The day started well for England with man of the moment Harry Brook flicking the first ball of the match for four.

He and Dawid Malan shared an 80-run opening stand before both fell in the space of five balls.

  6. 'At halfway I thought we had a good score'published at 20:13 British Summer Time 8 September 2023

England captain Jos Buttler: "Disappointing. At halfway I thought we actually had a pretty good score.

"Most of us were finding it tough to time the ball, the deeper it got into the innings, the harder it got so in that sense, it felt like it might be a good toss to lose.

"Credit to them, it was a fantastic partnership. We couldn't find a way to break that and it opened the game up.

"We tried most things. For a little period we built pressure nicely and just pushed the rate up to just under sevens, then Daryl Mitchell played a couple of big shots and took it away from us again.

"Then we chased the game a bit, bringing the field in to try and get a wicket. But a brilliant partnership.

"But I thought we got up to a good score. The impetus of that Liam Livingstone gave to the innings took us up to what I thought was just over par."

On selection for rest of the series: "The way the schedule is, we've got to look after a few guys. It's a quick turnaround so we'll give opportunties and look after guys as well.

"But we also want to play good cricket. We want to win games and we know we're up against a good team. We always have good series against New Zealand so we'll try to come back strongly."

Willey didn't swing the ball today, I saw a little bit from Topley. I'm not sure about all of the spin. Adil Rashid started really well, it deceived Young but it didn't really turn match.

I think Rashid lost that really spinning delivery after that, you can open yourself up and put the stumps into play. He didn't really seem like he is that player anymore.

  8. 'Conway and Mitchell partnership was outstanding'published at 20:08 British Summer Time 8 September 2023

New Zealand captain Tom Latham to Sky Sports: "I think it was slower than we initially thought, Ravindra bowled outstanding to take three wickets and use the boundary. I thought England were about par, but the partnership of 180 was outstanding. Young and Devs set up the partnership to allow us to play the way we did."

Conway and Mitchell partnership: "Conway and Mitchell established the start of the partnership way. The pleasing was was how he finished, Daryl was nice and expansive and ended strongly.

Rotating in this four-match series?: "I think at times, we don't want to look too far ahead, we will try and keep the guys fresh and not use them too much."

Player of the match, New Zealand's Devon Conway: "Pretty happy with the way the innings went. It was nice to get some time in the middle and get the win.

"We thought England's score was just above par, but the bowlers did well to restrict them on that surface. We just knew that if we built those partnerships it would get us over the line.

"The nice thing about ODI cricket is you have more time than you think. It felt a lot slower out there and the communication with each partnership was brilliant."

On Daryl Mitchell: "I always enjoy batting alongside him. We complement each other well. He hit a lot of boundaries so I just had to help get him on strike."

Devon Conway was the lynchpin for New Zealand in the chase.

The opener finished unbeaten on 111 from 121 balls. Not quick by modern standards but it didn't need to be.

It was just what the Black Caps needed and despite him scoring at under a run-a-ball, they got over the line with 26 balls to spare.

It's Adil Rashid's joint-fifth most expensive ODI innings in terms of runs per ball.

Since the start of 2019 he's averaged 36 with the ball. Between 2016 and 2018, he averaged 26.

I think pretty disappointing from an England point of view. I thought they set a decent score. I think Mitchell and Conway put on an exhibition of how to chase down a total. Only Chris Woakes really created opportunities.

Topley struggled, Atkinson charged in but didn't create much. Rashid started brilliantly but in the end, he was tossing it up trying to buy a wicket and Mitchell smashed him for six.

I don't think David Willey can play in this team unless he takes the new ball, Sam Curran is a better option. It does feel like there are more questions the answers.

I would like to see Mark Wood, Brydon Carse, just to see what they can do. It was pretty flat from a seamers point of view.

I'm surprised at the margin of victory. I thought England set a competitive score. New Zealand England down between overs 13 and 25. New Zealand have batted exceedingly well.

It is a statement. New Zealand have played well, especially with the bat on what is a slow-ish pitch. The spinners have not really done it for England. England tried to do things and influence the batters and they almost got Mitchell out off a wild shot.
