All the tailender has to do here is get Daniel Sams back on strike. No other job.

Horrible, horrible shot across the line by Shane Snater but Somerset won't mind. It's all on Daniel Sams now really. Somerset need just two wickets to win the title.

  3. Postpublished at 16 overs

    Essex 108-8 (target 146)

Ish Sodhi has another over to come. He has 2-12 from his three so far.

Somerset have to be strong favourites now.

Daniel Sams has 29. Aaron Beard has one but will be on strike to Lewis Gregory...

... as the rain begins to fall....

Do we really need more drama and peril?

  4. Harmer not the charmer this timepublished at 21:45 British Summer Time 15 July 2023

    Somerset 145, Essex 108-8

    Ged Scott
    BBC Sport at Edgbaston

Simon 'the charmer' Harmer hit the winning runs in the semi - and in the final here at Edgbaston when Essex won this trophy in 2019.

    Not this time though.

All may depend now on Daniel Sams. But you sense that the mood in the crowd is that, with Harmer gone and now Shane Snater too, the crowd have made up their mind.

This is Somerset's game to lose now. And Ish Sodhi has become the charmer.

    Well, well, well.

Flat, quick, swing and a miss and Shane Snater - the hero with the ball - is on his way for a duck.

    Aaron Beard joins Daniel Sams.

  6. Postpublished at 15 overs

    Essex 106-7 (target 146)

40 needed from 30 balls for Essex.

Daniel Sams is going to have to put Essex on his shoulders here, you'd imagine. He has 28 from 18 balls.

BIG appeal for lbw from Lewis Gregory against Snater....

Drfting down leg. No dice. Umpire Martin Saggers had the call right.

    Nick Gledhill

That's a real nuisance from an Essex point-of-view because that pairing were looking pretty comfortable in bat. Big wicket for Somerset.

An edge behind by Simon Harmer and Tom Banton does the rest. Lewis Gregory has a second scalp and do we have a twist?

Shane Snater is the new man.

  10. Postpublished at 14.1 overs

    Essex105-6 (target 146)

A rare somerset misfield - Ben Green the culprit at backward point - has given Daniel Sams the four he didnt get from the first ball of the last over. That would probably have just been a single.

Fine margins in a tight final like this.

  11. Postpublished at 14 overs

    Essex 104-6 (target 146)

Essex are finally batting sensibly, as they should. Picking up the ones and twos when they are there and not trying to force anything.

Five off the over from Ish Sodhi.

45 needed from 36 balls. More than doable... if these two stay together!

You have to think these two need to take it down to 25 or 20 to win with what's to come.

  13. Postpublished at 13.1 overs

    Essex 98-6 (target 146)

Sean Dickson has produced one of the best diving stops on the rope you'll see. He's robbed Daniel Sams of two runs there. What a day he's had.

  14. Postpublished at 13 overs

    Essex 96-6 (target 146)

It feels a little like this game is being played-out in slow-motion.

Essex are so tantalisingly close, a couple of lusty blows would get them all-but there, but Somerset will feel they are one more wicket away from a potentially very healthy position too.

12 off that over means only 50 needed from 42 balls.

What a powerful flick of the wrist from Daniel Sams, he swats Kasey Aldridge a dozen rows back into the stand over mid-wicket.

Ish Sodhi, with all his international experience, breaks the partnership for 25.

Will Smeed produces a fine diving stop to deny Simon Harmer a four and save two runs after he pulled Sodhi away towarss fine leg.

Five off the over - asking rate inches towards eight.

Massive wicket! Paul Walter was batting so sensibly, so well, but he had a rush of blood and looked to launch it out of the park and he failed. Somerset needed that.

That's a dot. Paul Walter clearly got bored and tried an almighty slog towards the short boundary, only to miss the straight ball which subsequently clattered his timbers.

He goes for 26 from 24.

    Simon Harmer joins Daniel Sams.

In his fourth match of the summer Kasey Aldridge bowls for the first time and goes for another six singles.

Dots incresingly hard to come by for Somerset.

Ish Sodhi is coming on to bowl... can the Kiwi spinner find any?
