and Adam Hose to launch a fightback.

With sun overhead and not much grass evident, it was slightly surprising when Kiran Carlson chose to bowl first.

But his seamers justified the choice as Timm van der Gugten found the edge of Jake Libby’s bat, Azhar Ali chipped Jamie McIlroy tamely to mid-wicket and Jack Haynes provided Chris Cooke with a second catch as James Harris found some movement.

Roderick offered a difficult slip catch off Zain Ul Hassan on 23, which was not taken, and Hose started positively as the Pears steadied the ship in this battle of two promotion contenders.

    Gloucestershire 73-1 v Leicestershire

Tom Scriven bowling to Chris DentImage source, Rex Features

They've had to work hard, but Gloucestershire will be content to reach the interval at Grace Road with only one wicket down.

Ben Charlesworth hit six fours in his 32 off 40 balls before being bowled by Tom Scriven.

But Chris Dent (31*) and Ollie Price (8*) have been unable to replicate his fluency in the face of some tight bowling by the unbeaten home side - who still have hopes of promotion, having already reached the One-Day Cup final.

  16. Lunch at Scarboroughpublished at 12:37 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Yorkshire 98-2 v Derbyshire

Yorkshire skipper Shan Masood won't be happen with that shot.

Just three overs before lunch at North Marine Road he tries to cut a ball from Sam Conners and edges to the keeper.

James Wharton uppishly cuts Conners for four in his final over of the morning and reaches the interval on eight not out, with Finlay Bean on 41, having been there since the start.

  17. Lunch at The Ovalpublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Surrey 111-2 v Warwickshire

Ed Barnard sends down a couple of jaffas to Dom Sibley and is perhaps unlucky not to pick up his second wicket of the morning.

Sibley responds with a well-timed push through the covers for four to reach 36 not out and after a caught-behind appeal by Warwickshire is turned down by the umpire, that is lunch.

Jamie Smith - who is three runs short of 50 - and Sibley have added 80 in tandem since Barnard bowled Ryan Patel in the 12th over.

Rory Burns was the other man to go, caught at slip at Chris Rushworth, but Division One leaders Surrey are rebuilding well.

  18. Lunch at the Ageas Bowlpublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Hampshire 90-2 v Somerset

A solid start for Hampshire, particularly after losing Fletcha Middleton for a duck to Jack Brooks in the second over.

Toby Albert, making his County Championship debut for Hampshire, was the other man to depart, caught at point off Ben Green, but Nick Gubbins and James Vince have advanced the Hampshire total steadily since then.

The skipper has raced to 30 not out, overtaking Gubbins, who goes to lunch on 29.

  19. Lunch at Wantage Roadpublished at 12:33 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Northants 85-3 v Lancashire

The visitors will tuck into their meal with gusto after a good comeback late in the opening session.

Emilio Gay's calamitous run-out for 35 looks a big blow with Hassan Azad and Luke Procter failing to contribute meaningfully.

Sam Whiteman remains there on 34 and has the weight of expectation on his shoulders.

  20. Lunch at the Riversidepublished at 12:33 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Durham v Sussex 100-0

Tom Clark was dropped by Ollie Robinson off Bas de Leede on 22 and is on 45 at lunch, despite an ill-advised waft just before lunch.

Tom Haines has ridden his luck with a couple of inside edges but is on 47 at the break.

Sussex have a solid platform. Durham await a breakthrough.
