Here's why Liam Livingstone is being called gold dust by Jos Buttler...

  3. 'Players like Livingstone are like gold dust'published at 21:15 British Summer Time 30 August 2023

England captain Jos Buttler: "Delighted. I think that was a really, really good performance.

"Our powerplay, having Finn Allen hitting those three sixes in the first over, to come back in the way we did was brilliant.

"The spinners really put a stranglehold on."

On Brydon Carse: "Fantastic start for him on his home ground. He bowled with great skill and good pace. We've given guys opportunities and he stood up and took his.

"Luke Wood as well come back brilliantly well after that first over to take the wickets he did."

On Dawid Malan: "He's a class player and has been for a long period of time.

"He's been very consistent for us at number three in the T20s and shown great form in 50-over cricket for us when he's had the chance.

"We know what a top player he is."

On the spinners: "Liam Livingstone bowled brilliantly. It was nice to see a guy like him who can contribute with bat, ball and in the field. They're like gold dust in this format.

"I thought Moeen [Ali] bowled brilliantly as well and we know how good Adil Rashid is. It's good to have those guys to call upon."

Harry Brook also looked very, very good though.

Dawid Malan would have come into this game under some pressure after being dropped by Trent Rockets in The Hundred.

Some out there will think Harry Brook should be in England's 50-over team over Malan, so a half-century was a timely reminder of the latter's ability.

We also got a glimpse of Will Jacks ability at the top of the order as the Surrey man hit Lockie Ferguson for three successive boundaries.

With Alex Hales retiring from T20 cricket Jacks has an opportunity to nail down that opening slot in England's T20 side.

  7. 'Early wickets stalled our momentum'published at 21:09 British Summer Time 30 August 2023

New Zealand captain Tim Southee: "It was no doubt not our best effort but we’ve got a couple of days to turn it round. The way they took early wickets stalls any momentum but our assessment of the wicket was probably a bit off and with the ball we just had to try and take as wickets as we could.

"We want to do it our way and assess conditions and we probably didn’t do that as well as usually do today. We want to stay true to our style and that has worked over a period of time for us.

"Glenn Phillips seems to find a way in tricky situations and get us through to a competitive score."

Brydon Carse was another of the players that impressed for England as he made his debut and became the 100th male to play T20 cricket for England.

The Durham quick removed Finn Allen in the powerplay before getting Adam Milne and Ish Sodhi in the final over of the innings.

  9. 'A special feeling'published at 21:06 British Summer Time 30 August 2023

Player of the match, England debutant Brydon Carse: "Obviously a great start to my T20 career, awesome to play in front of my home crowd here at Durham and put a good performance in for the team.

"I just try to keep to my strengths, try to hit the top of the stumps and it paid off, picking up that crucial wicket at that time.

"Sometimes it can be a bit two-paced, especially through the middle, but I think in the powerplay there were some balls that skidded through and some that held.

"I've had a lot of friends come and support me here tonight, I've been here almost 10 years so to put in that performance tonight was a special feeling."

Luke Wood went for those three sixes in the first over but came back well to get Devon Conway, Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips.

Wood finished with 3-37 and also took a catch on a good day out for the Lancashire man.

    Great performance from England.

New Zealand had the first over in their favour and that's about it. England made the adjustments with the ball and set up a target that their batters have absolutely munched!

Some of the batsmenship in the second half of this innings, from Harry Brook in particular, has been sublime.

Finn Allen has grabbed Harry Brook's bat off him as the players walk off the field.

He wants to have a look at what is a seriously good bat. Brook happily lets him but ensures he gets it back.

Brook finishes 43 not out off 27 balls, while Liam Livingstone was unbeaten on 10 off four balls.

Oh, it's massive! What a statement! It drops into a crowd of gleeful spectators.

They've been richly entertained by an England side that look every bit the dominant side in white-ball cricket.

My word. What a shot from Harry Brook.

It's yorker length from Adam Milne and Brook just nonchalantly chips it down the ground.

    Four to win.

It's quality batting. Milne was fractionally short but the ball stayed slow and Brook is in such good form that he's still able to bang it away for four.
