  1. Aus 27-1published at 5.4 overs

    Target 312

Too full and down the leg side from Marco Jansen and David Warner whips away to the square-leg boundary.

Jansen over-stepped too, but Warner can only work the free-hit for a single.

This isn't a good over from Jansen, with him straying down leg for five wides too. This is undoing some of the early good work.

Jared Maobe: South Africa just looked average in their innings even with that Quinton de Kock century. Game evenly balanced. Over to you Australia.

  3. Aus 16-0published at 5 overs

    Target 312

This is superb stuff from Lungi Ngidi.

He has bowled a really good length and line so far.

Just one run from his third over. His figures are 0-4 so far.

The crowd have gone quiet. They're engaged in what's happening out on the field. This feels like a significant passage of play.

  5. Aus 15-0published at 4 overs

    Target 312

Lovely stroke. David Warner pierces the gap in the covers to pick up the first boundary of the innings.

Warner needed it too, pressure was building. He's on seven off 15 balls.

Mitchell Marsh is struggling at the other end too. He skies a pull for a couple, before being beaten on the outside edge.

  6. Aus 7-0published at 3 overs

    Target 312

    A maiden from Lungi Ngidi.

It has been a watchful start from Australia.

I did wonder if they'd go hard, try and break the back of the chase, but that isn't really their way.

If they manage to win this it would comfortably be Australia's highest run chase to win a World Cup match and their second-highest ever against South Africa in all ODIs.

  8. Aus 7-0published at 2 overs

    Target 312

Appeal for lbw by Marco Jansen and South Africa as the tall left-armer hits Mitchell Marsh on the pads.

Joel Wilson says no and the Proteas opt against the review.

    Bat first? I reckon so.

That was almost the ideal start for South Africa! It wasn't much of a delivery from Lungi Ngidi, and might have been different if it was to a set batter.

  10. Aus 3-0published at 1 over

    Target 312

Is that a half-chance off the first ball? Maybe. Lungi Ngidi is down the leg side but Mitchell Marsh follows it.

We haven't seen a replay yet it looked like it looped off the glove and behind the wicket, but Quinton de Kock couldn't make up the ground to take the catch anyway.

There's a little bit of movement there for Ngidi.

    Stumped

Here's Quinton de Kock's best shots from his second consecutive World Cup century. The South Africa wicketkeeper- batter will retire from ODI cricket after this World Cup.

He recently chatted to BBC’s Stumped and says the Proteas are keen to show what they’re capable of after underperforming in past tournaments…

“We just want to show we can be one of the best teams, I think we have let ourselves down in previous World Cups and also been a bit unlucky.

“Even if we don’t win, at least we can prove to ourselves what we are capable off and our talent is not just lost, showcase our talent at the best level we can.

“It’s a World Cup, the hardest tournament of the calendar, if we win it, it would be absolutely amazing but if we don’t, at least we can finish on a high note as a team especially as we have some special players in our unit.”

A huge Quinton de Kock knock aside, it's been a little bit tepid from South Africa. The race is for second place in this group.

As Glenn Maxwell said, Australia did pull it back well.

After 30 overs South Africa were 171-2. They will probably be disappointed with only adding 140 in the final 20 overs, especially with the wickets in hand.

While Australia did battle back well, they won't be happy with five dropped catches.

  17. 'We're proud of how we pulled it back'published at 13:30 British Summer Time 12 October 2023

Australia's Glenn Maxwell: "It happened in different flows. They were well ahead and on track for 350-plus but in the last 15 overs we pulled it back well and took wickets regularly. We're proud of how we pulled it back.

"I was just trying to get them to hit to the long side as much as I can. It's been good to get more bowling responsibility."

On Quinton de Kock: "I'm sick of watching him sore runs, feels like it happened a lot against us. He's a superstar."

On the pitch: "It played a lot better than I thought it would and hopefully it will skid on under the lights."

It's interesting the way South Africa have paced their innings. They bat sensibly for the first 30 overs then look to explode.

But on this surface, as the ball gone more tired and the surface got a little bit more tired and the bowlers ran there fingers across the ball, they found it increasingly difficult to capitalise on the fantastic start they had.

But still, 311 is a very competitive total. The only thing is that under lights, that ball does just skip on that little bit better and Australia will look to make the most of that.

Not a bad way to finish off the 50th over for Australia after they went for quite a few in the 49th.

    Breaking

Mitchell Starc finishes with two dot balls, making it a double-wicket maiden to end the innings.

Superb stuff from the left-arm quick.

South Africa make 311-7 from their 50 overs. A good-game score I would say.
