England pace bowler on BBC Two

I played with Gus at the start of the year and he's was bowling mid-80mph. He must've worked on something because this summer he's bowling 90mph and above consistently.

  2. NZ 8-1published at 2 overs

Tim Seifert is in at three for New Zealand and he gets off the mark with a push into the covers for two.

    Conway c Livingstone v Atkinson 4 (NZ 6-1)

A wicket in his first over!

Conway tries to flick Atkinson off his legs and only succeeds in finding Liam Livingstone at deep square.

Atkinson looks absolutely unbothered by it - a cool head on his shoulders.

  6. NZ 6-0published at 1.2 overs

Here comes the debutant Gus Atkinson, replacing Luke Wood in the line-up today.

He's bowling in the 90s with his second ball, Conway inside edges for two.

New Zealand batter Finn Allen speaking earlier on BBC Two: "It's always good fun to play in the UK. I put in a lot of work before The Hundred, it's good to see performances come through.

"Devon Conway and I have spent a bit of time batting together now, in domestic cricket at home too. We know each other's games pretty well and I guess he's a pretty calming influence on me, we keep each other going and have formed a good bond and friendship off the field as well.

"I want to put the opposition on the back foot, something I was working on with Stephen Fleming during The Hundred was improving my method. But I definitely want to be aggressive.

"A lot of exciting cricket coming up. We're coming up against a quality England side, they've got some excellent spinners in the middle overs, I think we've can get on top of those guys it's good practice for India and the World Cup."

  8. NZ 3-0published at 1 over

Thanks Ffion, this is going to be quite a formidable target for this pair.

It's Sam Curran opening the bowling for England and Allen gets his first run off the third ball of the over, pushing into the leg-side.

Just two more runs follow and that's a very solid start for the home side.

It hasn't been a great night to be a bowler so far.

Tim Southee conceded 48 from his four overs, Ferguson 43 and Ish Sodhi 44 (although he did take two wickets).

Will England's fare a little better? We'll see Gus Atkinson in action shortly...

    England bowler on BBC Two

Jonny can take a lesson from this innings. He only averages 22 opening the batting in T20, he took his time, got the pace of the pitch, he can catch up. No ground is big enough when he's playing like this, he's absolutely brutal, it's either really sweet timing or brute power that gets it to the boundary.

Brutal hitting, I feel for the bowlers. At the powerplay stage, England were only 40 for 1, and I thought maybe it was going to be a stop start game, did the surface have enough in it, well it had plenty. Harry Brook came in and freed up Jonny Bairstow, when he came in and played a few shots, he showed what was possible.

  13. Postpublished at 19:38 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

A partnership of 131 between Harry Brook and Jonny Bairstow propelled England to a formidable total.

    The bowlers had no answers.

The shape of the innings, from nine to 15 overs was so destructive. New Zealand had no answer to the power of Brook and Bairstow.

  15. Eng 198-4published at 20 overs

Buttler and Bairstow scamper a bye from the final ball and that concludes a remarkable innings from England.

Bairstow finishes unbeaten with 86 from 60 balls, having been starved of the strike a bit towards the end, but it was a great knock.

After all the carnage, New Zealand need 199 to win.

Ferguson came a little bit straighter and give Buttler the length. It's just such a strong swing. Good height, good power.

Very, very good from Adam Milne.

He concedes just four from the penultimate over by nailing his yorkers and ends up with 0-23 - which is quite something in a total of this magnitude.

It'll be Lockie Ferguson with the last.
