  1. Brave 40-0published at 26 balls

    Big spin for Erin Burns!

The ball turns sharply away from the left-handed Smriti Mandhana, beats the bat and the wicketkeeper, too, before running away for four byes.

Good signs for the Phoenix with so many spinners in their XI today.

That was Smriti Mandhana's second boundary. Here is her first, a dismissive pull shot off Tess Flintoff...

  3. Brave 36-0published at 25 balls

While Danni Wyatt has started well, Smriti Mandhana has not managed to find the gaps so far.

That is until the last ball of the powerplay, which she nails through the leg side for four!

  4. Brave 28-0published at 20 balls

That boundary aside, it's a solid five from Erin Burns. The Aussie's first set costs just six runs.

Danni Wyatt is looking in good touch for the Brave, though.

  5. Brave 27-0published at 18 balls

Erin Burns, still wearing her cap, is on to bowl to Smriti Mandhana.

The left-hander has struggled against off-spin at times but calmly pushes a single second ball to get off strike.

No such worries for Danni Wyatt as she pulls a short ball to fine leg for four!

  6. Brave 22-0published at 15 balls

    Wyatt 11, Mandhana 7

A couple of wides extend that Sophie Devine set but she finishes with a dot ball as Smriti Mandhana drives straight to mid-on.

Danni Wyatt has always been strong through the off-side but she's worked so hard on her leg-side game recently. It's made her a lot harder to bowl at.

  8. Brave 20-0published at 13 balls

    Wyatt 10, Mandhana 7

Sophie Devine strays onto the pads of Danni Wyatt, who flicks the ball away behind square.

The fielder gives chase but the ball wins the race to the boundary.

Smriti Mandhana just picks up length so quickly. She is one of the hardest batters to bowl at, and to set a field for as a captain.

It is really tough on the quick bowlers to bowl 10 balls in a row.

Unless it's moving around a lot, I wouldn't often go for it.

  10. Brave 13-0published at 10 balls

Crunched over mid-wicket by Smriti Mandhana!

Top shot to end that 10-ball set from Tess Flintoff.

You can't bowl there to Danni Wyatt.

  12. Brave 8-0published at 7 balls

Short and wide outside off stump from Tess Flintoff and Danni Wyatt carves it away over backward point for four!

  13. Brave 4-0published at 5 balls

The Brave get a helping hand from Tess Flintoff as she sends a wide a long way down leg, allowing them to run through for another.

Just four from the set, though, decent start for Flintoff and the Phoenix.

  14. Brave 1-0published at 3 balls

Southern Brave are up and running third ball as Smriti Mandhana works the ball off her pads for a single.

Coming up against a side with nothing to lose can be quite dangerous because they can just enjoy it, and play with more freedom.

It may not be plain sailing for Southern Brave even though they do have such a formidable team.

The players are out at the Ageas Bowl.

Birmingham Phoenix can't qualify but they'll still be desperate to claim their first win of the campaign.

Tess Flintoff will open the bowling for them.

  17. Mandhana’s issues v off-spinpublished at 14:59 British Summer Time 16 August 2023

In T20s this year, Smriti Mandhana averages 13 & strikes at 100 facing off-spinners - the lowest of all bowler-types. Erin Burns is the ideal match up to her.

Phoenix have very limited options to break this prolific opening combination - a big part of the Brave’s domination.

When you've got a young talented fast bowler like Issy Wong, you want to see them play but she's been struggling for a bit of form so perhaps they want to give Maqsood a go on a pitch that's offering a bit of turn.

Three leg-spinners to the left-handed Smriti Mandhana is very brave, though. She is a world-class player and is so hard to bowl at.

In T20s since the start of 2021, Danni Wyatt averages 14 and strikes at 88 facing high pace (In excess of 70 kph) deliveries.

Issy Wong would have been the ideal matchup to Wyatt but she is not involved for the Phoenix today.

Three leg-spinners is a bit too many for me! It's an interesting tactic from the Phoenix.

Danni Wyatt is very strong against spin so I'll be intrigued about how much of it she faces.
