  1. Postpublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Hampshire 136-5 v Somerset

A smattering of boos from the Hampshire faithful as Jack Brooks' appeal for a caught and bowled is rejected by the umpires.

Liam Dawson appeared to play a bump ball back to the Somerset seamer, who stuck out a hand to grab it and then appealed for the catch.

But the umpires confer and agree a bemused Dawson is not out. Hampshire remain five wickets down rather than six.

WICKET: Whiteman lbw b Hartley 79published at 14:55 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Northants 170-5 v Lancashire

It looked like it would be Sam Whiteman's day, but he's finally gone.

In his final Northants match he got a leading edge as he tried to hook Tom Bailey away but the ball sailed over the slips and to the rope for another boundary.

A couple of balls into the next over though he has finally been pinned lbw by Tom Hartley as he tries to play across the line into the leg side. He has to depart for 79 from 127 balls with 12 fours and a six.

The 36-run partnership with Saif Zaib is over.

  3. wicket

WICKET Sibley run out 65published at 14:48 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Surrey 187-4 v Warwicks

Dom Sibley calls for a single, but Ben Foakes doesn't respond after taking evasive action at the bowler's end.

Sibley tries to recover his ground but is beaten by Oliver Hannon-Dalby's throw to the keeper.

An unfortunate dismissal to end his 171-ball innings. Sibley must be feeling a little 'steamed'.

  4. Postpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Northants 158-4 v Lancashire

Sam Whiteman has survived his 348th appeal of the day... this time for a stumping.

Phil Salt whips the bails off after Whiteman tries to whack newly-introduced spinner Tom Hartley away but the square leg umpire said Whiteman's foot never left his crease.

He remains in the middle on 71.

  5. wicket

WICKET Gubbins b Bashir 49published at 14:47 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Hampshire 135-5 v Somerset

Nick Gubbins must have felt a half-century was there for the taking - and he'd have deserved it too.

The left-hander had just started to emerge from his shell, coming down the track to clout Shoaib Bashir over the top for six in his previous over.

But he tries to work the spinner to leg for the single that would have taken him to 50, misjudges the line and the ball zips through to hit middle and off.

  6. Postpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Surrey 187-3 v Warwicks

Will Rhodes provides too much width and Ben Foakes square cuts for four and progresses to 32 not out.

His partnership with Dom Sibley - on 65 - is now worth 57.

  7. Postpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Northants 156-4 v Lancashire

Saif Zaib has picked up three boundaries and moved to 16 from 25 deliveries.

At the other end Sam Whiteman has slowed down somewhat but still has 70 from 118 balls.

These two are trying to dig in to ensure Northamptonshire are able to pick up some rare, but precious, batting bonus points. They have just three this season across 10 games.

  8. 150 runs

up for Worcestershirepublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Worcs 150-6 v Glamorgan

Not sure exactly what Zain ul Hassan did to get on Logan van Beek's wrong side, but the Pears man continues his sustained assault by lifting the Glamorgan seamer over mid-on for another four that brings up 150.

Van Beek is 22 not out and Brett D'Oliveira has 17, with the partnership on 40.

  9. Division Two updatepublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

Leicestershire tighten their grip on the game against Gloucestershire as Chris Wright bowls James Bracey for a duck.

The left-hander paid the price for offering no shot and his side are now 109-5 in the 49th over.

Yorkshire have arrested their mini-slump at Scarborough and are 166-4 in the 51st over, with James Wharton 42 not out and Jonny Tattersall on 21.

  10. Postpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Durham v Sussex 154-4

Matt Parkinson so nearly had a fourth, but he has nobody to blame but himself.

Tom Alsop drilled the ball straight down the track back to him, but he couldn't get his fingers around the ball and the chance went begging.

Ollie Robinson then whips the bails off and appeals for a stumping from the fifth ball of the over - huge appeals but the umpire is unmoved.

    Uncomfortable over for Tom Alsop.

  11. wicket

WICKET Dent lbw Scriven 51published at 14:31 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Gloucs 108-4 v Leics

Gloucestershire in trouble now at Grace Road as Chris Dent's 141-ball innings is ended by a straight one from Tom Scriven.

The Leicestershire seamer is in his 10th over and now has figures of 2-11. Impressive stuff.

  12. Postpublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Surrey 168-3 v Warwicks

Henry Brookes overpitches and Ben Foakes just places the bat in the line of the ball and it runs away for four to the on-side of the stumps at the bowler's end.

Foakes really does make batting look simple at times but even that, allied to his peerless keeping, is not enough in the Bazball era.

  13. wicket

WICKET: Coles c Bedingham b Parkinson 4published at 14:27 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Durham v Sussex 153-4

    Three for Parkinson.

James Coles is a bright young prospect but it's another cheap wicket. He's cracked Matt Parkinson straight into the hands of Daniel Bedingham who is stood at silly mid-on. It's not like he couldn't see him.

Parkinson has 3-13 off five overs. Oli Carter is the new man.

That's 42-4 in 13.5 overs after lunch. Sussex need to stop the rot.

  14. Postpublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Worcs 145-6 v Glamorgan

Logan van Beek is displaying what you might call a bit of Dutch courage to try and haul Worcestershire out of trouble.

Van Beek has taken a liking to Zain ul Hassan, hitting him for four boundaries as he and captain Brett D'Oliveira attempt to put together a significant partnership.

They've added 35 so far, runs that could yet be valuable in this key promotion clash.

  15. 50 runs

for Chris Dentpublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Gloucs 106-3 v Leics

    Chris DentImage source, Rex Features

The reliable Chris Dent is fast approaching 600 Championship runs for the season and reaches another 50 from 138 balls with a cover drive for four off Tom Scriven.

It has been a patient knock so far and exactly what Gloucestershire need following those two Wiaan Mulder wickets.

Ireland's Harry Tector, making his Championship debut for the visitors, is two not out at the other end.

  16. Postpublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Surrey 159-3 v Warwicks

Henry Brookes beats Dom Sibley with the final ball of an over which costs him five runs.

BBC Berkshire commentator Rita Green reminds us that Kraigg Brathwaite, who is making his Warwickshire debut in this game, has now played for five different counties.

Can you name the other four?

  17. Parkinson takes two in three overspublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Sussex 145-3 v Durham

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Leg-spinner Matt Parkinson, who is on loan from Lancashire, has taken two wickets in his first three overs, including one with his first ball.

That was Tom Clark, who was on 58 when he edged to Matthew Potts at first slip. Sussex were 130-2 at that point, then 144-3 when Cheteshwar Pujara lost his cool on four.

He tried to drive Parkinson's final ball of the 43rd over but it was snatched out of the air by Graham Clark at short extra cover.

It was an uncharacteristic moment from Pujara and a big moment for Durham, the Division Two leaders.

  18. Prest 'red-ball game needs attention'published at 14:16 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Hants 114-4 v Somerset

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

Jack Brooks (1-9) and Lewis Gregory (1-10) bowled two excellent spells straight after the break and have put Hampshire under pressure.

Losing James Vince was a big blow and young Tom Prest went soon afterwards.

Prest has been in excellent form in the One Day Cup continuing where he left off from it last season. He's also impressed in the T20 in the last couple of seasons but his red-ball game needs attention.

There is no doubt the 20 year old is a talent but he has a top score of just five from four innings in Championship cricket this season.

  19. 50 runs

for Dom Sibleypublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Surrey 149-3 v Warwicks

    Dom SibleyImage source, Rex Features

Henry Brookes returns for Warwickshire following a morning spell of three overs which cost him 25.

What he doesn't need is sloppy work by his fielders - but exactly that by Dan Mousley gifts Dom Sibley a boundary and a 137-ball half-century.

It's the fifth time he has passed 50 this season and he'll be hoping to covert it into a second hundred.

  20. wicket

WICKET: Pujara c Clark v Parkinson 4published at 14:10 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Durham v Sussex 144-3

Big wicket. Cheteshwar Pujara must have got a bit impatient, tries to flash Marr Parkinson away for a boundary but can only offer up a diving chance to Graham Clark at extra cover.

Another fine catch but a big blow for Sussex, losing their skipper and talisman so cheaply, and so avoidably.

Sussex have lost 3-34. James Coles is the new man, joining Tom Alsop.
