Bairstow gets back safely.
On we go.
Eng 40-1
Do New Zealand have a second?
We're taking a look at a stumping on Bairstow. It's not a particularly confident appeal from the keeper, however.
A very good over from Southee to complete the powerplay, beating the edge of new batter Dawid Malan on a couple of occasions.
A measured start from England, and neither side has really dominated the first six overs yet.
Jonny Bairstow has played some lovely shots but some uncertain ones too, in his 21 from 22 balls.
Jacks c Chapman b Southee 19 (Eng 40-1)
Six and out!
It's smart bowling from the ever-reliable Tim Southee. He takes the pace off after Will Jacks tucked in to Lockie Ferguson the previous over.
Jacks can't resist another big shot and with little timing, picks out Mark Chapman at mid-on.

It was all about the length. Jacks has finally got one out of the middle, he's been trying to force it previously, but this one came right into the arc.
And Jacks continues! He clubs the last ball of the over for six over mid-wicket.
The profitable over that England needed to get them going.
Lockie Ferguson is on for the first time. He's always fun to watch with his pace, but I'll let you make your own mind up about his black spikes and black headband combo.
His first four balls concede two boundaries - neither particularly convincing.
Will Jacks hacks one over mid-on, before taking an almighty swing at the next and luckily getting an edge that just misses his stumps and races away for four.

Santner delays his release, he's watching, watching, watching - waiting for as much information as possible.

You could see Bairstow was eyeing it up. He got the bat raised early. It got the treatment, he knew exactly where the gap was and hammered it.
Spin for the first time in the form of Mitchell Santner.
And he drops a rank short ball to Bairstow - not advised. It's helped on its way for four.
But Santner responds well, not allowing any more room for the batters to free their arms.

With players rested, for the incumbent it creates a pressure to perform. We came up against one of the great sides in Australia in the late 90s, early 00s, and some of their performances were spurred on by who was being left out, they knew they had to be at their very best. So it's not just about getting in the side.
Milne fights back with a couple of dots, beating Bairstow for pace.
Bairstow has 14 from 16 balls whereas Will Jacks has only faced two balls so far.
Time to hit the accelerator to make the most of the powerplay?

It's quite unusual for England to choose to bat when winning the toss in T20 cricket. Since 2017, this is the 42nd time they've won the toss, only the fourth time they've chosen to bat. They didn't do it at all between 2017 and 2021.
England do have a good record in the games where they've batted first, this decade it's won 14, lost seven, only three countries in T20 cricket have a better win/loss ratio batting first - Uganda, Tanzania and Malaysia - and if you guessed those three, well done!
Oooh, nailed.
Adam Milne drops too short and Bairstow clatters it away for four.
Don't bowl there.
Tim Southee almost has his man, as Bairstow plays a loose pull shot with one hand coming off the bat. It's in the air for a while but eventually lands safely in front of fine leg.
A cautious-ish start by England's standards, as Tim Southee backs up Adam Milne's consistency.
Bang, straight down the ground with a swagger for Jonny Bairstow's first boundary.

Will Jacks is so good on that off-side, it would be worth the third man coming round to point, because Jacks is so dominant in that area.
Shot!
Will Jacks nails his first ball through the covers for four, but is beaten on the inside edge from his second as Milne responds well.
An eventful first over!
Jonny Bairstow scrambles a quick single after facing three dot balls to get off the mark.
He puts in a full-length dive to get there - a result of the pressure from Milne first up.

That's a really good decision from Alex Wharf, that late swing took it past leg stump.
