If I'm Starc in this situation, I want to face all six deliveries. I'll turn down any singles, try and hit a few bombs. This is my over to get my team past 200 - anything else in the final over is a bonus. This is it, against the injured bowler.

  2. Aus 188-8published at 48 overs

That's a great stop from KL Rahul as he pouches a wide from Mohammed Siraj one-handed. He saved four runs for his side there.

Australia are crawling towards the finish line.

  3. Aus 183-8published at 47 overs

Good response from Jasprit Bumrah who goes for a yorker and very nearly takes out Mitchell Starc's off stump.

Meanwhile, the stadium DJ is really cranking things up between overs and whipping the crowd into a frenzy. The place is absolutely bouncing.

If Mitchell Starc was able to say "put a ball here for me to hit" it would be there. On the hip, belly button height.

    Where did that come from?!

Mitchell Starc has just clobbered Jasprit Bumrah over square leg and into the stands!

It's strange, we're in the 46th over and it feels like the game is going nowhere. Australia are just crawling to the finish line.

  7. Aus 175-8published at 46 overs

Just three singles off Ravichandran Ashwin's final over as he ends with mighty fine figures of 1-34.

The score predictor is exactly 200, which may be a tad optimistic.

This is how Pat Cummins lost his wicket thanks to a brilliant catch from Shreyas Iyer.

  9. Aus 172-8published at 45 overs

Three singles and a wild wide that slipped out of the hand from Jasprit Bumrah's latest over.

Australia will take everything they can get at the moment.

It's a bit stiff to call that a chance. It popped up and it was going to go over Rohit Sharma's head - he jumped to try and get a hand to it to stop it going for four.

  11. Aus 168-8published at 44 overs

I'm not going to call this a drop - but it is a chance.

A feathered edge from Adam Zampa hits wicketkeeper KL Rahul on the pad and loops up to Rohit Sharma at first slip, but the skipper can only deflect the ball off his right hand and it lands safely.

That would have put the gloss on an excellent spell of bowling from Ravindra Jadeja, who finishes with 3-28 from his 10 overs.

The pitch is handed over to the ICC pre-tournament for preparation. I think we've seen in the warm-up games, they're capable of creating unbelievable cricket wickets. This one here isn't an unbelievable cricket wicket - it's a raging turner. And if you look at the rest of the square it's perfectly green. So it's not a seasonal thing, it's an intentional thing.

I wonder if they need to do that, given the state of the pitch in Chennai you're putting more emphasis on the toss and there's a chance it might not go your way.

  13. Aus 168-8published at 43 overs

Adam Zampa is the next batter, complete with facial wounds after colliding into a swimming pool wall.

Australia at risk of not batting out their overs here.

Excellent catch in the deep. He was in control, the important thing about catching in the deep is keeping your head still even if you are moving.

Pat Cummins was trying to get some sort of score, he's probably been the most aggressive batsman today, but it doesn't work for him.

    Cummins c Shreyas b Bumrah 15 (Aus 165-8)

Pat Cummins' luck runs out next over!

You can't really blame the Aussie skipper, though. He had to get on with it and play some risky strokes. Cummins went for a big heave but Shreyas Iyer takes a really smart catch inches off the ground diving forward.

  16. Aus 164-7published at 42 overs

Ravindra Jadeja bowls an absolute beauty that lures Pat Cummins before turning away sharply and beating the outside edge.

Cummins then goes for a rather industrial heave that somehow fails to snare the edge.

To rub salt into Jadeja's wounds Cummins sneaks four runs off the final ball with a clip off the pads that flies away fine.

  17. Aus 160-7published at 41 overs

Jasprit Bumrah comes back into the attack and nearly takes a wicket straight away as Pat Cummins hauls the ball just over mid-wicket and Australia can run two.

Incredible attrition out there in the middle, the way this pitch is starting to play tricks. Kuldeep is starting to really rip some of his stock balls. There was a period in this innings that Australia didn't hit a boundary for 73 balls, which makes you appreciate how difficult it is out there - particularly for the spinners.

  20. Aus 156-7published at 40 overs

Ooh, the thinnest of thin edges from Pat Cummins flies past the wicketkeeper Rahul and disappears away for four.

    That's Australia's best over for a while.
