    Surrey v Northants 23-0

Kemar Roach is bowling a fuller length to Emilio Gay, who is beaten outside off stump.

Hassan Azad leaves Dan Worrall outside off as the bowler attacks from around the wicket with three slips.

Worrall's fifth ball beats Azad outside off as the opening batter tries to defend. Done for pace there.

These are tough conditions to bat in against quality bowling.

    Maiden over.

  2. Play delayed at Tauntonpublished at 11:08 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Somerset v Kent

    It's very grey indeed here.

All the covers are still on the square.

Don't expect play here any time soon.

  3. wicket

WICKET Stoneman c Burgess b Rushworth 13published at 11:06 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Middx 20-1 v Warwicks

    The breakthrough at Lord's.

Late movement from Chris Rushworth almost finds Mark Stoneman's outside edge.

Then with the next ball, the seamer does take the edge as the former England opener tries a forward defensive. Super bit of bowling and great use of the Lor'd slope.

    Jack Davies is next in.

  4. Postpublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Essex 11-1 v Hampshire

Only a brief delay thankfully. But 45mph winds, overcast conditions and a previously used wicket, mean this is likely to be a testing day for the Essex batters. Keith Barker appeals for lbw against Tom Westley. Nothing doing for the left-arm seamer.

    Surrey v Northants 23-0

This pitch is definitely one of the quicker ones at the Oval.

Kemar Roach continues to get steep bounce outside off stump.

A close shave for Hassan Azad, who looks to leave the fourth ball of Roach's over and edges just short of a diving second slip.

It has brightened up a bit here at the Oval, where we've fared somewhat better than most grounds weather-wise so far.

Dan Worrall bowls round the wicket to Emilio Gay, who clips the ball away beautifully in front of square leg for four.

Lovely timing, adjusting well to a bit of late swing.

  6. Postpublished at 11:03 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Middx 20-0 v Warwicks

    Ooof, that's close.

Oliver Hannon-Dalby swings one across Mark Stoneman and it's just a whisker away from finding the opener's outside edge,

Then it does find the edge but it goes all the way along the ground for two.

More swing, but this time it finds the middle of Stoneman's bat for three more runs.

  7. Postpublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Surrey v Northants 17-0

Emilio Gay is forward to Kemar Roach, playing the West Indian bowler back down the pitch defensively.

    Maiden over.

Surrey attacking with four slips for both Roach and Dan Worrall, who bowls to Hassan Azad.

A near run out as Emilio Gay is late to respond to a call to run. Azad trips over a fielder on the first run and then picks up a second on an overthrow, leaving his bat behind!

Two more runs to Azad with a drive through the off side.

    And breathe.

    Essex 11-1 v Hampshire

Very disappointing - but we might see a few on/offs today.

Six overs bowled so far. Alastair Cook the only man dismissed.

    Essex 10-1 v Hampshire

Tom Westley finds the boundary again off Mohammad Abbas, clipped away through square leg, but he is beaten by the next delivery.

Remember, Essex are 18 points behind leaders Surrey, so victory in this game by as close to maximum points as possible is essential.

  10. Postpublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Middx 12-0 v Warwicks

Decent start here from Middlesex in diffult conditions.

Mark Stoneman guides the final ball of Oliver Hannon-Dalby's first over down to the third man boundary, and Sam Robson then repeats the trick off Chris Rushworth's next ball.

The hosts will be pleased there's no third man in place - all but one of their first 11 runs come from that source.

Rushworth then ends the over by beating Stoneman's outside edge twice. A moral victory for the bowler.

  12. ouch!

Azad struck by Worrallpublished at 10:45 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Surrey v Northants 13-0

Kemar Roach bowls round the wicket and Hassan Azad works the ball off his hips for one.

Emilio Gay pulls the bat inside the line at the last moment against Kemar Roach, who continues to get lift and movement outside off.

Hassan Azad gets a brute of a ball from Dan Worrall, which lifts only just short of a length and strikes the opening batter on the shoulder.

    Ouch.

  13. Postpublished at 10:40 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Middx v Warwicks

Good news at Lord's where the rain shower has passed over and play begins.

Warwickshire to bowl first and it's Chris Rushworth who opens up against Mark Stoneman.

    Essex 4-1 v Hants

Tom Westley hits a boundaryImage source, Rex Features

Essex skipper Tom Westley comes out to bat earlier than he would have liked, needing only 15 runs to reach 1,000 for the season.

There are four of them as he punches his first ball, from Mohammad Abbas, straight back past the stumps.

    Confident start.

  15. Postpublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Surrey v Northants 10-0

Kemar Roach is getting the ball to bounce awkwardly outside the off stump, after a leg side ball at the start of the over is turned round the corner by Hassan Azad for a single.

Emilio Gay also gets off the mark with a single - off a no ball.

Dan Worrall will share the new ball on a blustery morning and gets some shape into the left-handed Emilio Gay.

Gay picks up the first boundary of the match with a deft nudge through to third man all along the ground for four runs.

  16. rain stops play

Rain stops playpublished at 10:35 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Middx v Warwicks

    Well, what do you know.

Just moments before play was due to start, the rain decides to make an appearance in St John's Wood.

There'll be a delayed start - but hopefully it's brief.

Mohammad Abbas takes a wicketImage source, Rex Features

    Well, well, well.....

Alastair Cook's innings lasts only three deliveries as Mo Abbas makes an immediate breakthrough for Hampshire in his opening over.

There is a brisk wind blowing across the ground, but that was a cracking delivery, just doing enough to beat Cook's forward prod and hit off stump.

  18. Play begins at the Ovalpublished at 10:31 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Surrey v Northants 0-0

Emilio Gay and Hassan Azad will open the batting for the visiting team in a game they have to win for any chance of Division One survival.

We might have some truncated sessions of play today, given the overcast conditions and high likelihood of afternoon rain.

The floodlights are on. We have four slips.

Kemar Roach will bowl to Hassan Azad.

  19. Postpublished at 10:31 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Essex 0-0 v Hants

    A prompt start at Chelmsford.

Keith Barker has the new ball for Hampshire, who are looking for a positive result following their defeat by Leicestershire in the One-Day Cup final.

Nick Browne is on strike, with the reassuring figure of Sir Alastair Cook leaning on his bat at the other end.

    Barker starts with a maiden.
