Conceivably a team can lose three matches and still make it to the semis, so there's plenty of time for England to improve. But the hammering their net run-rate has taken will not leave much margin for error beyond that.

England weren't on it with the bat. They didn't throw many punches, they didn't look to counter-attack the bowling at any stage.

And with the ball, you want your opening bowler to set the tone and Sam Curran did that but Chris Woakes couldn't get any consistency.

It went from bad to worse for England. There were boundaries every single over and New Zealand were never under pressure.

That partnership of 273 between Conway and Ravindra is the fourth highest in the history of the Men's World Cup. Highest for any wicket for New Zealand, highest by any team against England.

Ben Stokes is hobbling across the outfield. That might be even more concerning than the result from an England point of view.

New Zealand have absolutely hammered England here in the opening match of the World Cup.

280 never looked like enough. England knew that they had to bowl them out to have any chance of winning and they only managed to take one wicket.

If New Zealand were looking for some kind of revenge after 2019, that is a statement win. With interest on it.

82 balls remaining. Complete domination. New Zealand wonderful. England woeful. Incredible way to start the World Cup. The defending champions humbled.

Well, in anybody's language, this is an absolute thrashing.

We got battered by NZ in the first ODI of the recent series and that turned out OK (this is my one tiniest crumb of comfort).

This is accelerating very, very quickly now. A glorious shot to bring up Devon Conway's 150.

There was nothing the fielder could do there. He is timing the ball to perfection.

As a reminder, New Zealand are without Kane Williamson, Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson. They are humiliating England here. Devon Conway has batted like Brian Lara. Incredible knock.

To be honest, from England's point of view, you just want to get off the field as quickly as possible.

They'll just want to start again, reset and tell themselves that their bad performance is out of the way now.

  14. NZ 265-1published at 35 overs

I'll be really interested to hear what England have to say about this. Jos Buttler talked about not "defending" the World Cup, but "attacking". They have been quite passive today. Conway followed up that six with 4, 2, 2, 2, 4. Twenty off it. New Zealand only need 18.

He's not timed that anywhere near cleanly. But he's in such good form it still flies for six.

First ball after drinks! Conway belts SCurran over long-on. New Zealand are trying to take a few with them, here.

New Zealand have outplayed England. They have been so disciplined with the bat but going back to the bowling innings, they dragged control back brilliantly in the middle overs and Matt Henry was excellent.

England's batters, in contrast to these two, got their starts and didn't capitalise. It does look like the conditions have favoured New Zealand in the second innings, the ball has come on to the bat very nicely.

A terrific shot. Moeen tossed it up, but Ravindra was equal to the challenge.

    More fantastic timing.

    Target 283

You know what, there's something rather comforting about England being pumped in a World Cup match. Takes me back to my childhood. None of this new world-beating nonsense. Ravindra heaves a slog-sweep off Moeen for a monster six.

That was a moon ball from Sam Curran. It was so slow.

Rachin Ravindra somehow gets it for four off the toe of the bat.
