Jos Buttler threw his head up in frustration, but that's a beauty from Mitch Santner and he's bowled a couple of them now. Good from Santner, Buttler will be frustrated. Most days of the week, you would take 30 off 25 but England need a lot more now.

  2. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 12.1 overs

    Buttler b Santner 30 (Eng 55-5)

    Buttler plays on!

He sets his legs wide, looking to power Santner unconventionally over the covers, but the ball takes a thick inside edge and clatters into the stumps.

Buttler goes for 30 from 25, in comes Liam Livingstone.

  3. Eng 54-4published at 12 overs

Southee sends down a leg-side wide to bring up England's fifty before Buttler takes two wide of point.

Moeen swivels to try and elaborate pull but it doesn't come and he can only take a single.

  4. Eng 49-4published at 11 overs

Santner continues and the England pair struggle to get him away, the over going for just three runs.

The ground sound system is repeatedly pumping out Stevie Wonder's Happy Birthday between overs - I assume that's in tribute to Dawid Malan's new arrival.

Here are the four early wickets that have left England in trouble. Trent Boult took three scalps, before Matt Henry dismissed Harry Brook.

The floodlights are on at a gloomy Ageas Bowl.

  7. Eng 44-4published at 10 overs

A change of bowling at both ends as Tim Southee is introduced into the attack in place of Matt Henry.

He briefly troubles Moeen Ali before the all-rounder offers another beautifully timed shot through the covers, the ball beating the chasing fielder to the rope.

He follows with another nice drive for two more.

Is anyone ever going to say that England look desperately out of form with the World Cup just round the corner? We have one world-class short-form player at present - Buttler - full stop. I'm an optimist but I'm worried.

  9. Eng 40-4published at 9 overs

A meaty blow from Jos Buttler, smacking Mitchell Santner's opening delivery over extra cover for four.

The New Zealand all-rounder offers a half-hearted shout for lbw against Buttler later in the over - it would have been heading down leg.

A beauty from Moeen Ali, classy as always. It gives England a bit of a momentum.

  11. Eng 34-4published at 8 overs

A lovely bit of batting from Moeen Ali, in for England at number six.

He times Matt Henry through the covers with sumptuous ease, the ball racing away to the boundary.

It's not the sort of form that will earn Harry Brook a spot in the World Cup squad.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 7.2 overs

    Brook c Allen b Henry 2 (Eng 28-4)

    New Zealand strike back!

England put firmly back in their box as Harry Brook departs. He tries to flick the ball casually off his legs, but is through the shot quickly and the ball ripples up to mid-on, Finn Allen taking the catch back pedalling.

Brook goes for just 2 from 11 balls.

  15. Eng 28-3published at 7 overs

Signs of intent from Jos Buttler!

He smacks Boult flat down the ground for his first four, hitting the ball so hard that's he's taken a chip out of the bat. Having been provided with a new piece of willow he dispatches another boundary to much the same area.

A final four follows two balls later, slightly wider in the long-off region.

Buttler moves to 18, and that's the end of the powerplay in this 34-over match.

It's been a fantastic start by New Zealand, but captain Tom Latham will surely keep hunting for wickets.

The opening bowling pair of Trent Boult and Matt Henry are both considered good options for Harry Brook according to CricViz's captaincy grid, alongside spinners Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra.

The best option for Jos Buttler? Boult again or the spin of Santner and Ravindra.

There's no point going into your shell with the bat, as some someone like Boult is dangerous in these conditions.

  18. Eng 13-3published at 6 overs

A quieter over as England tentatively seek to start building a platform. Brook finds a single past the slips, Buttler takes two to deep third.

Reasonable to say this start has quelled the excitement of any home fans who braved the early rain to make it to Southampton. It's very quiet out there, with the fielders calls audible.

This is New Zealand's best ever start bowling at England in an ODI in terms of just eight runs scored at the fall of the third wicket.

This is England's fifth worst start in terms of lowest runs scored in an ODI when losing their third wicket, the worst was against Australia at Adelaide in January 2018, being reduced to 4-3.

Here's the pitchmap from the first three overs.

The three wickets (red dots) were pitched on a length by Trent Boult.

New Zealand haven't strayed too full and given England any drive balls so far.
