Scotland beat the West Indies by seven wickets

What a day of cricket. Scotland's World Cup hopes are still alive, they've beaten the West Indies for the very first time in an ODI, and they did it style.

Skittling the top order to 81-6 was incredible. Brandon McMullen and Chris Sole looked unplayable as they tore through the West Indian batters.

Chris McBride's first ball wicket made us nervous for about five minutes, before McMullen showed us - again - what a fine cricketer he is, with a score of 69. Credit must also go to Matthew Cross, Scotland's other opener, with a score of 74 not out.

A historic day in which Scotland finally felled a cricketing colossus. Can they do it again on Tuesday? Join us and find out.

  2. Berrington lauds superstar McMullenpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

Scotland beat the West Indies by seven wickets

Scotland's winning captain Richie Berrington tells Sky Sports: "Playing to get into a World Cup is as big as it gets, so we know the importance of these games.

"I thought the bowlers were outstanding and we managed to get those early wickets. In the middle period, we made chances and kept getting wickets. The bowlers were spot on with their plans an executions.

"We've just been very clear in our plans. The guys are feeling confident and physically good. We have a few options to turn to. It makes your job easy as a captain when you turn to those options, and they deliver from ball one.

"Since Brandon [McMullen] has come in, he's had some fantastic performances. It's still early in his career. He's a key player for us. He opened the bowling, bowled nine straight. He was happy to keep going. He's certainly a very special talent.

"Things have gone pretty well over the last year or so. We had some good results. Missing Calum [MacLeod] and Kyle [Coetzer] has been a change, but the young players have really stepped up and shown good signs. There's other experienced players in this squad, which makes things easier for me.

"The support has been fan from back home and long may it continue."

  3. Strong words from WI captain Shai Hopepublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

Scotland beat the West Indies by seven wickets

The West Indies' captain Shai Hope talks to Sky Sports about his side's poor performance: "There's not one thing to put my finger on. We've certainly let ourselves down here in the entire tournament. We need to look at the way we start our innings.

[On a specific problem] "The mindset. Fielding is well and truly an attitude, in my opinion. We need to make more effort, especially with our attitude.

"Catches will drop, misfields will happen, it's all part of the game. The effort needs to remain, regardless. I don't think we gave 100% effort every time.

"It starts with foundation. The preparation needs to be better, from back home. We can't come here and expect to be an elite team without the backing and preparation.

"We can't expect to wake up one morning and be a great team. There's a lot we need to focus on, we have to control what we can control.

"Scotland played really well, credit to them. I could see discipline, especially in the bowling attack. That's something we can take from them.

  4. McMullen shines againpublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

Scotland beat the West Indies by seven wickets

Player of the Match Brandon McMullen talks Sky Sports through his opening spell: "It was going my way, so we had to make use of it. I enjoyed all three [wickets], they were all pretty good.

[On his batting] "I just wanted to play my game and rebuild my innings, and give us the best chance to win the match.

"Matthew [Cross] was phenomenal today and took a lot of pressure of both of us. It was awesome to see him back in form.

[On his massive six] "I was chuffed with that one! It's part of my game, playing nice, straight shots so it was good that it came off today. I have no words, really."

  5. The West Indies fail to qualify for World Cuppublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

Scotland beat the West Indies by seven wickets

For the first time in men's World Cup history, the West Indies will not be there.

They may have been the winners in 1975 and 1979, but West Indian cricket is going through a really, really tough time. Disjointed, in disarray, they have majorly disappointed in Zimbabwe.

There's still plenty of talent coming out of the Caribbean, but they aren't able to get anything out of it at the moment. There's plenty of reasons behind it - political infighting, being one - and no doubt there will be a significant post-mortem following these results.

They were absolutely out-classed by Scotland today.

  6. SCOTLAND BEAT THE WEST INDIES BY SEVEN WICKETS!published at 14:44 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

    Scotland 185-3 v 181 West Indies

And it's Matthew Cross who has the honours of scoring the winning runs! A superb innings from the opener, who more than deserves the acclaim.

He does it in style - swiping Romario Shepherd away with a one-bounce boundary. Inches away from a maximum!

For the first time in ODI history, Scotland have beaten the West Indies. One of the most significant wins in the country's history, and it's redemption for 2018 - when Scotland lost by five runs.

Their World Cup hopes are still alive!

  7. Scores level!published at 43 overs

    Scotland 181-3 (target 182) v West Indies

Another couple, as Richie Berrington slices his big driven effort. He's keen to get it done within this over.

Matthew Cross flicks down the leg side all the way to the rope... the score is now level.

    One run needed.

  8. Within touching distance...published at 42 overs

    Scotland 168-2 (target 182) v West Indies

The runs are coming. Slowly, right enough, but they are coming.

Berrington edges behind and with no slip it runs towards the boundary. Rovman Powell - the T20 captain - is down there, but he makes a half-hearted effort to stop the ball, and it goes to the rope.

I'm being kind there, folks. Dear me.

  9. wicket

WICKET Munsey c Charles b Hosein 18published at 39.3 overs

    Scotland 162-3 (target 182) v West Indies

It won't be Munsey who scores the winnings runs.

He fell into a trap perfectly set by the West Indies, and he just couldn't help himself but try and reverse sweep the ball to the boundary.

There was Johnson Charles at deep point - who made no mistake this time.

Now here comes Richie Berrington. He's supposed to be alright, this lad...

  11. Postpublished at 37 overs

    Scotland 158-2 (target 182) v West Indies

Oh dear. Kyle Mayers with an ugly one. Surely that's over waist-height?! No says the umpire. Four off that over. 24 needed.

We've just seen a Scotland football top in the crowd! I wonder what name is on the back? McGinn? Robertson? O'Donnell?

  12. Postpublished at 35 overs

    Scotland 150-2 (target 182) v West Indies

That'll add salt to the wound. A wide and a four to boot, as Munsey sweeps off his ankles. Shai Hope took the bails off with his gloves, to add to the excitement.

Kyle Mayers then offers a full toss to Cross, but he doesn't time it well enough. He gets two but he should have had more.

  13. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 34 overs

    Scotland 140-2 (target 182) v West Indies

A bit of miscommunication there, but the West Indies can't take advantage. George Munsey took the single, Matthew Cross wanted two.

Munsey did say "no run" but Cross didn't hear. Either way, the fielder threw to the bowler instead of the keeper and Cross was safe.

    Phew. Time for drinks.

  14. Less than 50 needed for a Scotland winpublished at 33 overs

    Scotland 137-2 (target 182) v West Indies

Scotland need just 50 to win... and George Munsey is keen to get them there. Alzarri Joseph offers one wide and Munsey slaps it past extra cover for four.

Over 100 balls remain for them to get the target. That should be plenty.

With the final ball, Joseph bounces and Cross tries to pull away, but only drags the ball onto his shoulder at pace. A nasty delivery, and Cross throws his bat to the turf in a mix of pain and frustration. He should be okay to continue.

  15. Postpublished at 32 overs

    Scotland 130-2 (target 182) v West Indies

George Munsey is beaten all ends up - and he recognises it with a little nod of the head. That wasn't far away at all, just missing off stump. A beaut of a delivery from Romario Shepherd.

Scotland's run rate is very low, but they really won't be too bothered. What the West Indies need is wickets but they cannot find them.

It's the Scots who are in control.

  16. Munsey off the markpublished at 30 overs

    Scotland 127-2 (target 182) v West Indies

George Munsey is in. The left-hander has missed the last three games through illness. A stomach bug ripped through camp, affecting Brandon McMullen as well, but it really took Munsey down.

Thankfully he's back, and he's off the mark with his first shot - cutting to point.

  17. wicket

WICKET McMullen c Joseph b Shepherd 69published at 29.2 overs

    Scotland 125-2 (target 182) v West Indies

It had to come to an end eventually. McMullen tries to go big again, but it's a bit short and he finds Alzarri Joseph at long-on.

Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.

  18. 50 runs

    50published at 29 overs

    Scotland 124-1 (target 182) v West Indies

And it's a half century for Matthew Cross! His tenth in ODIs for Scotland - and it means a lot to the opener. He had only scored 51 in the tournament until today - he's almost doubled his tally today alone.

He reaches the milestone with a quick single, and dare I say looks a little emotional in doing so. Great knock, sir.

  19. Shhhhhhhot!published at 28 overs

    Scotland 121-1 (target 182) v West Indies

Brandon McMullen! Stop that! Gorgeous, classy, sweet as a nut.

He walks down to a shorter ball from Jason Holder and still manages to drive for four, getting on top of the bounce while on his back foot.

A couple more from the over, and Scotland are putting their foot on the gas a little.

  20. Cross tees off!published at 27 overs

    Scotland 113-1 (target 182) v West Indies

Brandon McMullen is playing the starring role, but the Supporting Actor gong is going to Matthew Cross.

He hits three consecutive boundaries - dispatching Kevin Sinclair all over the place. One is a reverse sweep, one is flicked off the shins, one is thumped through extra cover.

He's wanting some of the limelight!
