    Jason: Grassed for me.

Theo: His fingers are pretty clearly under the ball… that’s a poor decision form the 3rd umpire.

    Contrasting opinions...

So can Lewis Gregory take advantage?

He slices this final ball of the over inside third man and it races way for four.

  3. Not outpublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 15 July 2023

But this time it's not out!

    And Lewis Gregory survives!

    A huge life.

Live, it certainly looked out but on the replays you could argue it either way.

Lewis Gregory isn't going just yet. The umpires are having a word with each other. Tension.

  5. Umpire reviewpublished at 19:48 British Summer Time 15 July 2023

Is Lewis Gregory caught first ball?

Popped it back to Matt Critchley who may have dived forward to take the catch.

    Ooo this is tight!

Critchley looks to have got his fingers under the ball but the ball also looks to have hit the turf.

This is Steve Smith at Lord's all over again.

Somerset have some work to do. But it's a tough, slow wicket and we haven't really seen anyone hitting the long ball today. When they try to they just whack the ball high into the air and someone gets underneath it and it's caught out.

A second over for Paul Walter.

Tom Abell has a couple of hacks at him - the first flies to third man for a single, the second is mistimed to long-on.

But the third is skied to mid-on!

Well taken by Aaron Beard shuffling back.

Abell runs out of patience and perishes.

    Somerset 64-3 (10 overs) v Essex

    Ged Scott
    BBC Sport at Edgbaston

Edgbaston still looks about two thirds full as the day's entertainment draws to a hopefully exciting conclusion - and in the continued hope that the long threatened rain stays off.

Looking over at where the weather comes from, it still a bit grey, cloudy and overcast - and the Edgbaston lights are now truly starting to have an effect.

Past Edgbaston final experience must come into effect at some point.

Essex have four of the side who won here in 2019, Simon Harmer, in his first year as T20 skipper back then, Dan Lawrence, Sam Cook and Aaron Beard.

But Somerset have six players, skipper Lewis Gregory, red-ball captain Tom Abell, Will Smeed, Tom Banton, Benny Green and Craig Overton, who were the beaten finalists here two years ago. And Matt Henry has three times been a finalist back home in New Zealand.

So pleased a Hundred team hasn't won the T20 this year, There is so much more to cricket than Test grounds, and first-class for that matter.

    Rob

How come they can get the covers off and players back on within about 20 minutes of rain stopping on Finals Day? Yet in a Test match it seems to take an age to inspect/get covers off and decide on a start time...

    Matt, Portsmouth.

Shane Snater back for a third over.

A sweet cover drive from Tom Abell but just a single to deep cover.

The Dutchman very miserly once more. Just four from.

    Halfway in the Somerset innings.

They know it won't take too many to be competitive in these conditions.

    Paul Walter introduced. Left-arm round.

He goes into the pitch and it's been pretty difficult to time anything from back of a length all day.

Tom Abell drives wide of deep cover and runs a sharp second.

But another good over for Essex.

    Somerset 55-3 v Essex

    Glenn Maxwell
Australia all-rounder on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

A huge wicket for Matt Critchley. A slider out of the front of the hand and that's a bit of a nothing shot from Tom Kohler-Cadmore. The best he was going to get out of that was a single.

All Critchley has done is bowl fast, skiddy leg-breaks at the top of the stumps, which is exactly what Essex need. He's forced Somerset to take the risk, and Kohler-Cadmore has gone with a pretty tame cut shot.

Matt Critchley what a day he is having. This is better now from Essex after a decent start from Somerset.

Matt Critchley's leggers into the attack.

Tight stuff, changing his pace, using his googly.

And the last ball of the over skids on and Tom Kohler-Cadmore is caught in the crease trying to cut a ball too full to do so and gets beaten.

  15. 'Abell needs to bat deep here'published at 19:32 British Summer Time 15 July 2023

    Somerset 52-2 v Essex

    Glenn Maxwell
Australia all-rounder on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

It's the trend of the day, as soon as you get a little bit of momentum in a partnership, a wicket falls. Tom Banton was just finding that rhythm but now he has to go.

In comes Tom Abell, who is a beautiful player. You need him to bat deep into the innings. We haven't seen anyone do that today.

If Somerset can just bat around him and take the pressure off him they can still post a really good total here.

With his ninth ball, Shane Snater finally concedes a run and Tom Abell is away first delivery.

Tom Kholer-Cadmore back on strike and he glances a slightly wide ball between backward point and short-third man for four. Delicate touch.

But it's another superb over from Snater and Essex on top here.

Final over of the powerplay and Daniel Sams to bowl it.

Plenty of change-ups and just four singles to begin the over.

Single, dot to close it out and that is a fine end to the powerplay for Essex.

It's a decent start from Somerset who will be happy to have batted first on this wicket because I think it will deteriorate some more before this is over. They are playing smart cricket at the moment.
