Once again, rain and bad light has conspired against us in the West Country, limiting play to a single session today.

A tussle for bonus points and a draw is the most likely outcome tomorrow.

Brilliant batting from Lewis Goldsworthy and Tom Kohler-Cadmore.

  2. 50 runs

for Brett D'Oliveirapublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Worcs 275-6 v Durham

Tip and run by Brett D'Oliveira and he jogs through for a single off Jayden Unadkat to reach 50 off only 58 balls.

A good, positive innings for his side, who are now half-way towards a second batting point.

Remember, though, that Adam Hose is unlikely to resume his innings today because of a wrist injury.

    Surrey 136-6 v Northants 347

Once again, the ground staff are hovering on the edge of the field in expectation of rain.

Ben Sanderson bowls outside off and Ben Foakes leaves.

He tightens his line and Foakes defends. Maiden over.

Northants captain Luke Procter comes on for Tom Taylor at the Vauxhall End, and Jamie Overton turns the ball away to backward square for two.

The fourth ball is pulled away through mid wicket for two more.

Two more runs through the same region and the runs are flowing again for Surrey.

    Middlesex 121 & 87-1 v Warwicks 315

We've got threatening-looking clouds settling over Lord's again as Middlesex chip away at this first-innings deficit of 194.

Jack Davies had an early scare when he tried to leave a delivery from Craig Miles and the ball deflected through the gully area, but he's since bedded down alongside Sam Robson.

There are 25 overs scheduled for tonight, but it's hard to envisage many of those seeing the light of day.

  5. Prest spoils Essex game planpublished at 16:54 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

Essex 447-9 dec v Hampshire 322-8 - rain stopped play

    Nick Gledhill
    BBC Essex

The heavy shower here has eased but it has further upset the Essex game plan after Hampshire avoided the follow on.

It has been a tremendous maiden Championship century from Tom Prest who finally converted his white-ball pedigree to the longer format.

No small credit goes to Keith Barker, 16 years Prest’s senior, who showed all his experience in a seventh-wicket partnership of 89 which took the initiative away from Essex.

Simon Harmer has 5-143 but his runs have come at four an over with Hampshire adopting a positive approach which they fine tuned after giving wickets away before lunch.

Essex need to wrap the innings up quickly when play resumes.

    Surrey 130-6 v Northants 347

Third slip moves to fourth slip for Tom Taylor, leaving a little gap.

Ben Foakes steers a short ball from Taylor between the slips and point for four runs, playing the ball almost right under his nose.

He gets a single to mid wicket and Jamie Overton drives with a big flourish of the bat through cover for four.

Surrey are bossing the session despite the score.

The 50 partnership for the seventh wicket comes in 67 balls.

WICKET Van Beek lbw de Leede 6published at 16:48 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Worcs 264-6 v Durham

Dutch international removes Dutch international at New Road as Bas de Leede strikes to secure Durham's second batting point.

As we said earlier, they will be Division Two champions if Worcestershire fail to reach 400 in 110 overs in this innings.

Brett D'Oliveira is 40 not out as he is joined by on-loan Ben Allison.

    Surrey 120-6 v Northants 347

This is compelling viewing. Plenty of positive intent from both sides.

It's now raining at Chelmsford and there has to be a worry that the rain may move further south to the Oval and Lord's.

Ben Sanderson is bowling a good line here as Ben Foakes defends into the off side.

A big shout for caught behind off the last ball, but it has missed the edge by a whisker as the ball moves a fraction off the straight.

    Maiden over.

  9. Guest equals Derbyshire club recordpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Derbyshire v Sussex 100

    Brooke GuestImage source, Getty Images

Brooke Guest took six catches in an innings against Yorkshire earlier this month and today he's gone one better to equal the Derbyshire wicketkeeping record held by Bob Taylor and Harvey Hosein.

Fynn Hudson-Prentice, on 23, edges to him from the bowling of Zak Chappell and Sussex are all out for 100 after no play was possible on the first two days.

Chappell finishes with 4-39 and Sam Conners took 4-32.

    Surrey 120-6 v Northants 347

The nose of a helicopter is very audible over the commentary mic at the Oval.

Jamie Overton is in the mood here. He advances down the ground to Ben Sanderson and launches the bowler over his head and down the ground for four.

He swings and misses the last ball, which strikes him on the thigh pad.

Ben Foakes gets a single to square leg off Taylor- and Overton continues the counterattack, pulling a short ball behind square for two.

The last ball spits up off a length and Overton takes his bottom hand off the bat.

He plays and misses the last ball, aiming a flick to leg.

WICKET Stoneman c Burgess b Miles 32published at 16:36 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Middlesex 121 & 78-1 v Warwickshire 315

That's an inspired change by Warwickshire!

Craig Miles comes on for his first ball of the innings and immediately makes the breakthrough as Mark Stoneman is caught behind off an inside edge.

In comes Jack Davies, who was dismissed by Miles in the first innings. Middlesex still trail by 116 but that opening stand between Stoneman and Sam Robson has given them something to build on.

  12. Division Two updatepublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

Play has resumed at Derby and Fynn Hudson-Prentice has hit two fours off Zak Chappell to take Sussex to 100-8 at the end of the 35th over.

They are still off at Leicester following a rain shower, but the umpires hope to re-start at 4.45, with Yorkshire 24-0, 54 in arrears.

  13. Postpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Surrey 113-6 v Northants 347

Great shot from Ben Foakes, who tucks in to a slightly over pitched ball from Tom Taylor and drives it down the ground for four.

The next ball jags back off the seam and keeps low but Foakes is able to leave it.

Four more runs to end the over, driven through long on.

    Lovely shot.

WICKET Kashif c Jones b de Leede 22published at 16:30 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Worcs 252-5 v Durham

Kashif Ali dangles his bat at a ball from Bas de Leede which leaves him off the pitch and is caught low down at first slip by Michael Jones.

He is replaced by Logan van Beek, who steers his first ball through backward point for four to earn Worcestershire a first batting point.

  15. Postpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Surrey 105-6 v Northants 347

That's a very short ball from Tom Taylor and keeper Lewis McManus is it full stretch leaping in the air and getting a glove to it.

That's a no ball, taking Surrey to 100 in the 42nd over.

Frustration for Ben Sanderson, who finds the edge of Jamie Overton's bat and the ball bounces in front of Emilio Gay at second slip.

It runs away between his legs and down to third man for four runs.

Overton plays around the fourth ball and is struck on the pad but that's too leg side for an LBW. A bit of bat on that, too.

Another hit on the pad but this time Jamie Overton is well forward.

    Not out.

    Middlesex 121 & 70-0 v Warwicks 315

Having said that Warwickshire were restricting the Middlesex scoring rate, Mark Stoneman has just cast off the shackles by dispatching Olly Hannon-Dalby for three boundaries in a over.

Stoneman has almost caught up opening partner Sam Robson now - he's on 32 to the right-hander's 35. Good start from Middlesex, but they still trail by 124.

  17. Bad light stops play at Chelmsfordpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Essex 447-9 dec v Hants 322-8

Four balls into a Sam Cook over, the umpires decide to take the teams off. The BBC radio commentators are, though, confident that there will be more play later. Let's hope so.

Tom Prest is 102 not out and Kyle Abbott has eight. Hampshire trail by 125 runs.

  18. Postpublished at 16:23 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Surrey 99-6 v Northants 347

There's still bounce and seam movement for the Northants attack.

Tom Taylor will bowl the first over from the Vauxhall End.

His first ball is driven hard by Jamie Overton, who gets a thick edge wide of third slip for four.

Ben Sanderson had four slips at the other end. Three here.

Overton gets one more run with a slap through to deep cover.

    Ben Foakes defends.

  19. Postpublished at 16:20 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Essex 447-9 dec v Hampshire 320-8

The umpires are getting increasingly concerned about the light.

A single by Tom Prest is the only addition from Simon Harmer's 36th over.

  20. Postpublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Surrey 94-6 v Northants 347

In theory we have 34 overs before stumps tonight.

But the light and possibly rain might intervene. Again.

Jamie Overton guides Sanderson safely to backward point for the first two runs of the session.

Overton clips the fourth ball off his hip for one.

Ben Foakes is beaten outside off but survives the over.
