The square here was relaid in May and there's some beautiful carry for Australia's bowlers so far. This is the ground where England will play India and looking how it's behaved so far they won't mind it at all.

The first boundary of the day!

It was banged in short by Josh Hazlewood, taken on by Quinton de Kock but he could only get a top-edge with the pull shot.

However, the ball flies up and over wicketkeeper Josh Inglis for four.

  3. SA 7-0published at 3 overs

A couple more plays and misses end the Mitchell Starc over, both from Temba Bavuma.

The ball stayed low for the second of them so that's something to keep an eye on.

Another very tidy over, though. Australia's quicks have started well.

  4. SA 6-0published at 2.1 overs

    Play and a miss!

Full, swinging delivery from Mitchell Starc and Quinton de Kock goes at it with a full-blooded drive.

The ball whistles past the edge as Aussie fielders' hands go to their heads.

Why did Australia go to Chennai and have one spinner? The squad doesn't seem well chosen. It's likely to be favourable to spin here in Lucknow. They only have one spinner again and if Adam Zampa gets smashed again, where do they turn?

  6. SA 6-0published at 2 overs

The ever-consistent Josh Hazlewood starts from the other end and quickly - inevitably - settles in on a good length from the off.

His line strays a touch only once and that allows Temba Bavuma to whip the ball leg side for two.

It's a huge 50,000 seater stadium and very steep! You'd be puffing if you climbed all the way up from the bottom to the top. It's a very impressive stadium.

  8. SA 4-0published at 1 over

Steady start all round, no real scares for the batters but no big shots either.

Four singles from Mitchell Starc's first over. Still plenty of time for this South Africa batting line-up to some off their power.

Australia's strength is the seam bowling of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

South Africa played superbly the other day. It's a different South Africa from a mindset perspective. There's a fearlessness about them. It helped them they came into the tournament under the radar. They probably have the best top six they've ever had at a World Cup.

South Africa have got a pretty formidable batting line-up and they showed just what they're capable of in their first match.

They put up a World Cup record total of 428-5 against Sri Lanka...

  13. ‘We can showcase our talent’published at 09:26 British Summer Time 12 October 2023

    Stumped

South Africa wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock will retire from ODI cricket after this World Cup.

He has spoken to BBC’s Stumped and says the Proteas are keen to show what they’re capable of after underperforming in past tournaments…

“We just want to show we can be one of the best teams, I think we have let ourselves down in previous World Cups and also been a bit unlucky.

“Even if we don’t win, at least we can prove to ourselves what we are capable off and our talent is not just lost, showcase our talent at the best level we can.

“It’s a World Cup, the hardest tournament of the calendar, if we win it, it would be absolutely amazing but if we don’t, at least we can finish on a high note as a team especially as we have some special players in our unit.”

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma: “We weren't too sure about the toss, it's the kind of pitch where whatever we were going to do first, we'd have to do it well.

"One change: Tabraiz Shamsi comes in for Gerald Coetzee. Shamsi has had some decent success against Australia and maybe the wicket will offer some spin and bounce.

"Every game calls for adjustments. We always talk about assessing conditions and trying to adapt our games accordingly. Today is no different."

Australia captain Pat Cummins: “Not too sure what to make of this wicket so we'll have a crack at them first.

"It seems like it's got a bit of moisture in it so it might seam early.

"Two changes, Marcus Stoinis is back from injury in place of Cam Green and Josh Inglis comes in for Alex Carey.

"We were probably a few runs short against India but we bowled pretty well.

"South Africa started the tournament really well, they're a team we know fairly well and it's always a good challenge."

  18. Australia win the toss and bowlpublished at 09:18 British Summer Time 12 October 2023

The coin comes down in favour of Australia and Pat Cummins decides to bowl first.

That seems to be the favoured method of just about every team in this tournament.
