WICKET Clark c McManus b Sanderson 9published at 14:02 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Surrey 79-6 v Northants 357

    Second bowling point for Northants.

Jordan Clark is forward to Ben Sanderson and gets the faintest of edges through to the keeper, Lewis McManus.

Jamie Overton is in the middle a bit earlier than he might have expected.

    Surrey 79-5 v Northants 357

"Northamptonshire are belying their position at the bottom of the table" - says BBC London Cricket Commentator Mark Church.

We have a pause in play as the umpires check the state of the ball.

I doubt Northants would want to change it - and they don't have to.

Shot! Ben Sanderson bangs the ball halfway down the track and Jordan Clark pulls it over square leg for six!

New balls please? No, they've recovered it.

The lights are coming on. Please, no...

Ben Brown comes down the pitch to Simon Harmer, turning the first ball of a new over into a half volley, and hits it over wide mid-on for four to bring up a 50 partnership with Tom Prest.

But it is a defensive shot which proves his undoing as he pops up a bat-pad catch. Harmer has 4-88 as Keith Barker comes out to bat.

    Surrey 73-5 v Northants 357

Northants are very much in the ascendency here, despite the mountain they have to climb to stay in Division One.

They need wins over the top two teams in the division and defeats for Middlesex and Kent, both of whom are contenders for the second relegation spot.

Ben Foakes is forward to Sanderson, driving into cover but not past the in field.

Jordan Clark nudges a ball from Jack White to third man for one.

Two more runs for Ben Foakes, tucked away on to the leg side.

Sadly, the ground staff are hovering on the edge of the field as the dark clouds gather...

  6. Division Two updatepublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

Two fours in the same Jordan Thompson over for Leicestershire's Tom Scriven - a cover drive and a tick edge past the slips.

He is 17 not out and the Foxes are 137-6 after 37 overs and just 19 runs short of a first innings lead.

Still no play at Worcester or Derby because of rain.

  7. wicket

WICKET Bell b Fernando 26published at 13:53 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Lancs 132-4 v Notts

Asitha Fernando is back for another spell - and he's repeated exactly what he achieved in his previous one.

George Bell goes to drive a full-pitched delivery, which looked to be swinging in a tad and misses it, with the stumps splayed behind him.

Reminiscent of the House of Hanover, one George is followed by another - Balderson replacing Bell in the middle.

Hampshire continue to make regular use of the horizontal - or near horizontal - bat to try and combat Simon Harmer.

Tom Prest top edges an attempted sweep at the end of his 21st over but the ball drops into a gap and he moves to 34 not out.

    Quote Message

You get the feeling that Harmer is getting the wicket to help him a bit more than it was in his first half a dozen overs. Sweeps are getting more precarious."

    Surrey 69-5 v Northants 357

    Who expected this today?

The Division One leaders have lost half their batting to Northants, who are at the other end of the table, in 32 overs.

Jack White is over the wicket and gets another ball to jag back off the seam.

This one hits Jordan Clark on the back leg.

Jordan Clark picks up a single, pushing the fifth ball out into the off side.

Two very eye-pleasing boundary strokes by Sam Robson in successive balls, driving Olly Hannon-Dalby past mid-off and then turning the next one neatly between two fielders on the leg side to bring him four more.

Robson has made 25, with Mark Stoneman on 13 as Middlesex battle to claw back this sizeable deficit of 194.

Rain stops play at Derbypublished at 13:46 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Derbyshire v Sussex 90-8

No play was possible on the first two days and the rain has returned in Derby. Only three overs have been bowled since lunch with Sussex adding 13 to their total without loss.

  12. Postpublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Surrey 67-5 v Northants 357

Jack White comes close to two wickets in two balls as Jordan Clark is forward, missing the ball and he's struck on the pad.

Close but maybe just missing leg.

Clark keeps the strike with a single off the last ball of the over.

A miserly over from Ben Sanderson, full and on the line of off stump.

    Maiden over.

  13. Postpublished at 13:44 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Essex 447-9 dec v Hants 180-5

Simon Harmer trundles in again and Tom Prest pulls to mid-wicket for four. A risky shot as it wasn't really short enough, but he made a decent contact.

Prest has 33 not out and a run per ball, with Ben Brown on eight.

  15. wicket

WICKET Steel b White 0published at 13:40 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Surrey 66-5 v Northants 357

Ben Sanderson delivers another no ball from the Pavilion End.

    A good over after that.

A tidy line and length with just one single off the bat.

Jack White bowls a very full length, inviting the drive and Ben Foakes pushes the ball along the ground to mid off for no run.

The third ball is turned away to long leg for one.

Out! Cameron Steel pushes forward, misses the ball and loses his leg stump, which is ripped out of the ground.

Late seam movement. Peach of a delivery.

The new batter is Jordan Clark.

  16. Postpublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Essex 447-9 dec v Hants 173-5

Simon Harmer floats one up outside off stump, looking for turn, and Ben Brown reverse sweeps for four, but fails to make proper contact with another.

How the game has changed. That's probably more reverse sweeps in this over than the likes of Roy Marshall, Barry Richards and Mark Nicholas attempted in their careers.

  17. Division Two updatepublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

Harry Swindells is warming to his task at Grace Road with a couple of fours in the latest George Hill over.

Leicestershire's One-Day Cup hero is 17 not out and they are 110-6 after 31 overs, replying to Yorkshire's 155 all out.

There was a slightly delayed resumption at Derby and Sussex are 81-8 in the 32nd over with Fynn Hudson-Prentice 12 not out - only the third batter to reach double figures in this innings.

  18. wicket

WICKET Sibley LBW b White 32published at 13:31 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Surrey 62-4 v Northants 357

Ben Sanderson begins the session with a no ball and his second delivery is tucked away by Ben Foakes off his hips and behind square leg for four.

Sanderson shifts his line to outside off stump and Foakes leaves.

The clouds are getting darker as Jack White bowls from the Vauxhall End.

He strikes with his second ball! Not for the first time in this innings, Dom Sibley plays around a straightening ball and is struck on the pad.

On the upper part of the knee roll, in front of middle and leg.

The new batter is Cameron Steel.

BBC Radio London's Mark Church said:

"It looked fairly adjacent from here. Now life does get tricky for Surrey."

  19. Postpublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Essex 447-9 dec v Hants 168-5

Tom Prest certainly doesn't lack confidence.

Two reverse sweeps disappear for four off Simon Harmer, as well as an orthodox forcing shot off the back foot.

He is 28 not out and Ben Brown has one to his name.

  20. Postpublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Lancs 110-3 v Notts

George Bell slashes outside off stump at Brett Hutton in the first over after lunch and earns himself four runs - the second slightly streaky boundary of his innings so far.

Bell has advanced to 14 not out, while Steven Croft is firmly embedded at the other end, with just two runs to show for his 45-minute stay at the crease so far.
