I still think Australia are in the ascendency, this partnership for India is so crucial to give themselves a chance to think about winning but if Australia get an early wicket they can win.

India have been behind most of this game after conceding 469 in the first innings, so you have to credit them for still being in it going into the final day.

It is still Australia's to lose, but what a contest it has been.

There was some surprise that Australia batted for as long as they did, setting India a mammoth 444.

But Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma started beautifully, as did Cheteshwar Pujara, before they became India's three wickets to fall.

Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey: "We've got the runs on the board that we wanted. It would definitely have been nice to have taken a couple of more wickets but they played well, so we've got to come back and push on tomorrow."

On Cameron Green's catch: "It looked good from where I was. I thought he caught it fair and square. He was pretty happy with it, so yeah, the right decision was made."

On India's opening stand: "No, it's never nice seeing our bowlers go at sixes for that amount of time but we pegged them bag after that and it's going to be a case of being patient tomorrow, keep putting the ball in the right area to take those seven wickets."

On the pitch: "They've got two class players in at the moment so we've got to stay patient. It is still doing bits and pieces, but hopefully those chances will come."

  5. 'I knew I caught it straight away'published at 18:10 British Summer Time 10 June 2023

Australia all-rounder Cameron Green, speaking to Test Match Special: "Obviously we are quite a few runs ahead and are in a good position.

"I am not sure the pitch has [flattened out], the ball has just older, softer. It was tough work, one or two wickets and we probably think we are through.

"We always knew Virat Kohli, and Ajinkya Rahane batted beautifully in the first innings. We will hope to fight through and take it early tomorrow.

"I knew I caught it straight away. I know it looks a bit weird but I knew straight away I caught it. The openers got off to a flying start so it is always nice to get that first one to settle our nerves."

These two have both got to score hundreds for India to win.

Today's had a bit of everything.

We've had runs, wickets, and a little bit of controversy to top it off.

What does day five have in store?

    Target 444

    And that is that!

Virat Kohli goes to stumps unbeaten on 44, and Rahane on 20.

They are still a long way behind - 280 to be precise - but they're still in it.

And the main thing? Kohli is still there.

That was good diving effort from Steve Smith.

  11. Ind 164-3published at 39.4 overs

A huge appeal for a catch at short leg - but it's straight off the pad.

There was momentary silence around The Oval, but Kohli is unfazed.

  12. Ind 164-3published at 39.1 overs

Block out the last over of the day, you say?

Not Virat Kohli. A fine glance for four.

  13. Ind 160-3published at 39 overs

    Target 444

Eight overs remain in the day, but we'll only get one of them.

Yet another Pat Cummins no-ball isn't helping the over rate.

    Vintage Virat.

  15. Ind 158-3published at 38 overs

Ooh! A couple of close calls in the over as Rahane is pinned on the pad by Lyon, but it's adjudged to be going down leg.

He then drives loosely, with some of the fielders thinking it's a drop from Alex Carey - but there's no edge.

    A tense five minutes awaits!

  16. Ind 158-3published at 37 overs

    Target 444

Five wides from Pat Cummins will help India's cause.

Another no-ball helps it even more.

Every over in the legs of Australia's bowlers is good news for England.

Virat Kohli, as he often does, gives India supporters some hope.

  18. Ind 151-3published at 36 overs

Captain Rohit Sharma applauds those two Virat Kohli boundaries from the balcony, sporting a rather distinctive pair of neon green sliders.

    Each to their own.

I've been impressed by India, there's not a frivolous nature to their batting and they are making Australia work as hard as they can. They are just about in the game.

  20. Ind 150-3published at 35 overs

    Target 444

Right on cue, Kohli whips one effortlessly through mid-wicket for four beautifully-timed runs.

And follows it with another boundary, straighter this time, past mid-off.

    Doesn't even bother to run.
