  1. Day Three begins at Tauntonpublished at 10:29 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Somerset 214-2 v Kent

Day three in name only. Day two was after all entirely lost to rain.

Lewis Goldsworthy has made the most of his recall to the Somerset XI for his first Championship game of the season and resumes on 70 not out.

    Andy Umeed has four.

Daniel Bell-Drummond will complete his over from the Trescothick Pavilion End, bowling to Goldsworthy.

    Four balls left.

Kent need early wickets to begin their climb out of the relegation zone and will hope Warwickshire continue to dominate Middlesex at Lord's.

Just two points separate them, with Middlesex in eighth place and Kent in ninth.

Hampshire coach Adi Birrell acknowledged the likely threat posed by Essex spinner Simon Harmer after rain forced a premature end to day two at Chelmsford.

Harmer - who hit 62 before Essex declared - took 15 wickets in the corresponding game last season and will be bowling on a previously-used pitch.

“We’ve got 20 wickets and 200 overs so we’re looking at our batters to bat a long period of time. The pitch is playing well, although obviously it has been made for Harmer," said Birrell.

“It isn’t spinning as much as the one we played on last year. But Harmer is a good bowler and going to be a factor, plus they have three good seamers who can switch around."

  5. Briggs happy with 'backs to the wall' inningspublished at 10:18 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

Warwickshire need to extend their total as far as possible to maximise their advantage in the game, according to spinner Danny Briggs.

He contributed an unbeaten 71 against Middlesex as he and Will Rhodes - who will resume on 96 - put on 133 for the seventh wicket.

"I like coming in getting some runs when it is backs to the wall. I suppose it’s a good trait to have. If I could do it more consistently it would be nice," he said.

"It is going to be important we extend this lead because batting last may be more of a challenge come the back end of the game.”

  6. Nair has 'a real calmness' - Sadlerpublished at 10:15 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

Surrey v Northants 351-9 (play due to start at 10:00)

Northamptonshire head coach John Sadler hailed a "magnificent hundred" by Karun Nair as they held up Division One leaders Surrey on day two at The Oval.

Nair reached 144 not out in only his second game for the county before rain ended play, an innings including two sixes and 22 fours, and shared a stand of 114 with Tom Taylor.

"He’s got a great temperament and there is a real calmness about him. That has fed into the rest of the group and you can already feel his influence in the dressing room, " said Sadler.

“Tom Taylor also played a fine innings... and their partnership really gathered momentum and put pressure back on Surrey.”

  7. Play to resume on time at Tauntonpublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Somerset 214-2 v Kent

Good news for Kent and Somerset after a miserable day washed out any chance of play yesterday.

We're aiming for 104.4 overs (as Daniel Bell-Drummond was two balls into his over before play was curtailed on Tuesday) and lunch at the later time of 12.40.

Tea is currently scheduled for 3.30.

  8. Notts win toss and bowl at Old Traffordpublished at 10:12 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

Believe it or not, that is the sight of the Old Trafford pitch with covers off and, after two days lost to rain, we're all set for some cricket from 10.30.

Visitors Nottinghamshire, who could still use a few points to be absolutely certain of rubber-stamping their top-flight status for next season, have won the toss and will bowl first.

Notts are unchanged from the side that came away from Canterbury with a draw last week, while Lancashire make four changes to the side that drew here with Middlesex.

Matthew Hurst makes his first-class debut while Steven Croft and the two Jacks, Blatherwick and Morley, also come into the line-up.

  9. Rain pushes Durham closer to titlepublished at 10:12 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

Worcestershire 104-1 v Durham (play due to start at 10:30)

The weather may have prevented any play on day two at New Road but it's unlikely there were many moans in the Durham dressing room.

They need a maximum of five points from this game to secure the Division Two title - and a draw will be enough.

Worcestershire are in a strong position to clinch the second promotion spot, but are aware that rivals Leicestershire are in a handy position against Yorkshire, even though they too were washed out yesterday.

Opener Jake Libby will resume on 46 not out, having passed 1,000 runs for the season during the first day's play.

  10. Play at Derby - at lastpublished at 10:08 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

Derbyshire v Sussex (play due to start at 10:30)

Following two days when rain was the only winner, we are going to have some cricket at the Incora County Ground.

Derbyshire have won the toss and chosen to bowl first, with Zak Chappell replacing Mark Watt in their side.

Sussex will be without suspended Cheteshwar Pujara, along with Tom Haines and Jack Carson, left out for disciplinary reasons.

  11. Weather outlookpublished at 10:05 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

"After torrential rain for many of you yesterday, a brighter day for most today. Some heavy showers still possible though."

Thank you, BBC Weather, for lifting our cricketing spirits by offering the prospect of more play than we saw on day two.

Having had a quick count up, we can tell you that 118.5 overs were bowled on day two of the latest County Championship games because of rain - and there was no play at all at five of the eight grounds.

Ever the optimists, we are hopeful of a better day today as the teams continue to try and to resolve some of the season's outstanding issues - divisional titles, promotion, relegation.

Welcome to our coverage. Play is due to begin at 10:30.
