We witnessed some brilliant hitting from Chamari Athapaththu, who made light work of the Sri Lankan chase - and very nearly hit one shot into a nearby balcony.

Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu: "I'm really happy about my team's performance, the bowling unit did a really good job. The batters did a really good job too.

"I'm happy about my performance as well.

"We trust our potential and skill and talk about positivity. We learned a lot of things from the last game and we executed all the right plans here.

"The first game was hard because it was the first time we played in those conditions but today the weather was good for us. We bowled in good areas and the wicket was very helpful for our spinners.

"As a captain, as a team, this is huge for us - the first win against England in T20s. This is huge for women's cricket in Sri Lanka."

This was the winning moment. Talk about finishing it in style.

England captain Heather Knight: "Sri Lanka were outstanding. They came out and bowled much better than they did the other night, so credit to them. And then Chamari came out and does what she can do, which is be aggressive and take the game on.

"We had an inexperienced side today and at times it showed. And it showed when you are off in international cricket you can get humbled. So lots to learn and get better from, but credit to Sri Lanka. We were pretty off it today.

"The pitch was a little bit two-paced but it was still a good deck and we consistently lost wickets. Sometimes that happens. I want the girls to keep being aggressive. A few of the dismissals were soft, mine included, so we need to be better with our execution."

On Issy Wong: "She has been struggling a little bit for rhythm but she had a few good sessions. Finding where she is at is important and in international cricket that is in the middle, not just bowling in the nets.

"She still has a bit of work to do to get better but she has something we want to invest in in the future.

"The thing that impresses me about Wongy is that she keeps coming back, wanting to work on her game and she will get there eventually."

Chamari Athapaththu has a beaming smile on her face as she joins the rest of the Sri Lanka team on the boundary edge to shake hands with the England players.

Her innings broke the back of the Sri Lanka chase, but their bowlers also deserve huge credit for limiting England to such a low score.

An historic day for Sri Lankan cricket. - and it could get even better. We now have a series decider to look forward to at Derby on Wednesday.

Brilliant from Sri Lanka, they deserve all the plaudits.

What a way to win it!

Harshitha Madavi has hammered Kate Cross over mid-wicket for six to seal a thumping eight-wicket victory for Sri Lanka with 40 balls to spare - their first win over England in a T20 international.

  11. SL 104-2published at 13 overs

That is a brilliant drive from Vishmi Gunaratne, arrowing the ball down the ground and to the rope. That's three fours in the over for Gunaratne,

Issy Wong's two overs went for 24.

Scores are level. This is an absolutely stonking victory for Sri Lanka.

This isn't good for Wong's confidence. She's a confident person but she's just not got her rhythm at the moment.

  13. SL 100-2published at 12.2 overs

Issy Wong returns to the attack and is immediately carted away for back-to-back fours.

It has just not been her day.

Just five runs needed for Sri Lanka now.

  14. SL 92-2published at 12 overs

Harshitha Madavi helps herself to another four with a late cut shot that disappears away fine and to the rope.

Sri Lanka can afford to be patient and pick off the bad balls as they nudge their way to what would be their first ever win over England in a women's T20 international.

  15. SL 86-2published at 11 overs

Good technique from Vishmi Gunaratne as she plays a paddle shot off Sarah Glenn and the ball flies away fine for four.

19 more runs needed for Sri Lanka.

Vishmi Gunaratne comes out to join Harshitha Madavi in the middle.

    Athapaththu c Cross b Capsey 55 (SL 79-2)

    Chamari Athapaththu finally goes!

Alice Capsey offers a bit of width and lures Athapaththu into a powerful drive that she does not quite time and Kate Cross pouches it at long-on.

A brilliant and almost certainly match-winning innings comes to an end.

  19. ouch!

    SL 75-1published at 8.1 overs

Ouch. A throw in from long-on by Kate Cross leaps up off the edge of the square and smacks right into Sarah Glenn's shoulder. That looked painful.

Glenn has a smile on her face and is fine to continue though.
