More from Kate Cross speaking to BBC Sport: "The support was amazing. It feels like we have 12th person behind us, the noise crept up, it's been amazing and we have captured the imagination of everyone and we're desperate for more people to be part of this.

"I don't think we're favourites because Australia are still the best side in the world and what we have done well is concentrate on ourselves, and have tried to take away the aura of that team. Heather Knight said to me 'just think it's an off-spinner bowling at you, not Ash Gardner'.

"Our turning point was Edgbaston was when we didn't play good cricket and lost and Jon Lewis said to us that we are so close to beating this team.

"We still have two big games to come. I just thought I'd channel my inner Chris Woakes and show number 10s can bat."

  3. 'I went out there thinking I don't want to lose'published at 20:23 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

England bowler Kate Cross speaking to BBC Sport: "I've never been out there to win the game with the bat, it helped having Heather Knight out there, she just said to do it in increments of 10 and then we won.

"It's been a weird day, disappointing not to impact the game as much with the ball and not bowling how I should have been, but to be out there with the captain and get the winning runs was great.

"I wasn't as nervous as I was sat in the dug out, Heather Knight was calm and positive, then she said the ramp is on and I did it.

"Last night I had the worst night and wasn't really high on confidence but I went out there thinking I don't want to lose."

  4. 'We can get better'published at 20:20 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

More from England captain Heather Knight to BBC TMS: "We are just trying to put on as much pressure and play as brave cricket as possible. We showed we are able to adapt quite a lot as well.

"The fact we got that gritty win is really pleasing but we can get better. It was a poor fielding performance from us in the first 10 overs. We weren't quite right and gave them too many four balls.

"Drops happen sometimes. They can be a bit contagious. In another game we want to take those and it would have made it easier.

"I've been quite nervous, but I am enjoying the series. I made a conscious decision to stay in the moment and not look too far ahead. The crowds have been unbelievable.

"It is my home ground today and that really made a difference. The trumpeter was like Where's Wally, he was all over the place. I've just been trying to embrace the moment because there's times when we haven't played in front of a lot to people."

Shaun Good: Heather Knight with a real captain's knock, Kate Cross with nerves of steal and England dragging the series back from 0-6 to 6-6. How good was that game?!

Dave Price: It's a brilliant ashes summer. I'm loving that the men's and women's series are being played in parallel too. Adds to the drama!

Issy Savin de Larclause: This WAshes is so absorbing, what a game this evening.

  6. 'The momentum is really with us'published at 20:15 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

England captain Heather Knight to BBC TMS: "An amazing atmosphere. I had to stop myself from singing along and staying calm.

"Credit to both sides. I wouldn't mind a slightly less close one, but it was an awesome game and I was calmer out in the middle where I could influence the game rather than in the dressing room.

"Kate hasn't had the best game so to come back and win the game for us is outstanding.

"It feels like the momentum is really with us. I was trying to stay calm, but the way we took on the power play, Tammy and Alice were outstanding. We task those girls with getting the bulk of the runs and that made it easier for us taking on the spinners in the middle."

On Alice Capsey's bowling: "She was awesome. The pitch was hard to play against if you put it in the right areas. I kept thinking of taking her off, but she wouldn't go for many so I kept her on. She hasn't bowled much in ODI cricket but she just rolled with it. Lauren Bell deserves a mention as well. It wasn't an easy place to bowl with the win, so she was great."

Kate Cross? More like Cross Buttler!! How is she a no10??

    Nick, London

Masterful situational batting from Knight & absolute brilliance from Cross!

To win the Ashes from 6-0 down would be the equivalent of the men coming from 2-0 behind to win. Brilliant result!!

  9. 'England have matched us'published at 20:07 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

Australia's batter Phoebe Litchfield speaking to BBC Sport: "It's disappointing, but what a great match and atmosphere to be part of. We've got a few things to work on with batting and bowling but it makes this series interesting now and we're looking forward to it.

"This is uncharted territory for this amazing side, we still wanted to be attacking and didn't want to change too much.

"England have matched us and we have a few things to work on.

"I found out yesterday that I would be opening the batting with Healy, it was really exciting and it was the first time I have batted with her."

  10. 'Pure joy at the end'published at 20:05 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

Player of the match, England captain Heather Knight: "It was hard work out there. It was tough, I don't think I middled one until I got to 30.

"I thought it was starting to slip away towards the end when we kept losing wickets and the crowd really kept us in it. Kate Cross, what a hero. She was really nervous. But we just broke it down in 10s and to beat a good side, I still think we can be a lot better, I don't think we've been our best.

"The fight in this side is just remarkable."

On her own innings: "I was trying to keep it in, stay in my bubble and keep really calm. It was a tricky wicket, I had to have a simple plan, find a way of scoring. It was difficult to be fluent and rotate the ball around so it pure relief at the end. We kept losing wickets and making it hard for ourselves so just really pleased.

"I would not have enjoyed watching that game at all so I was glad to be out there and finishing it off."

On Kate Cross' scoop: "It's her best shot (scoop), fine leg was up, I had a chat with her and she executed it brilliantly. That took the pressure off. We kept saying to each other, 'Lauren Bell is in next!' Poor Lauren was very nervous. Really pleased for Kate, she has probably not had the best day but is one of the most resilient people that I know so to see her do that was outstanding.

"There's a lot we can do better. First 10-15 overs we were a little bit off it. It was easiest time to score but if you bowled straight you could make it hard for the batters with variations.

"It was not our best day in the field, we still have more in there, but we're still winning and keeping the momentum going. The way Tammy and Alice batted was a clear tactic from us to take the powerplay on because it's the easiest time to score and they did it brilliantly.

"We had lots of people standing up again which is really pleasing."

"We gained real momentum, credit to both teams, it's been an awesome series. I wouldn't mind a few less nail biters to be sure.

On winning runs: "I wanted to be there at the end. It was pure joy at the end. My home club, lots of family and friends there and I didn't want to go back to the dressing room with a few runs left.

"We've kept growing as a team but there's still a long way to go in terms of our growth. We've shown clarity under pressure and stayed calm in the big moments, I think we're really growing as a side. We know Australia are a brilliant team and we have to go again at Southampton, but the support from the side was great. I had to try and not get too excited when they were singing 'Hey Jude' at the end and try to stay calm. It's been awesome and the support has really helped up, hopefully it continues."

  11. 'Belief has always been there, now it's showing'published at 20:03 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

England's batter Tammy Beaumont speaking to BBC Sport: "We're playing some good cricket at the moment, there's some areas we could have improved on. It's great to get three wins on the bounce. We have the momentum at the minute and are trying to put them under pressure.

"I'm a terrible watcher, I'm the worst person to sit next to in the dressing room, Kate Cross wasn't nervous, she showed everyone how to bat out there.

"Kate Cross isn't really a number 10. She bats at six or seven in the domestic game and we're very lucky to have batting depth, she has a lot of technique on a wicket where you had to play straight shots.

"I think Australia have been a bit inconsistent with the ball, I think they had 21 extras in a T20, and maybe they have been more wayward than they would like to be.

"I think the girls have got the belief from the T20 wins. The girls are just riding the wave, just because it's 50 overs it doesn't mean our intent changes. After the T20 wins, Heather Knight said that's one off the back to show we can do it. I do think Jon Lewis speaks well but hasn't had to get too many messages to us because the belief has always been there and now it's showing.

"We could've won that convincingly at one point, it's about concentrating on us.

"Lewis said it's not about being perfect, it's about being less imperfect than the opposition and there's many areas we can improve on."

  12. 'The Ashes are on the line'published at 19:59 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

Australia captain Alyssa Healy: "It went down to the wire. We probably got outplayed a little bit at the end but I thought we fought really well to keep ourselves in the fixture. A good game of cricket all round.

"We were probably 20 runs short with the bat and bowled 20 odd extras, that's 40 runs. Their spinners also did an outstanding job on that wicket to keep the runs down. So we'll just look at areas we can improve on for the next time. It seemed like they couldn't get going at points either and the change of pace in the wickets and spin came into play at the back end, so look I still think we could've found 20 runs out there and that would keep us in the fixture.

"The Ashes are on the line now for proper, so if that does not galvanise the group I don't know what will. We haven't been in this position a lot and we either see it as an opportunity to learn and grow or an opportunity to throw excuses out there, it's up to us to turn it around for the next two games and the Ashes trophy is well and truly on the line.

"We showed it in patches to take it as deep as we did, it's still there. We just have to be better and sharper in certain areas to get us over the line and that's what we're going to have to find over the next few days."
